mit einer Chronik des Institutes für Fleischhygiene und –technologie an der neu gegründeten Veterinärmedizinischen Fakultät, dem späteren Fachbereich Veterinärmedizin, der Freien Universität Berlin und einem Plädoyer für die tierärztlichen Lebensmittelwissenschaften

Es ist eine glückliche Fügung, wenn gegen Ende eines Lebens noch Zeit und Energie und genügend Erinnerungsfähigkeit vorhanden sind, eine Bilanz des Lebens und des beruflichen Wirkens zu erstellen, damit nicht alles ins Vergessen abgleitet, was einmal durchdacht, durchlebt und vielleicht auch erduldet und erlitten wurde. Insbesondere soll auch der Glücksmomente gedacht werden, die es bei Begegnungen und gemeinsamen Unternehmungen mit netten Menschen, Berufskollegen und Mitarbeitern gab. Die Ausführungen erfolgten in der Annahme, dass ein Berufsleben in einer politisch sehr bewegten Zeit, außerdem in einer ungewöhnlichen Universitätsstadt, Gründe für eine retrospektive Aufarbeitung von zeitgeschichtlichen Ereignissen sein könnten, mit Höhen und Tiefen, Erfolgen und Misserfolgen. Leichter gesagt als getan! Es zeigte sich, dass es selbst in Zeiten moderner Kommunikation schwer ist, alles Wichtige in einen chronologischen Zusammenhang zu bringen. Wäre da nicht eine Dokumentation vorhanden gewesen, die von einer technischen Assistentin so peu à peu während des eigentlichen Arbeitsablaufes erstellt worden war. Und wären da nicht akribisch gesammelte Einzeldokumente vorhanden gewesen. Und natürlich dienten die Ergebnisse einer regen publizistischen Tätigkeit im Laufe vieler Jahre dazu, diesen vorliegenden Bericht zu erstellen. Ein Positivum hat eine solche Aufarbeitung auch für den Autor selbst. Er erkennt immer klarer die Nuancen einer effektiven Tätigkeit auf wissenschaftlichem Gebiet und zugleich das damit verbundene Fehlleiten von Energie und Zeit auf Nebenschauplätze und schön erscheinende Spielwiesen. Möge diese historisch ausgerichtete Bilanz das geneigte Interesse möglichst vieler Leser finden, die an einem Einblick in die bewegten Zeiten der ständigen Reformen an den Universitäten in Berlin nach dem Krieg, im Kalten Krieg und zu Zeiten der Wiedervereinigung interessiert sind! Möge der Leser auch ab und an zum Schmunzeln animiert werden ob der möglicherweise stark persönlich geprägten Interpretationen von Sachverhalten! Auch datenschutzrechtliche Gesichtspunkte wurden, soweit es notwendig schien, zu berücksichtigen versucht. Möge Vieles gefallen und nur wenig stören oder irritieren! In diesem Sinne etwas Neugier und Interesse und auch etwas Freude beim Einsteigen in einen Bericht aus einer bewegten Zeit

Benefits from using mixed precision computations in the ELPA-AEO and ESSEX-II eigensolver projects

We first briefly report on the status and recent achievements of the ELPA-AEO (Eigenvalue Solvers for Petaflop Applications - Algorithmic Extensions and Optimizations) and ESSEX II (Equipping Sparse Solvers for Exascale) projects. In both collaboratory efforts, scientists from the application areas, mathematicians, and computer scientists work together to develop and make available efficient highly parallel methods for the solution of eigenvalue problems. Then we focus on a topic addressed in both projects, the use of mixed precision computations to enhance efficiency. We give a more detailed description of our approaches for benefiting from either lower or higher precision in three selected contexts and of the results thus obtained

Hingegen wird in drei Themenbereichen "Die Universitätsbibliothek - professionelle Partnerin für Lehre , Studium und Forschung", "Innovationen für die campusweiten Dienstleistungen der Universitätsbibliothek" und "Ein scharfes Profil für die Ruhr-Universität Bochum - der Beitrag der Universitätsbibliothek" auf die Rolle und Funktion der Universitätsbibliothek Bochum bis hin zu aktuellen Veränderungen bei Arbeitsabläufen in der Universitätsbibliothek im Jahr 2012 eingegangen

