A detailed investigation of microbial cell disruption by hydrodynamic cavitation for selective product release

    Get PDF
Includes bibliographical references.Hydrodynamic cavitation is a novel method for microbial cell disruption, mediated by intense pressure fluctuations caused by cavity oscillation and collapse. Selective release of intracellular microbial products is desirable to reduce the cost involved in their downstream processing. A study of the process variables that affect microbial cell disruption by hydrodynamic cavitation is presented in order to ascertain the conditions required for a selective release. Two model systems were considered (yeast and E. coil). Enzymes from different locations of the cell were studied and the release compared with other methods of disruption

A study of working capital management (WCM) is a major importance to internal and external analysis of business. The goal of WCM is to ensure that the company is able to continue its operations and it has sufficient cash flow to satisfy both maturing short-term debt and upcoming operational expenses. Thus, the data were collected from secondary sources mainly from financial report (i.e., financial year from 2003 to 2007) of the selected companies which were published by Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) to analyse the WCM practices in listed manufacturing companies in Sri Lanka. The study used one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) along with necessary ratio analysis (i.e., ratio of inventory conversion period (ICP), debtors' conversion period (DCP), creditors' conversion period (CCP) and cash conversion cycle (CCC)]. The study analysed statistically which reveals that Abans Electricals Limited (ABANS); ACL Cables Limited (ACL); and Lanka Aluminium Industries Limited (LALU) manage their working capital more efficiently than other companies tike ACME Printers and Package Limited (ACME); Associated Electrical Corporation Limited (AEC); BOGALA Graphite Lanka Limited (BOGA); Central Industries Limited (CIND); Ceylon Glass Company PLC Limited (GLAS); Dipped Products PLC Limited (DIPP); and Kelani Cables Limited (KCAB). In addition, operational hypotheses were formulated which publicize that mean ratios of ICP; DCP; CCP and CCC of all companies differ significantly. Hence effective management of inventories in this industry can ensure this growth more rapidly

The formal education is the crucial part of a Student’s educational process. In that way G.C.E O/L is also an important stage for further educational Development. According to the studies, most of the students who sit for G.C.E (O/L) examination are unable to qualify the exam to continue G.C.E (A/L). Although they possess enough qualification to study further, they break down in the mid journey in leering with no hopes and interest on education. There for this research gives opportunity to boost the Students of G.C.E O/L in upgrading towards A/L and promote their achievement through various ways. This study finds the reason why students are unable to get qualified to study A/L even though they spent 11 years in this educational liner period. In this context it is important to understand the role of students, teachers, and parents. It is very important to identify the background of the research area, and the factors influencing on student’s achievement. This research is done thought Survey method. Quantitative and qualitative methodologies are also used. Six Schools from the Batticaloa North division has been selected for sampling. Observation, questionnaire and in-depth interviews are mostly focused, date has been also collected thought written structured questionnaire from Z.D, principle, teachers, students. Secondary date is collected from relevant literature, official documents and administrative reports

Comparative evaluation of Ising couplings, kinetic Ising couplings, and partial correlations in inferring structural connectivity

    Get PDF
The problem of inferring the structural connections from the functional connections obtained from the activity of the neuronal networks is one of the major challenges in neuroscience. Studies suggest that maximum entropy based Ising models can discount the effect of indirect interactions and provide good results in inferring the underlying structural connections in neuronal networks. Parameters of the kinetic formulation of the Ising models, kinetic Ising models, have been found to agree well with anatomical connectivity in in silico models of neuronal networks. Following this, Ising and kinetic Ising models have attracted attention in the area of connectivity studies. However, the performance of the Ising couplings and kinetic Ising couplings have not been evaluated in comparison with other functional con- nectivity metrics in the microscopic scale of neuronal networks for a varied set of network conditions and network structures. This thesis sets out to resolve this through a comparative evaluation of the ability of Ising cou- plings and kinetic Ising couplings to unravel the structural connections when compared to the widely used functional connectivity metrics of partial and cross-correlations in in silico networks. The thesis presents the finding that the network correlation level deter- mines the relative performance of the functional connectivity metrics in de- tecting the synaptic connections. At weak levels of network correlation, Ising couplings and kinetic Ising couplings yielded better performance when com- pared to partial and cross-correlations. Whereas at strong levels of network correlation, partial correlations detected more structural links when com- pared to other functional connectivity metrics in this study. This result was consistent across varying firing rates, network sizes, densities and topologies. Along with being directional and applicable in nonstationary cases, kinetic Ising couplings also displayed better performance when compared to Ising couplings. The findings of this thesis serve as a guide in selecting the right functional connectivity tool to reconstruct the structural connectivity

In the today's knowledge based economy, intellectual capital (IC) is considered as a strategic asset which determines the value of the company. Different practices of disclosing IC information in annual reports that do not show the real financial position of a company, is a main problem in Sri Lankan companies. The objective of this study was to find out the impact of audit committee characteristics on Intellectual Capital Disclosure (ICD) of listed companies on the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) for a period of five- years from 2012/2013 to 2017/2018. The ICD index comprised of 30 items in terms of Relational Capital Disclosure (RCD), Structural Capital Disclosure (SCD) and Human Capital Disclosure (HCD). The data was analyzed using correlations and regression analysis. Most of the Sri Lankan Listed companies disclosed ICD in text, sentences, pictures, tables and graphs in line with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines in their annual reports. ICD was measured by a disclosure index score. The independent variables comprised various forms of audit committee characteristics: audit committee size, frequency of audit committee meetings and audit committee independence. The study confirms that the size of the audit committee and audit committee meetings are important attributes to explain ICD in Sri Lanka. However, the study found a negative significant relationship between ICD and audit committee independence

The Applicability of size-factor and Electron Concent-ration Concepts to Alloying behaviour of Copper

The theory of alloy structures deals with many empi-rical correlations involving valencies, size factors etc. and these were advanced by Hume-Rothery and his collab-orators from a study of alloys of simple metals like copper, silver and gold. Through these correlations have been of much use to the practising metallurgist, no clear meaning can yet be seen in these correlations. Attempts have however been made to put them on a quantitative basis but not with much success. This is probably due to the fact that some of the assumptions on which quanti-tative derivations of the correlations have been made are incorrect besides some of them being inadequate. In addition some, recent experimental findings, have begun to question some of the basic assumptions on, which alloy theory is based. In view of these developments it would be advantageous to reexamine the validity of the principles of alloy theory to assess their applicability to the alloying behaviour of metals. In this paper such an exami-nation is carried out in relation to copper
