The Waterloo Musical Society was established on January 27, 1882 in Waterloo, Ontario. It was formed in order to cultivate the musical taste of the Waterloo citizens and to promote the musical improvement of the brass band established by Henry Glebe. The formal establishment of the Waterloo Musical Society had its roots in this band which functioned in the early 1860s. Of the conductors who succeeded Glebe, few remained for any length of time as it was not uncommon for a band to change leadership frequent ly in those times. Other early conductors included Mr. Schroeder, Thomas Schmidt (1880), and Theodore Zoeliner (1881). In 1882, Noah Zeller, a native of Breslau, Ontario was engaged as the conductor of the newly-founded Waterloo Musical Society. Zeller conducted the Waterloo Band from 1882 to 1900 and under his direction the band won contests with such regularity that eventually they were barred from competition for many years. During Zeller\u27s term, the band not only competed in tournaments in Ontario, but also participated in Sangerfeste (song festivals) both in Ontario and the United States. Mr. W. Philip, leader of the Waterloo Band from 1903 to 1910, was over sixty years of age when he came to Waterloo and was a leading Canadian musician at that time. W. R. Fritz Paul took over from Philip and was the first who brought the title of Professor to the Waterloo Band; thereafter all Waterloo bandmasters were called professor. Mr. J. Pillar, from Hazelton, Pennsylvania served the shortest term as leader and organized the first Boys\u27 Band in 1915. During the last two years of World War I, Mr. E. Trovarelli conducted the band. C. F. Thiele, a New York cornetist was hired in 1919 from a group of one hundred applicants, and remained as bandmaster until 1951. Thiele had a most profound influence on the Waterloo Musical Society and extended this influence through founding of the Waterloo Music Company and the Waterloo Metal Stampings Company in Waterloo. As founder of the Ontario Amateur Bands\u27 Association in 1922 and co-founder of the Canadian Bandmasters\u27 Association in 1931, his personal connections with such groups enhanced the prominence of the Waterloo Musical Society. Thiele\u27s contemporaries often referred to Waterloo as the Band Capital of Canada. The Waterloo Musical Society sponsored the Waterloo Band Festivals which were started in 1932 and, with the exception of a few years, were held until 1958. The festivals attracted bands from Canada and the United States, and the Canadian Bandmasters\u27 Conventions brought a number of important educators and musicians to Waterloo. These conventions, initiated in 1932, continued annually until the early 1960s. In addition the annual mid-winter meeting of the Canadian Bandmasters\u27 Association was held in Waterloo and was organized by C. F. Thiele and his staff of the Waterloo Music Company. During his term as bandmaster, Thiele also initiated a programme for junior bands, and attempted to establish a youth band camp at Bamberg, Ontario. After Thiele\u27s resignation in 1951, The Waterloo Band was directed by Fred Roy (1951- 1955), William Gallagher ( 1955-1961), and John Conrad Jr. ( 1962- ). The Waterloo Band, under Conrad\u27s direction, remains an active amateur organization and in 1984 continues to perform in the Waterloo area

    Tolkien and the \u3ci\u3eGawain\u3c/i\u3e-poet

One of Tolkien’s major academic works was the edition he prepared, with E.V. Gordon, of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Yet this poem is only one of four in identical dialect (an important point to Tolkien) and in the same manuscript. This paper considers the philological issues these poems raise, and shows how the theories, eccentricities and linguistics of the Gawain-poet were read and used by Tolkien

    Tolkien as a Post-War Writer

The Lord of the Rings, though unique in many ways, is only one of a series of fantasies published by English authors before, during, and just after World War II, works united in their deep concern with the nature of evil and their authors’ belief that politics had given them a novel understanding of this ancient concept. This paper sets Tolkien in this contemporary context and considers what has been unique in his understanding of the modern world

    The Black Ancestral Artist Path

The Black Ancestral Artist Path is a project dedicated to uncovering the migratory pattern between Black American Creatives from NY to Paris. Why has this trend continued today from those of the Lost Generation? What about France entices the American? And how does living there change their art and sense of self? This project also compared Black French artists and their understanding of the French colonial empire. When these two groups are brought together, how do they learn from one another? Black Americans are forced to reckon with the both the freedom and the privilege they experience being able to live in France. Whereas the Black French artists\u27 shed light on what it is like to live under a colonial presence. The wide arrays of interviews are deep, complex and idiosyncratic. And these conversations are juxtaposed with varying Black French and Black American Literature as a mirror for the interviewees who are living the same journey these authors detail

An Investigation of Obstetrical Practice Patterns Through Secondary Data Analysis and Qualitative Inquiry

