Purpose: This study analyzed the long-term results of cementless total hip arthroplasty using an extensively porous coated stem in patients younger than 45 years old. Materials and Methods: The clinical and radiographic results of 45 hips from 38 patients who underwent cementless total hip replacement arthroplasty with an AML prosthesis were reviewed retrospectively. The average follow-up was 12 years (range, 10-15 years). Results: The average Harris hip score at the time of final follow-up was 87.3 (range 77-94) points. Forty two hips (93.3%) showed excellent and good clinical results. Osteolysis occurred around the stem in 20 hips (44.4%) and around the cup in 26 hips (57.8%). Stress-mediated femoral resorption was observed in 33 hips (73.3%) at 10 years. There was no incidence of resorption progressing after 5 years postoperatively. There was no stem loosening. Five hips were revised for osteolysis, cup loosening and polyethylene wear. Conclusion: The long term results of total hip arthroplasty using an extensively porous coated stem were acceptable, and there was no case involving the progression of proximal bone resorption. Key Words: Cementless total hip arthroplasty, extensively porous coated, polyethylene wear, osteolysi

Linguistic Normalisation in Language Industry. Some Normative and Descriptive Aspects of Dictionary Development

    Get PDF
For commercial software with natural language functions, a high coverage is required. This implies that only extensive lexica and complete morphologies are of interest to the language industry. For many languages, lexical and morphological information has to be collected from traditional lexicographic files and printed dictionaries. However, such material may not provide adequate information - even if trivial defects such as misprintings and editorial inconsequences are left out of account. The present paper is an attempt to point out how basic information on any language drawn from traditional sources has to be controlled for normative correctness and descriptive adequacy, and how normalisation can only be defined relative to a given application. The presentation is based on the author's experience, and the examples are all Norwegian. Still, it is assumed to be of general nature, hightlighting some very fundamental aspects of computational linguistics which are often neglected in practice, which "everybody" is aware of all the same, but very few - if anyone - has bothered to discuss in writing

Early-Career Special Education Teachers’ Knowledge of High-Leverage Practices

AbstractThe most effective way to increase students’ academic performance is to improve the instructional practices of their teachers. Effective, research-based instruction responsive to individual students’ unique needs is imperative for quality outcomes, particularly for students with disabilities. The high-leverage practices (HLPs; Collaboration, Assessment, SEL/Behavior, and Instruction) developed by the Council for Exceptional Children are a set of practices fundamental to student success that early-career teachers should learn, implement, and teach. This exploratory descriptive study was an of examination early-career teachers’ knowledge and use of the 22 HLPs. The study results indicated that similar percentages of early-career alternative-route-to-licensure and traditionally prepared teachers know and use the 22 HLPs, a finding also true for elementary and secondary teachers. Where teachers learned the HLPs showed more variation across subgroups. Focus group interviews showed that the label of HLP was unfamiliar to many of the teachers, who were more aware of evidence-based practices. Many of the early-career teachers’ comments related to best practices indicated more time spent in survival or management mode than engaging in strong instructional practices. The findings indicated recommendations for practice and future research. Improving teacher preparation, professional development, and classroom implementation of HLPs could be a significant tool for improving student outcomes and closing the research-to-practice gap. By learning and teaching the four categories of the 22 HLPs, teacher educators could create preparation programs that clearly address what preservice teachers will practice in their field experiences and professions. Future researchers could build upon this study’s self-reported data with observations, using HLP checklists or matrices to measure how frequently early-career teacher implement HLPs. Expanding the population to include seasoned special education teachers and educators from multiple school districts would provide greater insight into teachers’ knowledge and use of HLPs and present more generalizable results

Sense of Belonging and Language Acquisition: a Pilot RCT Examining Effects of Group Musicking in Adult Migrants Learning Norwegian

    Get PDF
This master’s thesis uses a parallel Pilot-RCT design to explore a possible connection between group musicking, sense of belonging and second language acquisition in adults learning Norwegian in a Norwegian University. Based on a rationale of earlier research and several theories from developmental psychology, music therapy, pedagogy, linguistics and more, the concepts of musicking, sense of belonging and second language acquisition are directly and indirectly linked. Participants (n=24), who had to be older than 18 and in the Norwegian course of the University of Bergen, were randomly assigned by stratified randomisation to either a group (n=13) receiving group musicking in addition to standard language classes, or the control group (n=11) which received nothing outside of their standard language classes. No blinding was done. The primary outcome of the study, Sense of Belonging, was measured at baseline and after 9 weeks of weekly group musicking sessions. An ANCOVA showed a mean difference between groups of -2.84 (95% Confidence Interval: -14.40 — 8.71), with a p-value of 0.604, favouring the control group. The results are not significant, but further research needs to be conducted. There is a high risk of a type two error, considering positive narrative feedback. A large proportion of participants dropped out. This pilot study provides a good basis for a full-size RCT.Masteroppgave i musikkterapiMUTP350MAHF-INMU

‘Because I know God answers prayers’: The Role of Religion in African - Scandinavian Labour Migration

Drawing on interviews conducted with highly skilled Nigerian women footballers that have migrated to work in Scandinavian clubs, this article provides an analysis of how religious beliefs and practices function as resources for articulating, producing, and maintaining transnational mobility. Through taking part in transnational Pentecostal communities, Nigerian women migrants access networks and forms of knowledge that supports their status and mobility as labour migrants. Moreover, these women believe that their transnational and daily religious practices, such as prayer, are ways through which a transnationally mobile career can be achieved and sustained. Drawing on material from ethnographic fieldwork and in-depth interviews with migrant Nigerian women football players, I argue that religion provides these labour migrants with access to material, inter-personal and transcendental resources for achieving their career and migratory aspirations
