Pictures of the past : Benjamin and Barthes on photography.

This paper explores the key moments in Benjamin’s and Barthes’s analyses of the cultural significance of the photograph. For Benjamin these are; the optical unconscious, the transmission of aura, the representation of cultural and political decay and proto-surrealist political commentary. For Barthes they are; the techniques of the photographer, the studium, the punctum and the ecstasy of the image. These rather different approaches to photography reveal a common concern with history. Both authors have written about the nature of historical understanding and photography has provided both with a powerful metaphor. What emerges from their analyses of photographs is that each evokes a double moment of historical awareness; of being both in the present and in the past. For Benjamin this is the ‘spark of contingency’ with which the aura of past existence shines in the present. For Barthes it is the ‘ça-a-été’, the emotional stab of awareness that what is present and visible in the photograph is irretrievably lost in the past

Period-Luminosity-Colour distribution and classification of Galactic oxygen-rich LPVs

The absolute K magnitudes and kinematic parameters of about 350 oxygen-rich Long-Period Variable stars are calibrated, by means of an up-to-date maximum-likelihood method, using Hipparcos parallaxes and proper motions together with radial velocities and, as additional data, periods and V-K colour indices. Four groups, differing by their kinematics and mean magnitudes, are found. For each of them, we also obtain the distributions of magnitude, period and de-reddened colour of the base population, as well as de-biased period-luminosity-colour relations and their two-dimensional projections. The SRa semiregulars do not seem to constitute a separate class of LPVs. The SRb appear to belong to two populations of different ages. In a PL diagram, they constitute two evolutionary sequences towards the Mira stage. The Miras of the disk appear to pulsate on a lower-order mode. The slopes of their de-biased PL and PC relations are found to be very different from the ones of the Oxygen Miras of the LMC. This suggests that a significant number of so-called Miras of the LMC are misclassified. This also suggests that the Miras of the LMC do not constitute a homogeneous group, but include a significant proportion of metal-deficient stars, suggesting a relatively smooth star formation history. As a consequence, one may not trivially transpose the LMC period-luminosity relation from one galaxy to the other.Comment: 13 pages, 23 figures. Accepted for publication in A&A

Structural health monitoring of high voltage electrical switch ceramic insulators in seismic areas

High voltage electrical switches are crucial components to restart rapidly the electrical network right after an earthquake. But there currently exists no automatic procedure to check if these ceramic insulators have suffered after an earthquake, and there exists no method to recertify a given switch. To deploy a vibration-based structural health monitoring method on ceramic insulators a large shake table able to generate accelerations up to 3 g was used. The idea underlying the SHM procedure proposed here is to monitor the apparition of cracks in the ceramic insulators at their early stage through the change of the resonant frequency of the first mode of the structure and the non-linearity that they generate in its dynamic response. The Exponential Sine Sweep Method is used to estimate a nonlinear model of the structure under test from only one dynamic measurement. A classic linear damage index (DI) based on the variation of the frequency of the first mode is compared to an original nonlinear one using the ratio of the amplitudes of the third harmonic and the fundamental frequency. Results show that both DIs increase monotonically with the number of solicitations, thus validating the use of the nonlinear DI. It is also shown that the nonlinear DI presented here seems more sensitive than the linear one

Comment réintroduire les savoirs face à l'éducation au développement durable ? Exemple des filières professionnelles d'aménagement des territoires

International audienceLa communication se place dans le contexte émergent de l'éducation au développement durable à l'université. Les interrogations portent sur la légitimité d'éduquer au développement durable et argumentent la nécessité de mieux structurer les contenus éducatifs des filières universitaires face à la proximité des pratiques sociales. La réintroduction des savoirs savants nécessite un re-positionnement didactique. Une méthode applicative est proposée. Elle se base sur l'analyse des savoirs naturels estudiantins, lesquels sont confrontés à des référentiels supposés faire l'objet de consensus. Les focalisations puis les défalcations, outils empruntés aux représentations sociales, identifient les savoirs à réintroduire. L'objectif est de tendre vers un véritable enseignement au développement durable. Une étude de cas est réalisée sur des filières professionnelles de l'aménagement des territoires. Elle montre comment une méthode de repositionnement didactique basée sur les représentations sociales peut structurer un enseignement susceptible de réduire les risques de dérives normatives ou relativistes.
