    The Youth Collaborative Mental Health Survey: A Community-Based Participatory Research Approach Using Constructivism With Majority Hispanic Youth

    Youth today face novel mental health challenges compared to youth of previous generations. Youth voice in research is necessary to better understand and alleviate this national youth mental health crisis, but current U.S. nationally representative datasets on youth mental health lack youth voice in their survey designs. The academic team collaborated with 19 high school students to design a comprehensive youth mental health survey called the Youth Collaborative Mental Health Survey (YCMHS). The youth co-investigators represented the diversity of San Antonio, Texas, and were majority Hispanic. The constructivism pedagogy in education, which empowers youth voice in the learning process, was utilized to facilitate the youth-led creation of the YCMHS. During eight 2-hour meetings, the youth co-investigators designed the YCMHS with 20 domains and 195 questions. The YCMHS embraced respondent flexibility and voice and included 42 conditional response questions and 29 free-text response questions. The youth co-investigators led the survey administration at five schools during the 2020–2021 school year. The youth-led research design also strengthened collaboration between community and school partners. Takeaways from the academic team include the importance of being flexible and patient and advocating for the youth collaborators. Takeaways from the youth co-investigators include the importance of being open-minded, asking honest questions related to youth mental health, and being persistent. Future work will strengthen the scientific rigor of the YCMHS and highlight preliminary survey results

    Study of W boson production in PbPb and pp collisions at sqrt(s[NN]) = 2.76 TeV

    A measurement is presented of W-boson production in PbPb collisions carried out at a nucleon-nucleon (NN) centre-of-mass energy sqrt(s[NN]) of 2.76 TeV at the LHC using the CMS detector. In data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.3 inverse microbarns, the number of W to mu mu-neutrino decays is extracted in the region of muon pseudorapidity abs(eta[mu])<2.1 and transverse momentum pt[mu]>25 GeV. Yields of muons found per unit of pseudorapidity correspond to (159 +/- 10 (stat.) +/- 12 (syst.)) 10E-8 W(plus) and (154 +/- 10 (stat.) +/- 12 (syst.)) 10E-8 W(minus) bosons per minimum-bias PbPb collision. The dependence of W production on the centrality of PbPb collisions is consistent with a scaling of the yield by the number of incoherent NN collisions. The yield of W bosons is also studied in a sample of pp interactions at sqrt(s)= 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 231 inverse nanobarns. The individual W(plus) and W(minus) yields in PbPb and pp collisions are found to agree, once the neutron and proton content in Pb nuclei is taken into account. Likewise, the difference observed in the dependence of the positive and negative muon production on pseudorapidity is consistent with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters

    The NHS is currently in the midst of a global health crisis that requires rapid action from its staff and systems. The Royal College of Physicians' chief registrars, in their role as middle leaders that bridge the gap between junior doctors and senior leadership in NHS trusts nationwide, are uniquely positioned to respond to the COVID-19 crisis. Our strategies fall into three overlapping categories: our roles as middle leaders, developing effective communication techniques and promoting staff wellbeing. We discuss lessons of good leadership in a time of crisis, from embracing new ways of working and new technologies, to utilising professional networks to drive change, to providing tools to support the wellbeing of the colleagues we both lead and care for. The lessons of our initial response are being shared across our national network. We also hope that the novel approaches we have developed will inform the practice of future middle leaders.The article is available via Open Access.     2021 GenZ Story Express Projects: Allan Hall

    Every spring, Lynn University holds the Nuremberg Trials class and the GenZ Story Expression Workshop—which culminate in an event that has been treasured by students and the Boca Raton community for more than a decade. Both provide special opportunities for students to explore history with the people who survived it. In 2013, Lynn partnered with NEXT GENERATIONS, a Boca Raton-based organization that strives to preserve the legacy of those who perished and honor those who survived the Holocaust, to expand the class to the GenZ Story Expression Workshop. As part of the workshop, students hear from a survivor firsthand. Later, they create a story expression project through creative mediums such as art, poetry, music, film, theater, technology, blogs or social media. The purpose is for students to express what they have heard in a way to reach out to others who have not heard the survivor’s story and may not be familiar with the horrors of the Holocaust. Due to Covid-19 safety concerns, this year’s workshop was held on Zoom. Final projects are typically displayed at the Project Nuremberg Lawyers Luncheon at Temple Beth El in Boca Raton and at Lynn’s annual Celebration of the Arts.     A scuticociliate causes mass mortality of Diadema antillarum in the Caribbean Sea

    Echinoderm mass mortality events shape marine ecosystems by altering the dynamics among major benthic groups. The sea urchin Diadema antillarum, virtually extirpated in the Caribbean in the early 1980s by an unknown cause, recently experienced another mass mortality beginning in January 2022. We investigated the cause of this mass mortality event through combined molecular biological and veterinary pathologic approaches comparing grossly normal and abnormal animals collected from 23 sites, representing locations that were either affected or unaffected at the time of sampling. Here, we report that a scuticociliate most similar to Philaster apodigitiformis was consistently associated with abnormal urchins at affected sites but was absent from unaffected sites. Experimentally challenging naĂŻve urchins with a Philaster culture isolated from an abnormal, field-collected specimen resulted in gross signs consistent with those of the mortality event. The same ciliate was recovered from treated specimens postmortem, thus fulfilling Koch's postulates for this microorganism. We term this condition D. antillarum scuticociliatosis