Mothers and their unborn are a vulnerable population. Despite overwhelming advances in health care and technology, the United States\u27 indicators of maternal and infant mortality are dismal. To lay the foundation for a research trajectory ultimately aimed at improving the experiences and outcomes of pregnancy, two research projects were undertaken to investigate the impact of practice patterns for elective delivery on the current obstetrical paradigm. A qualitative clinical case study explored antepartum recommendations for cesarean section following the implied diagnoses of inevitable labor dystocia secondary to maternal physical stature in two healthy women. The women\u27s perspectives on their experiences of leaving the traditional medical model of obstetrical care, along with their actual antepartum and intrapartum medical record data should spur conversation between all perinatal health care stakeholders. To obtain a broad view of the current obstetrical milieu, a large secondary data analysis was conducted on two years of birth certificate data from 2008-2009 in one large southwestern United States county with high delivery rates. The study was designed specifically to explore the impact of obstetrical practice patterns across hospitals on the phenomenon of early term birth at 37-38 weeks gestation. Early term infants have consistently been reported as incurring higher rates of neonatal morbidity and mortality compared to their full term counterparts. Differences in rates of early term births across hospitals resulting from elective deliveries revealed the need for continuing education of health care providers, nurses and the child-bearing population

Bridging minds and markets: The South African experience

At present an historical conjuncture of separate and essential unrelated developments concerning environmental management are occurring in South Africa. These include the issues of standards assurance, certification of environmental practitioners and the development of curricula for a professional science degree at tertiary level. All these are occurring in the context of a rapidly expanding job market into which graduates with widely varying educational standards and practical competence are entering. This article reports on a survey of professionals in environmental impact assessment and environmental management in South Africa that elicited opinions on the quality and appropriateness of professional training. It seeks to inform debate concerning these topics and to highlight limitations in the structure and content of contemporary education. It is argued that there is little standardization across curricula and that the core competencies as recognised by professionals are frequently being neglected

Exploiting Abstract Syntax Trees to Locate Software Defects

Context. Software defect prediction aims to reduce the large costs involved with faults in a software system. A wide range of traditional software metrics have been evaluated as potential defect indicators. These traditional metrics are derived from the source code or from the software development process. Studies have shown that no metric clearly out performs another and identifying defect-prone code using traditional metrics has reached a performance ceiling. Less traditional metrics have been studied, with these metrics being derived from the natural language of the source code. These newer, less traditional and finer grained metrics have shown promise within defect prediction. Aims. The aim of this dissertation is to study the relationship between short Java constructs and the faultiness of source code. To study this relationship this dissertation introduces the concept of a Java sequence and Java code snippet. Sequences are created by using the Java abstract syntax tree. The ordering of the nodes within the abstract syntax tree creates the sequences, while small sub sequences of this sequence are the code snippets. The dissertation tries to find a relationship between the code snippets and faulty and non-faulty code. This dissertation also looks at the evolution of the code snippets as a system matures, to discover whether code snippets significantly associated with faulty code change over time. Methods. To achieve the aims of the dissertation, two main techniques have been developed; finding defective code and extracting Java sequences and code snippets. Finding defective code has been split into two areas - finding the defect fix and defect insertion points. To find the defect fix points an implementation of the bug-linking algorithm has been developed, called S + e . Two algorithms were developed to extract the sequences and the code snippets. The code snippets are analysed using the binomial test to find which ones are significantly associated with faulty and non-faulty code. These techniques have been performed on five different Java datasets; ArgoUML, AspectJ and three releases of Eclipse.JDT.core Results. There are significant associations between some code snippets and faulty code. Frequently occurring fault-prone code snippets include those associated with identifiers, method calls and variables. There are some code snippets significantly associated with faults that are always in faulty code. There are 201 code snippets that are snippets significantly associated with faults across all five of the systems. The technique is unable to find any significant associations between code snippets and non-faulty code. The relationship between code snippets and faults seems to change as the system evolves with more snippets becoming fault-prone as Eclipse.JDT.core evolved over the three releases analysed. Conclusions. This dissertation has introduced the concept of code snippets into software engineering and defect prediction. The use of code snippets offers a promising approach to identifying potentially defective code. Unlike previous approaches, code snippets are based on a comprehensive analysis of low level code features and potentially allow the full set of code defects to be identified. Initial research into the relationship between code snippets and faults has shown that some code constructs or features are significantly related to software faults. The significant associations between code snippets and faults has provided additional empirical evidence to some already researched bad constructs within defect prediction. The code snippets have shown that some constructs significantly associated with faults are located in all five systems, and although this set is small finding any defect indicators that transfer successfully from one system to another is rare
