Relationship among Soil Biophysicochemical Properties, Agricultural Practices and Climate Factors Influencing Soil Phosphatase Activity in Agricultural Land

Phosphorus (P) is a vital macronutrient crucial for crop productivity. Plants absorb P salts, mainly orthophosphate, from the soil, yet the primary P source resides in organic materials. Acid and alkaline phosphatases (the predominant forms of soil phosphomonoesterases (APases)) are crucial for alleviating P deficiency in plants and play a vital role in releasing P from organic materials via hydrolysis. Our aim was to summarize the direction of the relationship between a variety of influential factors on acid and alkaline phosphatase activity in agricultural lands and identify gaps in knowledge. Our findings indicate a strong linkage between both APases and soil pH, positively influenced by clay content, organic matter, microbial biomass carbon, and nitrogen. Adopting healthy soil practices like balanced organic fertilizer usage, optimal soil water levels, reduced tillage, crop rotation, and using beneficial plant microbes help boost both APase activity. However, the connection between APases and crop productivity remains uncertain due to insufficient research in this area. We identified gaps in knowledge in relation to meso-macrofauna, alongside essential plant nutrients such as potassium, nutrient ratios, and the synergistic effects of various factors on APase response. Understanding the rapid, efficient assimilation of P through APases in the plant-soil and/or plant-microbiota ecosystem it can be crucial for crop productivity and yields

Beyond classroom walls : high school foreign language learning with Linguistic Landscape activities

In addition to its widespread use in various disciplines, LL has garnered attention from researchers in education for its role in enhancing language learning and promoting linguistic diversity. However, its systematic integration into language teaching contexts, particularly in high school settings, remains limited. This paper aims to demonstrate how LL-centered activities were designed for integration into an 11th-grade English classroom in a public high school in southeastern Turkey. Over a 12-week period with 32 students, three LL-oriented tasks-Designing a job advertisement, Creating a T-shirt design, and Crafting a 'Wanted' sign-all aligned with the curriculum were implemented. Following the stages outlined by the pedagogical model of Linguistic Landscapes in Second Language Teaching and Learning (LLinL2TL), LL activities were systematically integrated. The objective is to provide a comprehensive illustration of the step-by-step integration of LL resources into high school English classrooms, supplemented by sample student works to offer a clear overview of the process. The study concludes by offering recommendations and implications for language education professionals.A més del seu ús generalitzat en diverses disciplines, la Lingüística del Paisatge (LP) ha cridat l'atenció dels investigadors en l'àmbit de l'educació pel seu paper en millorar l'aprenentatge de llengües i promoure la diversitat lingüística. No obstant això, la seva integració sistemàtica en contextos d'ensenyament de llengües, especialment en entorns de secundària, roman limitada. Aquest article pretén demostrar com es van dissenyar activitats centrades en la LP per a la seva integració en una aula d'anglès de 11è curs en una escola secundària pública al sud-est de Turquia. Durant un període de 12 setmanes amb 32 alumnes, es van implementar tres tasques orientades a la LP: Dissenyar un anunci de feina, Crear un disseny de samarreta i Elaborar un cartell de 'Es busca', totes alineades amb el currículum. Seguint les etapes indicades pel model pedagògic de Paisatges Lingüístics en l'Ensenyament i Aprenentatge de Segones Llengües (PLenEAL2), les activitats de LP es van integrar de manera sistemàtica. L'objectiu és proporcionar una il·lustració completa de la integració pas a pas de recursos de LP a les aules d'anglès de secundària, complementada amb mostres del treball dels alumnes per oferir una visió clara del procés. L'estudi conclou amb recomanacions i implicacions per als professionals de l'educació lingüística.Además de su uso generalizado en diversas disciplinas, el Paisaje Lingüístico (PL) ha captado la atención de los investigadores en educación por su papel en mejorar el aprendizaje de idiomas y promover la diversidad lingüística. Sin embargo, su integración sistemática en contextos de enseñanza de idiomas, especialmente en entornos de secundaria, sigue siendo limitada. Este artículo tiene como objetivo demostrar cómo diseñé actividades centradas en el PL para su integración en un aula de inglés de undécimo grado en una escuela secundaria pública en el sureste de Turquía. A lo largo de un período de 12 semanas con 32 estudiantes, implementé tres tareas orientadas al PL: diseñar un anuncio de trabajo, crear un diseño de camiseta y elaborar un cartel de "Se busca", todas alineadas con el plan de estudios. Siguiendo las etapas delineadas por el modelo pedagógico de Paisajes Lingüísticos en la Enseñanza y Aprendizaje de Segundas Lenguas (PLenEAL2), integré sistemáticamente actividades relacionadas con el PL. El objetivo es proporcionar una ilustración completa de la integración paso a paso de los recursos del PL en aulas de inglés de secundaria, complementada con trabajos de muestra de estudiantes para ofrecer una visión clara del proceso. El estudio concluye ofreciendo recomendaciones e implicaciones para los profesionales de la educación lingüística.En plus de son utilisation généralisée dans diverses disciplines, la Linguistique du Paysage (LP) a attiré l'attention des chercheurs en éducation pour son rôle dans l'amélioration de l'apprentissage des langues et la promotion de la diversité linguistique. Cependant, son intégration systématique dans les contextes d'enseignement des langues, en particulier dans les lycées, reste limitée. Cet article vise à démontrer comment des activités centrées sur la LP ont été conçues pour être intégrées dans une classe d'anglais de 11e année dans un lycée public du sud-est de la Turquie. Sur une période de 12 semaines avec 32 élèves, trois tâches orientées vers la LP - la conception d'une annonce d'emploi, la création d'un design de t-shirt et la rédaction d'une affiche "Recherché" - toutes alignées sur le programme, ont été mises en œuvre. Suivant les étapes définies par le modèle pédagogique des Paysages Linguistiques dans l'Enseignement et l'Apprentissage des Langues Secondes (PLdansEAL2), les activités de LP ont été intégrées de manière systématique. L'objectif est de fournir une illustration complète de l'intégration étape par étape des ressources de LP dans les salles de classe d'anglais du lycée, complétée par des travaux d'élèves exemples pour offrir une vue d'ensemble claire du processus. L'étude se conclut en offrant des recommandations et des implications pour les professionnels de l'éducation linguistique

