Density estimates on a parabolic spde

    Get PDF
We consider a general class of parabolic spde's [formula] with (t, x) [member of] [0, T]×[0, 1] and [epsilon]Wt,x, [epsilon] > 0, a perturbed Gaussian space-time white noise. For (t, x) [member of] (0, T]×(0, 1) we prove the called Davies and Varadhan-Léandre estimates of the density p[epsilon]t,x of the solution u[epsilon]t,x

Fatou and Korányi-Vági type theorems on the minimal ball

In this paper we develop the Hp (p [greater than or equal] 1) theory on the minimal ball. After identifying the admissible approach regions, we establish theorems of Fatou and Korányi-Vági type on this ball

Magnetostratigraphy of the Miocene continental deposits of the Montes de Castejón (central Ebro basin, Spain): geochronological and paleoenvironmental implications

    Get PDF
A detailed magnetostratigraphic study has been carried out in the early to middle Miocene distal alluvial and lacustrine sediments of the Montes de Castejón (central Ebro Basin). The study was based on the analysis of 196 magnetostratigraphic sites sampled along a stratigraphic interval of about 240 meters. Local magnetostratigraphy yielded a sequence of 12 magnetozones (6 normal and 6 reverse) which could be correlated with the Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale (GPTS) interval C5Cr to C5AD (between 17 and 14.3 Ma.). The sampled sedimentary sequences include the boundary between two tectosedimentary units (TSU, T5 and T6) already defined in the Ebro Basin. The magnetostratigraphy of the Montes de Castejón allows to date the T5/T6 TSU boundary at 16.14 Ma, within chron C5Cn.1n. This magnetostratigraphy also allows us to analyse in detail as well as to discuss the variations in sedimentation rates through space and time between different lacustrine environments: Outer carbonate lacustrine fringes and distal alluvial plains (Montes de Castejón sections) show higher sedimentation rates than offshore lacustrine areas (San Caprasio section, 50 km east of Montes de Castejón)

The decline of natural sciences : confronting diminishing interest, fewer scientists and poorer working conditions in western countries. A comparative analysis between Spain and the United Kingdom

    Get PDF
This study sets out to determine if the interest in and study of natural sciences is declining in western countries as scientists currently contend. Part one demonstrates how survey results reveal a decline of interest in scientific news in the EU. Part two explores the decline of interest further through examining data such as the number of students interested in scientific subjects and scientific careers. We compare data from two different countries: the UK and Spain. Within the study the UK represents the Anglo Saxon culture (traditionally more interested in science) and Spain represents the Latin culture (traditionally less interested). We conclude that in both regions there is a lack of interest in scientific subjects.

Mentoring Entrepreneurial Networks : mapping conceptions of participants in technological-based business incubators in Brazil

    Get PDF
The recent entrepreneurship research agenda includes the analysis of cognitive structures of successful entrepreneurs, revealing an important tool for the examination of an entrepreneurial career. Using techniques of cognitive maps, this study explores the concepts of a successful career and the network itself, as a whole, for career development. Fifty-three entrepreneurs were studied, in seven technological incubators in the city of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. Specifically, this study aimed to map the shared meanings of the incubated entrepreneurs regarding informal support networks. Such networks support the entrepreneurial career and the present study explores the characteristics and the conceptual model that underlies the networks. The data collection was achieved through interviews through a free evocation technique. The shared meanings indicate the existence of inherent thought categories that support network context in the incubator environment, mainly the mentoring networks. The results endorse the interpretation of an informal mentoring model emerging from the dominant evocations concerning a successful career and of the network itself as promoter of career development

Writing as a technology of the self in Kierkegaard and Foucault

    Get PDF
Writing is a very important means by which we can work on ourselves. Yet as a "technology of the self" writing has changed substantially at different times during European history. This essay sketches some of the crucial characteristics of wriring as a technology of the self for Plato's contemporaries, for the early church fathers, and then for Peter Abelard. The changes exemplified in the confessional writing of Abelard became the platform for writing as a technology of the self in European modernism. The characteristics of modernist writing as a technology of the self are examined in some detail in the work of Kierkegaard, particularly with respect to his aesthetic writings and his use of multiple narrative voices.Kierkegaard's uses of writing are compared and contrasted with those of Baudelaire and Foucault.

Semilinear Poisson problems in Sobolev-Besov spaces on Lipschitz domains

Extending recent work for the linear Poisson problem for the Laplacian in the framework of Sobolev-Besov spaces on Lipschitz domains by Jerison and Kenig [16], Fabes, Mendez and Mitrea [9], and Mitrea and Taylor [30], here we take up the task of developing a similar sharp theory for semilinear problems of the type [Delta]u-N(x, u) = F(x), equipped with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions

Do we choose what we look at or it's our brain that chooses? : A cognitive approach to the relation between visual attention and perception based on advertising stimuli

    Get PDF
This study questions whether, when talking about graphical stimuli (and in particular, advertisements), attention is above the surface of consciousness that leads to a voluntary perception of the existing stimuli; or if attention is an involuntary process so that we perceive a selection of the stimuli our brain has previously chosen. Previous research of Cognitive Psychology based on advertising attention and perception documents that our cognitive response directly depends on the level of attention focused on the existing stimuli. To understand this question, we need to determine the parameters governing our level of attention
