This paper examines the prosody of Chin’s eponymous poem, The Phoenix Gone, The Terrace Empty, through an eco-critical lens. While it does not dismiss the hybrid cultural influences of the poem, it focuses on the ways the non-human agents, or the figures in the poem’s landscape, “speak.” Poetry, like the poem’s terraced gardens, traces tension between the controlling human forces experienced by the narrating female I personas and the natural world’s affective inclinations
Finite Correlation Length Scaling in Lorentz-Invariant Gapless iPEPS Wave Functions
It is an open question how well tensor network states in the form of an
infinite projected entangled pair states (iPEPS) tensor network can approximate
gapless quantum states of matter. Here we address this issue for two different
physical scenarios: i) a conformally invariant quantum critical point
in the incarnation of the transverse field Ising model on the square lattice
and ii) spontaneously broken continuous symmetries with gapless Goldstone modes
exemplified by the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg and XY models on the
square lattice. We find that the energetically best wave functions display {\em
finite} correlation lengths and we introduce a powerful finite correlation
length scaling framework for the analysis of such finite- iPEPS states. The
framework is important i) to understand the mild limitations of the finite-
iPEPS manifold in representing Lorentz-invariant, gapless many body quantum
states and ii) to put forward a practical scheme in which the finite
correlation length combined with field theory inspired formulae can be
used to extrapolate the data to infinite correlation length, i.e. to the
thermodynamic limit. The finite correlation length scaling framework opens the
way for further exploration of quantum matter with an (expected)
Lorentz-invariant, massless low-energy description, with many applications
ranging from condensed matter to high-energy physics.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figure
Experimental Investigation of Launch Vehicle Transient Input Simulation in Payload Tests
The technique of electronically simulating the structural dynamics of a launch vehicle in transient tests of payloads using multiple vibration excitation systems was investigated. The development of computer programs to determine transfer functions, synthesize shaker forcing functions, and control vibration exciters is described. A demonstration test using the techniques was described and results are presented. The evaluation of the potential for applying this technique to large Shuttle payloads is discussed

Analytical study of lightweight acoustic shrouds for shuttle experiments and payloads
Results are presented of acoustic tests performed on an STS payload shroud simulator to determine the effects of a helium filled liner on the noise reduction characteristics. The basic test program included the following configurations: (1) bare shroud (baseline configuration); (2) shroud with empty liner; (3) shroud with liner filled with air; and (4) shroud with liner filled with helium. The results indicate negligible effects from the helium. Configurations for liner filled with air, and liner filled with helium were also tested. The data from these configurations indicate increased noise reduction from the use of helium