Noves metodologies per millorar l'estudi de l'addició als videojocs

Investigadors de la UAB i de l'IDIBELL han revisat la informació obtinguda fins ara amb una nova metodologia per estudiar quins senyals biomèdics cerebrals estan implicats en l'addició als videojocs. Han analitzat les alteracions que el nou procediment ha permès detectar en tres sistemes principals de connectivitat del cervell i en detallen els efectes a nivell afectiu, cognitiu i conductual.Investigadores de la UAB y del IDIBELL han revisado la información obtenida hasta ahora con una nueva metodología para estudiar qué señales biomédicas cerebrales están implicadas en la adición a los videojuegos. Han analizado las alteraciones que el nuevo procedimiento ha permitido detectar en tres sistemas principales de conectividad del cerebro y detallan sus efectos a nivel afectivo, cognitivo y conductual.Researchers at UAB and IDIBELL have reviewed the information obtained so far using a new methodology to study which brain biomedical signals are involved in video game addiction. They have analyzed the alterations detect with the new procedure in three main connectivity systems of the brain and detail the effects of these disfunction at an affective, cognitive, and behavioral level

La intersecció de la justícia ambiental i les emissions del transport a Barcelona

Un estudi recent de la UAB revela les dimensions polítiques de la contaminació atmosfèrica de Barcelona. La investigació demostra que les estructures de poder vinculades al patriarcat, el racisme i l'edatisme influeixen en els hàbits de desplaçament i les emissions d'òxids de nitrogen (NOx). Els resultats subratllen la necessitat de polítiques que abordin les desigualtats socials per a millorar la qualitat de l'aire i promoure la justícia mediambiental.Un estudio reciente de la UAB revela las dimensiones políticas de la contaminación atmosférica de Barcelona. La investigación demuestra que las estructuras de poder vinculadas al patriarcado, el racismo y el edadismo influyen en los hábitos de desplazamiento y las emisiones de óxidos de nitrógeno (NOx). Development of a long noncoding RNA-based machine learning model to predict COVID-19 in-hospital mortality

Tools for predicting COVID-19 outcomes enable personalized healthcare, potentially easing the disease burden. This collaborative study by 15 institutions across Europe aimed to develop a machine learning model for predicting the risk of in-hospital mortality post-SARS-CoV-2 infection. Blood samples and clinical data from 1286 COVID-19 patients collected from 2020 to 2023 across four cohorts in Europe and Canada were analyzed, with 2906 long non-coding RNAs profiled using targeted sequencing. From a discovery cohort combining three European cohorts and 804 patients, age and the long non-coding RNA LEF1-AS1 were identified as predictive features, yielding an AUC of 0.83 (95% CI 0.82-0.84) and a balanced accuracy of 0.78 (95% CI 0.77-0.79) with a feedforward neural network classifier. Validation in an independent Canadian cohort of 482 patients showed consistent performance. Cox regression analysis indicated that higher levels of LEF1-AS1 correlated with reduced mortality risk (age-adjusted hazard ratio 0.54, 95% CI 0.40-0.74). Quantitative PCR validated LEF1-AS1's adaptability to be measured in hospital settings. Here, we demonstrate a promising predictive model for enhancing COVID-19 patient management

