    Students Success Modeling: Most Important Factors

    The importance of retention rate for higher education institutions has encouraged data analysts to present various methods to predict at-risk students. The present study, motivated by the same encouragement, proposes a deep learning model trained with 121 features of diverse categories extracted or engineered out of the records of 60,822 postsecondary students. The model undertakes to identify students likely to graduate, the ones likely to transfer to a different school, and the ones likely to drop out and leave their higher education unfinished. This study undertakes to adjust its predictive methods for different stages of curricular progress of students. The temporal aspects introduced for this purpose are accounted for by incorporating layers of LSTM in the model. Our experiments demonstrate that distinguishing between to-be-graduate and at-risk students is reasonably achievable in the earliest stages, and then it rapidly improves, but the resolution within the latter category (dropout vs. transfer) depends on data accumulated over time. However, the model remarkably foresees the fate of students who stay in the school for three years. The model is also assigned to present the weightiest features in the procedure of prediction, both on institutional and student levels. A large, diverse sample size along with the investigation of more than one hundred extracted or engineered features in our study provide new insights into variables that affect students success, predict dropouts with reasonable accuracy, and shed light on the less investigated issue of transfer between colleges. More importantly, by providing individual-level predictions (as opposed to school-level predictions) and addressing the outcomes of transfers, this study improves the use of ML in the prediction of educational outcomes.Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures, 1 apendi

    The ELAV RNA-stability factor HuR binds the 5′-untranslated region of the human IGF-IR transcript and differentially represses cap-dependent and IRES-mediated translation

    The type I insulin-like growth factor receptor (IGF-IR) is an integral component in the control of cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis. The IGF-IR mRNA contains an extraordinarily long (1038 nt) 5′-untranslated region (5′-UTR), and we have characterized a diverse series of proteins interacting with this RNA sequence which may provide for intricate regulation of IGF-IR gene expression at the translational level. Here, we report the purification and identification of one of these IGF-IR 5′-UTR-binding proteins as HuR, using a novel RNA crosslinking/RNase elution strategy. Because HuR has been predominantly characterized as a 3′-UTR-binding protein, enhancing mRNA stability and generally increasing gene expression, we sought to determine whether HuR might serve a different function in the context of its binding the IGF-IR 5′-UTR. We found that HuR consistently repressed translation initiation through the IGF-IR 5′-UTR. The inhibition of translation by HuR was concentration dependent, and could be reversed in trans by addition of a fragment of the IGF-IR 5′-UTR containing the HuR binding sites as a specific competitor, or abrogated by deletion of the third RNA recognition motif of HuR. We determined that HuR repressed translation initiation through the IGF-IR 5′-UTR in cells as well, and that siRNA knockdown of HuR markedly increased IGF-IR protein levels. Interestingly, we also found that HuR potently inhibited IGF-IR translation mediated through internal ribosome entry. Kinetic assays were performed to investigate the mechanism of translation repression by HuR and the dynamic interplay between HuR and the translation apparatus. We found that HuR, occupying a cap-distal position, significantly delayed translation initiation mediated by cap-dependent scanning, but was eventually displaced from its binding site, directly or indirectly, as a consequence of ribosomal scanning. However, HuR perpetually blocked the activity of the IGF-IR IRES, apparently arresting the IRES-associated translation pre-initiation complex in an inactive state. This function of HuR as a 5′-UTR-binding protein and dual-purpose translation repressor may be critical for the precise regulation of IGF-IR expression essential to normal cellular homeostasis

    The Red Sea, Coastal Landscapes, and Hominin Dispersals

    This chapter provides a critical assessment of environment, landscape and resources in the Red Sea region over the past five million years in relation to archaeological evidence of hominin settlement, and of current hypotheses about the role of the region as a pathway or obstacle to population dispersals between Africa and Asia and the possible significance of coastal colonization. The discussion assesses the impact of factors such as topography and the distribution of resources on land and on the seacoast, taking account of geographical variation and changes in geology, sea levels and palaeoclimate. The merits of northern and southern routes of movement at either end of the Red Sea are compared. All the evidence indicates that there has been no land connection at the southern end since the beginning of the Pliocene period, but that short sea crossings would have been possible at lowest sea-level stands with little or no technical aids. More important than the possibilities of crossing the southern channel is the nature of the resources available in the adjacent coastal zones. There were many climatic episodes wetter than today, and during these periods water draining from the Arabian escarpment provided productive conditions for large mammals and human populations in coastal regions and eastwards into the desert. During drier episodes the coastal region would have provided important refugia both in upland areas and on the emerged shelves exposed by lowered sea level, especially in the southern sector and on both sides of the Red Sea. Marine resources may have offered an added advantage in coastal areas, but evidence for their exploitation is very limited, and their role has been over-exaggerated in hypotheses of coastal colonization

    From ductile to brittle: evolution and localization of deformation below a crustal detachment (Tinos, Cyclades, Greece)