Neuromarketing and consumer neuroscience:contributions to neurology

Background: 'Neuromarketing' is a term that has often been used in the media in recent years. These public discussions have generally centered around potential ethical aspects and the public fear of negative consequences for society in general, and consumers in particular. However, positive contributions to the scientific discourse from developing a biological model that tries to explain context-situated human behavior such as consumption have often been neglected. We argue for a differentiated terminology, naming commercial applications of neuroscientific methods 'neuromarketing' and scientific ones 'consumer neuroscience'. While marketing scholars have eagerly integrated neuroscientific evidence into their theoretical framework, neurology has only recently started to draw its attention to the results of consumer neuroscience.Discussion: In this paper we address key research topics of consumer neuroscience that we think are of interest for neurologists; namely the reward system, trust and ethical issues. We argue that there are overlapping research topics in neurology and consumer neuroscience where both sides can profit from collaboration. Further, neurologists joining the public discussion of ethical issues surrounding neuromarketing and consumer neuroscience could contribute standards and experience gained in clinical research.Summary: We identify the following areas where consumer neuroscience could contribute to the field of neurology:. First, studies using game paradigms could help to gain further insights into the underlying pathophysiology of pathological gambling in Parkinson's disease, frontotemporal dementia, epilepsy, and Huntington's disease.Second, we identify compulsive buying as a common interest in neurology and consumer neuroscience. Paradigms commonly used in consumer neuroscience could be applied to patients suffering from Parkinson's disease and frontotemporal dementia to advance knowledge of this important behavioral symptom.Third, trust research in the medical context lacks empirical behavioral and neuroscientific evidence. Neurologists entering this field of research could profit from the extensive knowledge of the biological foundation of trust that scientists in economically-orientated neurosciences have gained.Fourth, neurologists could contribute significantly to the ethical debate about invasive methods in neuromarketing and consumer neuroscience. Further, neurologists should investigate biological and behavioral reactions of neurological patients to marketing and advertising measures, as they could show special consumer vulnerability and be subject to target marketing

A Roadmap for HEP Software and Computing R&D for the 2020s

Particle physics has an ambitious and broad experimental programme for the coming decades. This programme requires large investments in detector hardware, either to build new facilities and experiments, or to upgrade existing ones. Similarly, it requires commensurate investment in the R&D of software to acquire, manage, process, and analyse the shear amounts of data to be recorded. In planning for the HL-LHC in particular, it is critical that all of the collaborating stakeholders agree on the software goals and priorities, and that the efforts complement each other. In this spirit, this white paper describes the R&D activities required to prepare for this software upgrade.Peer reviewe

Pan-cancer analysis of whole genomes

Cancer is driven by genetic change, and the advent of massively parallel sequencing has enabled systematic documentation of this variation at the whole-genome scale(1-3). Here we report the integrative analysis of 2,658 whole-cancer genomes and their matching normal tissues across 38 tumour types from the Pan-Cancer Analysis of Whole Genomes (PCAWG) Consortium of the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). We describe the generation of the PCAWG resource, facilitated by international data sharing using compute clouds. On average, cancer genomes contained 4-5 driver mutations when combining coding and non-coding genomic elements; however, in around 5% of cases no drivers were identified, suggesting that cancer driver discovery is not yet complete. Chromothripsis, in which many clustered structural variants arise in a single catastrophic event, is frequently an early event in tumour evolution; in acral melanoma, for example, these events precede most somatic point mutations and affect several cancer-associated genes simultaneously. Cancers with abnormal telomere maintenance often originate from tissues with low replicative activity and show several mechanisms of preventing telomere attrition to critical levels. Common and rare germline variants affect patterns of somatic mutation, including point mutations, structural variants and somatic retrotransposition. A collection of papers from the PCAWG Consortium describes non-coding mutations that drive cancer beyond those in the TERT promoter(4); identifies new signatures of mutational processes that cause base substitutions, small insertions and deletions and structural variation(5,6); analyses timings and patterns of tumour evolution(7); describes the diverse transcriptional consequences of somatic mutation on splicing, expression levels, fusion genes and promoter activity(8,9); and evaluates a range of more-specialized features of cancer genomes(8,10-18).Peer reviewe