OTS panel : a cohort study to explore the relationship between work organization and health in Spain

It is well known that work has a great influence on the well-being of workers. In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, it seems evident that work organization, in particular, plays a key role to face and control a pandemic. Consequently, it is essential to establish specific and sustainable tools to further study the relationship between work organization and workers' health. The aim of this paper is to describe the study design and baseline data of the OTS PANEL ("OTS" stands for "Work Organization and Health" in Spanish). Methods: Panel-type cohort study to be carried out annually applying an online self-administered questionnaire. Work organization and health indicators and their corresponding questions were selected through a multistep process carried out by a team composed by professionals of different disciplines. The sample is composed of n =1824 salaried workers, aged 25-64, residing in Spain. Results: Mean response time was 17.4 ± 7 min (median 15.8). 84.6 % of the indicators had percentages of missing values lower than 3 %, with labor market insecurity being the highest (5.8 %). We compute 39 indicators in which, except for a few cases, women and manual workers show consistently worse results. Conclusions: OTS PANEL can represent a valuable information source in Spain to contribute to generate solid evidence for research and for decision-making to improve the living and health conditions of the working population

Pathways to 15-Minute City adoption : can our understanding of climate policies' acceptability explain the backlash towards x-minute city programs?

Altres ajuts: acords transformatius de la UABUnidad de excelencia María de Maeztu CEX2019-000940-MIn recent months, 15-min city policies have faced significant backlash across social media, in opinion pieces, and even through street demonstrations, casting doubt on the future of x-minute city policies as effective tools in the fight against climate change. The protests and backlash not only challenge the effective implementation of x-minute city policies, but also highlight our lack of understanding regarding which acceptability factors affect public reactance to this new kind of urban policy. This paper reviews the existing literature to reveal the four main factors shaping policy acceptability. It then juxtaposes these factors against the common criticisms leveled at the 15-min city model. This comparative analysis not only illuminates the limitations of applying traditional policy frameworks to the x-minute city context, but also identifies critical gaps in the existing literature. By bridging this divide, we aid policymakers in navigating the spectrum of public skepticism of the 15-min city model, from addressing and debunking conspiracy theories to engaging with scientifically-grounded critiques. Our findings offer a roadmap for transforming these innovative urban planning concepts into widely embraced solutions for climate change mitigation

Coach-athlete relationships and life skills development among Brazilian handball players : A prospective study

This study was to examine the prospective associations between coach-athlete relationship (CAR) and life skills development in youth handball players. This study employed a longitudinal research design. A total of 78 male handball players completed the Life Skills Scale for Sport and the Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire over three waves of data collection: start of the season; midseason and end of the season. Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance Pearson's Correlation and Linear Multiple Regression (p<.05). The findings indicated the three dimensions of CAR seem to have higher effect on life skills subscales as the season progressed (i.e., higher effect on life skills at T3 compared to T2 and T1). Commitment and Complementarity were positively associated with several life skills subscales at all three timepoints. Results suggest that the quality of the CAR is an important determinant for the development of life skills in youth handball players across the sports season.Este estudio tuvo como objetivo examinar las posibles asociaciones entre la relación entrenador-atleta (CAR) y el desarrollo de habilidades para la vida en jugadores juveniles de balonmano. Este estudio empleó un diseño de investigación longitudinal. Un total de 78 jugadores masculinos de balonmano completaron la Escala de Habilidades para la Vida Deportiva y la Escala de Entrenadores. Cuestionario sobre la relación con los atletas en tres oleadas de recopilación de datos: inicio de la temporada; mitad de temporada y final de temporada. Los datos se analizaron mediante análisis multivariado de varianza, correlación de Pearson y regresión lineal múltiple (p<0,05). Los hallazgos indicaron que las tres dimensiones de CAR parecen tener un mayor efecto en las subescalas de habilidades para la vida a medida que avanzaba la temporada (es decir, un mayor efecto sobre las habilidades para la vida en T3 en comparación con T2 y T1). El compromiso y la complementariedad se asociaron positivamente con varias subescalas de habilidades para la vida en los tres momentos. Los resultados sugieren que la calidad del CAR es un determinante importante para el desarrollo de habilidades para la vida en jugadores juveniles de balonmano a lo largo de la temporada deportiva
