    Chern-Simons--Antoniadis-Savvidy forms and standard supergravity

    In the context of the so called the Chern--Simons--Antoniadis--Savvidy (ChSAS) forms, we use the methods for FDA decomposition in 1-forms to construct a four-dimensional ChSAS supergravity action for the Maxwell superalgebra. On the another hand, we use the Extended Cartan Homotopy Formula to find a method that allows the separation of the ChSAS action into bulk and boundary contributions and permits the splitting of the bulk Lagrangian into pieces that reflect the particular subspace structure of the gauge algebra.Comment: 14 page

    Standard General Relativity from Chern-Simons Gravity

    Chern-Simons models for gravity are interesting because they provide with a truly gauge-invariant action principle in the fiber-bundle sense. So far, their main drawback has largely been the perceived remoteness from standard General Relativity, based on the presence of higher powers of the curvature in the Lagrangian (except, remarkably, for three-dimensional spacetime). Here we report on a simple model that suggests a mechanism by which standard General Relativity in five-dimensional spacetime may indeed emerge at a special critical point in the space of couplings, where additional degrees of freedom and corresponding "anomalous" Gauss-Bonnet constraints drop out from the Chern-Simons action. To achieve this result, both the Lie algebra g and the symmetric g-invariant tensor that define the Chern-Simons Lagrangian are constructed by means of the Lie algebra S-expansion method with a suitable finite abelian semigroup S. The results are generalized to arbitrary odd dimensions, and the possible extension to the case of eleven-dimensional supergravity is briefly discussed.Comment: 6 pages, no figures; v2: published versio

    On the rank of the fibers of elliptic K3 surfaces

    Let XX be an elliptic K3 surface endowed with two distinct Jacobian elliptic fibrations πi\pi_i, i=1,2i=1,2, defined over a number field kk. We prove that there is an elliptic curve C⊂XC\subset X such that the generic rank over kk of XX after a base extension by CC is strictly larger than the generic rank of XX. Moreover, if the generic rank of πj\pi_j is positive then there are infinitely many fibers of πi\pi_i (j≠ij\neq i) with rank at least the generic rank of πi\pi_i plus one.Comment: 9 page

    Gender-biased expectations of altruism in adolescents

    Indexación: Scopus.Research suggests that women, but not men, manifest gender-biased expectations of altruism: while women expect other women to be more altruistic, men expect women to be as generous as men. Do adolescents expect women and men to behave differently regarding altruism? I analyse adolescents' gender beliefs about altruism using a modified Dictator Game. Results indicate that adolescents believe that others of same gender are more altruistic than others of the opposite gender. I also found that adolescents' agreement with the existence of different societal roles for men and women moderates the relationship between gender and gender beliefs. Although it was expected that adolescents who agree with different gender roles would expect women to be more generous, surprisingly, the results presented here confirm this only for male adolescents, but in the opposite direction: the more male adolescents agree with the existence of different gender roles, the more they seem to believe that men are more generous than women. Meanwhile, female adolescents believe that women are more altruistic unconditionally. Thus, the previously documented bias seems to be already in place during adolescence, above and beyond other confounding factors.     Flow effects on jet profiles and multiplicities

    We study the effects of low-pTp_T collective flow on radiative energy loss from high-pTp_T partons traversing the QCD medium created in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. We illustrate this idea through three examples. Due to longitudinal flow, jet profiles at the LHC present marked asymmetries in the η×ϕ\eta\times \phi-plane, and widths in η\eta and ϕ\phi of particle distributions associated with a high-pTp_T trigger at RHIC become different.
