The morphofunctional implications of the glenoid labrum of the glenohumeral joint in hominoids

    No full text
Objectives: a morphocline of the glenoid cavity has been used to infer differences in locomotor behaviors; however, the glenoid cavity is surrounded by the glenoid labrum, a fibrocartilaginous structure that could influence the functionality of the glenoid. The objectives of this study are to explore the effects of the glenoid labrum on the area, depth, and morphology of the glenoid cavity in primates. - Materials and Methods : photogrammetry was used to build 3D models of the glenoid, with and without the labrum, and three- (3D) and two-dimensional (2D) geometric morphometrics (GM) was applied. 2D areas were collected from zenithal images for glenoids with and without labrum to evaluate the availability of articular surface area. - Results: in the 2D GM the morphocline is present in the dry-bone sample but not with the presence of the glenoid labrum. In the 3D GM there are differences between species mainly concerning the depth of the glenoid cavity. 2D areas reveal that the amount of articular area of the glenoid cavity increases with the presence of the labrum, particularly in humans. - Discussion: the glenoid labrum changes the shape, increases the depth and the surface area of the glenoid cavity, particularly in humans. Therefore, the glenoid labrum might hold a functional role, increasing the stability of the glenohumeral joint of primates in general, and especially in humans

Decapitation in the long-necked Triassic marine reptile Tanystropheus

    No full text
Altres ajuts: CERCA Programme/Generalitat de CatalunyaExtreme neck elongation was a common evolutionary strategy among Mesozoic marine reptiles, occurring independently in several lineages1,2. Despite its evolutionary success, such an elongate neck might have been particularly susceptible to predation1, but direct evidence for this possibility has been lacking. Composed of only 13 hyperelongate vertebrae and associated strut-like ribs, the configuration of the long neck of the Triassic archosauromorph Tanystropheus is unique among tetrapods. It was probably stiffened and used to catch prey through an ambush-strategy2. Here, we show that the neck was completely severed in two Tanystropheus specimens (Figure 1), most likely due to a predatory attack, providing vivid evidence of predator-prey interactions among Mesozoic marine reptiles that are rarely preserved in the fossil record. The recurring incidence of decapitation suggests that the elongate neck was a functional weak spot in Tanystropheus, and possibly the long-necked marine reptile bauplan more generally

Number of limit cycles for planar systems with invariant algebraic curves

    No full text
For planar polynomials systems the existence of an invariant algebraic curve limits the number of limit cycles not contained in this curve. We present a general approach to prove non-existence of periodic orbits not contained in this given algebraic curve. When the method is applied to parametric families of polynomial systems that have limit cycles for some values of the parameters, our result leads to effective algebraic conditions on the parameters that force non-existence of the periodic orbits. As applications we consider several families of quadratic systems: the ones having some quadratic invariant algebraic curve, the known ones having an algebraic limit cycle, a family having a cubic invariant algebraic curve and other ones. For any quadratic system with two invariant algebraic curves we prove a finiteness result for its number of limit cycles that only depends on the degrees of these curves. We also consider some families of cubic systems having either a quadratic or a cubic invariant algebraic curve and a family of Liénard systems. We also give a new and simple proof of the known fact that quadratic systems with an invariant parabola have at most one limit cycle. In fact, what we show is that this result is a consequence of the similar result for quadratic systems with an invariant straight line

Distillation of secret key and GHZ states from multipartite mixed states

    No full text
We consider two related problems of extracting correlation from a given multipartite mixed quantum state: the first is the distillation of a conference key when the state is shared between a number of legal players and an eavesdropper; the eavesdropper, apart from starting off with this quantum side information, also observes the public communication between the players. The second is the distillation of Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states by means of LOCC from the given mixed state. These problem settings extend our previous paper [FS & AW, IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 68(2):976-988, 2022], and we generalise its results: using a quantum version of the task of communication for omniscience, we derive a novel lower bound on the distillable secret key from any multipartite quantum state by means of a so-called non-interacting communication protocol. Secondly, by making the secret key distillation protocol coherent, we derive novel lower bounds on the distillation rate of GHZ states. Full details in the long version [1]

On the limit cycles of the piecewise differential systems formed by a linear focus or center and a quadratic weak focus or center

While the limit cycles of the discontinuous piecewise differential systems formed by two linear differential systems separated by one straight line have been studied intensively, and up to now there are examples of these systems with at most 3 limit cycles. There are almost no works studying the limit cycles of the discontinuous piecewise differential systems formed by one linear differential system and a quadratic polynomial differential system separated by one straight line. In this paper using the averaging theory up to seven order we prove that the discontinuous piecewise differential systems formed by a linear focus or center and a quadratic weak focus or center separated by one straight line can have 8 limit cycles. More precisely, at every order of the averaging theory from order one to order seven we provide the maximum number of limit cycles that can be obtained using the averaging theory

Since China's economic reform in 1978, people's interest in Spanish poetry has begun to awake and a large number of anthologies of poems have been published. However, female poetry, which has attracted worldwide attention in Spanish poetry creation, was not systematically compiled until 2001 when the translator Zhao Zhenjiang's Anthology of Spanish Female Poetry in the 20th Century was published. This paper focuses on five Spanish poetesses of the 27 Generation included in this collection of poems, and analyzes the principles and techniques used in the process of translatio