    International audienceThe Cycladic Oligo-Miocene detachment of Tinos island is an example of a flat-lying extensional shear zone evolving into a low-angle brittle detachment. A clear continuum of extensional strain from ductile to brittle regime is observed in the footwall. The main brittle structures marking extension are shallow- and steeply dipping normal faults associated with subvertical extensional joints and veins. The earliest brittle structures are lowangle normal faults which commonly superimpose on, and reactivate, earlier (precursory) ductile shear bands, but newly formed low-angle normal faults could also be observed. Low-angle normal faults are cut by late steeply dipping normal faults. The inversion of fault slip data collected within, and away from, the main detachment zone shows that the direction of the minimum stress axis is strictly parallel to the NE-SW stretching lineation and that the maximum principal stress axis remained subvertical during the whole brittle evolution, in agreement with the subvertical attitude of veins throughout the island. The high angle of s1 to the main detachment suggests that the detachment was weak. This observation, together with the presence of a thick layer of cataclasites below the main detachment and the kinematic continuum from ductile to brittle, leads us to propose a kinematic model for the formation of the detachment. Boudinage at the crustal scale induces formation, near the brittle-ductile transition, of ductile shear zones near the edges of boudins. Shear zones are progressively exhumed and replaced by shallowdipping cataclastic shear zones when they reached the brittle field. Most of the displacement is achieved through cataclastic flow in the upper crust and only the last increment of strain gives rise to the formation of brittle faults. The formation of the low-angle brittle detachment is thus ''prepared'' by the ductile shear zone and the cataclasites and favored by the circulation of surface-derived fluids in the shear zone

    Adaptation and validation of a computerized neurocognitive battery in the Xhosa of South Africa

    Objective: Large-scale studies have revolutionized biomedical research, and neurocognitive tests can help elucidate the biological basis of neuropsychiatric diseases. However, studies have predominantly been conducted in Western settings. We describe the development and validation of a computerized battery (PennCNB) with the Xhosa population of South Africa. Method: Individuals with schizophrenia (n = 525) and a normative comparison group (n = 744) were balanced on age, sex, education, and region. Participants provided blood samples, were assessed psychiatrically, and were administered a PennCNB translation to isiXhosa, including measures of executive functions, episodic memory, complex cognition, social cognition, and sensorimotor speed. Feasibility was examined with test completion rates and input from administrators, and psychometric structural validity and associations with clinical and demographic characteristics were examined. Results: Tests were well tolerated by participants, as >87% had one (or fewer) test missing. Results suggested a similar factor structure to prior PennCNB studies in Western contexts, and expected age and sex effects were apparent. Furthermore, a similar profile of schizophrenia was observed, with neurocognitive deficits most pronounced for executive functions, especially attention, as well as memory, social cognition, and motor speed relative to complex cognition and sensorimotor speed. Conclusions: Results support the feasibility of implementing a culturally adapted computerized neurocognitive battery in sub-Saharan African settings and provide evidence supporting the concurrent validity of the translated instrument. Thus, the PennCNB is implementable on a large scale in non-Western contexts, shows expected factor structure, and can detect cognitive deficits associated with neuropsychiatric disorders. Obtaining valid measures of cognition by nonspecialized proctors is especially suitable in resource-limited settings, where traditional testing is prohibitive. Future work should establish normative standards, test–retest reliability, and sensitivity to treatment

    The effectiveness, acceptability and cost-effectiveness of psychosocial interventions for maltreated children and adolescents: an evidence synthesis.

    BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment is a substantial social problem that affects large numbers of children and young people in the UK, resulting in a range of significant short- and long-term psychosocial problems. OBJECTIVES: To synthesise evidence of the effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and acceptability of interventions addressing the adverse consequences of child maltreatment. STUDY DESIGN: For effectiveness, we included any controlled study. Other study designs were considered for economic decision modelling. For acceptability, we included any study that asked participants for their views. PARTICIPANTS: Children and young people up to 24 years 11 months, who had experienced maltreatment before the age of 17 years 11 months. INTERVENTIONS: Any psychosocial intervention provided in any setting aiming to address the consequences of maltreatment. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Psychological distress [particularly post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and anxiety, and self-harm], behaviour, social functioning, quality of life and acceptability. METHODS: Young Persons and Professional Advisory Groups guided the project, which was conducted in accordance with Cochrane Collaboration and NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination guidance. Departures from the published protocol were recorded and explained. Meta-analyses and cost-effectiveness analyses of available data were undertaken where possible. RESULTS: We identified 198 effectiveness studies (including 62 randomised trials); six economic evaluations (five using trial data and one decision-analytic model); and 73 studies investigating treatment acceptability. Pooled data on cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) for sexual abuse suggested post-treatment reductions in PTSD [standardised mean difference (SMD) -0.44 (95% CI -4.43 to -1.53)], depression [mean difference -2.83 (95% CI -4.53 to -1.13)] and anxiety [SMD -0.23 (95% CI -0.03 to -0.42)]. No differences were observed for post-treatment sexualised behaviour, externalising behaviour, behaviour management skills of parents, or parental support to the child. Findings from attachment-focused interventions suggested improvements in secure attachment [odds ratio 0.14 (95% CI 0.03 to 0.70)] and reductions in disorganised behaviour [SMD 0.23 (95% CI 0.13 to 0.42)], but no differences in avoidant attachment or externalising behaviour. Few studies addressed the role of caregivers, or the impact of the therapist-child relationship. Economic evaluations suffered methodological limitations and provided conflicting results. As a result, decision-analytic modelling was not possible, but cost-effectiveness analysis using effectiveness data from meta-analyses was undertaken for the most promising intervention: CBT for sexual abuse. Analyses of the cost-effectiveness of CBT were limited by the lack of cost data beyond the cost of CBT itself. CONCLUSIONS: It is not possible to draw firm conclusions about which interventions are effective for children with different maltreatment profiles, which are of no benefit or are harmful, and which factors encourage people to seek therapy, accept the offer of therapy and actively engage with therapy. Little is known about the cost-effectiveness of alternative interventions. LIMITATIONS: Studies were largely conducted outside the UK. The heterogeneity of outcomes and measures seriously impacted on the ability to conduct meta-analyses. FUTURE WORK: Studies are needed that assess the effectiveness of interventions within a UK context, which address the wider effects of maltreatment, as well as specific clinical outcomes.
