    Traffic Forecasting for Pavement Design

    The need for improved traffic estimation procedures has been emphasized by several studies that demonstrated that previously available data were not adequate. Some data were not considered representative of actual traffic conditions because of overloaded trucks avoiding weighing scales and insufficient traffic sampling programs. In addition, previous forecasting procedures did not reflect the increases in legal load limits, the significant increase in the number of heavy trucks, or the shift toward larger vehicle types that has occurred in recent years. Improved estimates of current traffic loadings based on larger samples of much higher quality data would allow development of procedures for making improved estimates of historical traffic loadings and better forecasts of traffic loadings during the design period. The emergence of automatic vehicle classification equipment, permanent and portable weigh-in-motion (WIM) systems, and the application of microprocessors and microcomputers to these data acquisition functions now offer tools that may be used effectively in meeting these needs. Representatives from four States (Florida, Kentucky, Oregon, and Washington) met on several occasions to discuss the subject of traffic forecasting for pavement design. Information was compiled on all aspects of the traffic forecasting process, options were presented for each step of the process, and recommendations were developed to assist highway agencies in improving current practices and procedures

    REMPI Spectroscopy of HfF

    The spectrum of electronic states at 30000--33000 cm−1^{-1} in hafnium fluoride has been studied using (1+1) resonance-enhanced multi-photon ionization (REMPI) and (1+1â€Č') REMPI. Six Ωâ€Č=3/2\Omega' = 3/2 and ten Π1/2\Pi_{1/2} vibronic bands have been characterized. We report the molecular constants for these bands and estimate the electronic energies of the excited states using a correction derived from the observed isotope shifts. When either of two closely spaced Π1/2\Pi_{1/2} electronic states is used as an intermediate state to access autoionizing Rydberg levels, qualitatively distinct autoionization spectra are observed. The intermediate state-specificity of the autoionization spectra bodes well for the possibility of using a selected Π1/2\Pi_{1/2} state as an intermediate state to create ionic HfF+^+ in various selected quantum states, an important requirement for our electron electric dipole moment (eEDM) search in HfF+^+.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 1 tabl

    SILAC Analysis Reveals Increased Secretion of Hemostasis-Related Factors by Senescent Cells

    Cellular senescence irreversibly arrests cell proliferation, accompanied by a multi-component senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) that participates in several age-related diseases. Using stable isotope labeling with amino acids (SILACs) and cultured cells, we identify 343 SASP proteins that senescent human fibroblasts secrete at 2-fold or higher levels compared with quiescent cell counterparts. Bioinformatic analysis reveals that 44 of these proteins participate in hemostasis, a process not previously linked with cellular senescence. We validated the expression of some of these SASP factors in cultured cells and in vivo. Mice treated with the chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin, which induces widespread cellular senescence in vivo, show increased blood clotting. Conversely, selective removal of senescent cells using transgenic p16-3MR mice showed that clearing senescent cells attenuates the increased clotting caused by doxorubicin. Our study provides an in-depth, unbiased analysis of the SASP and unveils a function for cellular senescence in hemostasis

    On the predicaments of the English L1 language learner: a conceptual article

    The unparalleled rise of English has led native speakers (L1) to becoming increasingly outnumbered by L2 speakers; English as global commodity has stimulated much research into the learning and teaching of English. Meanwhile, fewer and fewer L1 English speakers are choosing to learn languages; a phenomenon which has received less attention. This article investigates both phenomena in the light of two recent theoretical developments in Applied Linguistics and second language acquisition (SLA), namely dynamic system theory and the multilingual turn in SLA, scrutinising the effects of the re-positioning of L1 English language learners. The conclusion suggests a conceptualisation of this learner group alongside, and yet very different to, other linguistically disadvantaged group. Pedagogical pathways to best support this learner group are also discussed

    Mutation in utp15 Disrupts Vascular Patterning in a p53-Dependent Manner in Zebrafish Embryos

    Angiogenesis is the process by which the highly branched and functional vasculature arises from the major vessels, providing developing tissues with nutrients, oxygen, and removing metabolic waste. During embryogenesis, vascular patterning is dependent on a tightly regulated balance between pro- and anti-angiogenic signals, and failure of angiogenesis leads to embryonic lethality. Using the zebrafish as a model organism, we sought to identify genes that influence normal vascular patterning.In a forward genetic screen, we identified mutant LA1908, which manifests massive apoptosis during early embryogenesis, abnormal expression of several markers of arterial-venous specification, delayed angiogenic sprouting of the intersegmental vessels (ISV), and malformation of the caudal vein plexus (CVP), indicating a critical role for LA1908 in cell survival and angiogenesis. Genetic mapping and sequencing identified a G to A transition in the splice site preceding exon 11 of utp15 in LA1908 mutant embryos. Overexpression of wild type utp15 mRNA suppresses all observed mutant phenotypes, demonstrating a causative relationship between utp15 and LA1908. Furthermore, we found that injecting morpholino oligonucleotides inhibiting p53 translation prevents cell death and rescues the vascular abnormalities, indicating that p53 is downstream of Utp15 deficiency in mediating the LA1908 phenotypes.Taken together, our data demonstrate an early embryonic effect of Utp15 deficiency on cell survival and the normal patterning of the vasculature and highlight an anti-angiogenic role of p53 in developing embryos

    Medial gastrocnemius specific force of adult men with spastic cerebral palsy

    Introduction: Muscle weakness determines functional impairment in spastic cerebral palsy (SCP). Measurement of specific force (SF) allows for strength comparison with unimpaired populations (controls) accounting for neural (activation and coactivation), architectural (fascicle length and pennation angle), and structural differences (moment arm length). Methods. Medial gastrocnemius (MG) SF (and its determinants) was assessed in both paretic and non-paretic legs of 11 men with SCP and 11 age-matched controls during plantarflexion maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC). Results. SCP fascicles were 28% longer than controls (P<0.05). Pennation angle of SCP was 41% smaller than controls. The PCSA of SCP MG was 47% smaller than controls (P<0.05).     Molecular mechanisms of cell death: recommendations of the Nomenclature Committee on Cell Death 2018.

    Over the past decade, the Nomenclature Committee on Cell Death (NCCD) has formulated guidelines for the definition and interpretation of cell death from morphological, biochemical, and functional perspectives. Since the field continues to expand and novel mechanisms that orchestrate multiple cell death pathways are unveiled, we propose an updated classification of cell death subroutines focusing on mechanistic and essential (as opposed to correlative and dispensable) aspects of the process. As we provide molecularly oriented definitions of terms including intrinsic apoptosis, extrinsic apoptosis, mitochondrial permeability transition (MPT)-driven necrosis, necroptosis, ferroptosis, pyroptosis, parthanatos, entotic cell death, NETotic cell death, lysosome-dependent cell death, autophagy-dependent cell death, immunogenic cell death, cellular senescence, and mitotic catastrophe, we discuss the utility of neologisms that refer to highly specialized instances of these processes. The mission of the NCCD is to provide a widely accepted nomenclature on cell death in support of the continued development of the field
