    Bioreduction of chromium (VI) to chromium (III) by a novel yeast strain Rhodotorula mucilaginosa (MTCC 9315)

    Introduction of heavy metal compounds like chromium, lead, arsenic and mercury into the environment generally induces morphological and physiological changes in the microbial communities hence exerting a selective pressure on the microorganisms. Generally, sites which are contaminated with heavy metals are the sources of metal resistant microorganisms. This paper describes the bioreduction of Cr6+ to Cr3+ by a novel strain Rhodotorula mucilaginosa (MTCC 9315). The yeast is very efficient in Cr6+ reduction. It is shown that the reduction of Cr6+ to Cr3+ species occurs extracellularly by analyzing the supernatant of the yeast extract peptone sucrose medium (YEPS) thus supporting the assumption about the existence of an extra-cellular pathway of Cr6+ reduction. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that R. mucilaginosa cells are salt tolerant. It is thus suggested that isolated yeast biomass can be used as sources of Cr6+ reducer, and the resin formulated in the present study may be used as biofilter to filter out Cr6+ ions.     Prescription pattern of antibiotics in respiratory disorders in a tertiary care teaching hospital in Eastern part of India

    Background: Respiratory infections are increasing globally with parallel increase in world population, pollution, urbanization, overcrowding, global warming and poverty. Multi drug resistant virulent bacteria are growing very rapidly. The objective of this study was to know the prescribing pattern of antibiotics in hospitalized patients suffering from different common respiratory disorders.Methods: This was a retrospective and observational study. Data was captured from 1st January 2016 to 31st December 2016 at ICARE Institute of Medical Sciences and Research and Dr. B.C.Roy Hospital. Total 200 patients were taken for the study of age range from 10 to 50 years.Results: COPD, bronchial asthma, pneumonia and ARIs were the most frequent respiratory illnesses among patients attended Medicine OPD. Most common antibiotics prescribed were co-amoxyclav, ceftriaxone, moxifloxacin, clarithromycin, azithromycin and aminoglycosides.Conclusions: Injudicious use of antibiotics in trivial viral respiratory infections may give rise to antibiotic resistant strains in the community

    BIOCONVERSION OF WATER HYACINTH HYDROLYSATE INTO ETHANOL

    The fast growing aquatic weed water hyacinth, which is available almost year-round in the tropics and subtropics, was utilized as the chief source of cellulose for production of fuel ethanol via enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation. Fungal cellulases produced on-site by utilizing acid-alkali pretreated water hyacinth as the substrate were used as the crude enzyme source for hydrolysis of identically pretreated biomass. Four different modes of enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation were trialed in the present study for optimization of the yield of ethanol. Two common yeasts viz., Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Pachysolen tannophilus, were used for fermentation of hexose and pentose sugars in the hydrolysate. Significant enhancement of concentration (8.3 g/L) and yield (0.21 g/g) of ethanol was obtained through a prefermentation hydrolysis-simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (PH-SSF) process, over the other three processes viz., separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF), simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF), and single batch bioconversion (SBB) by utilizing fungal culture broth with and without filtration as crude enzyme source

    Random Matrix Theories in Quantum Physics: Common Concepts

    We review the development of random-matrix theory (RMT) during the last decade. We emphasize both the theoretical aspects, and the application of the theory to a number of fields. These comprise chaotic and disordered systems, the localization problem, many-body quantum systems, the Calogero-Sutherland model, chiral symmetry breaking in QCD, and quantum gravity in two dimensions. The review is preceded by a brief historical survey of the developments of RMT and of localization theory since their inception. We emphasize the concepts common to the above-mentioned fields as well as the great diversity of RMT. In view of the universality of RMT, we suggest that the current development signals the emergence of a new "statistical mechanics": Stochasticity and general symmetry requirements lead to universal laws not based on dynamical principles.Comment: 178 pages, Revtex, 45 figures, submitted to Physics Report

    Mapping local patterns of childhood overweight and wasting in low- and middle-income countries between 2000 and 2017

    A double burden of malnutrition occurs when individuals, household members or communities experience both undernutrition and overweight. Here, we show geospatial estimates of overweight and wasting prevalence among children under 5 years of age in 105 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) from 2000 to 2017 and aggregate these to policy-relevant administrative units. Wasting decreased overall across LMICs between 2000 and 2017, from 8.4% (62.3 (55.1–70.8) million) to 6.4% (58.3 (47.6–70.7) million), but is predicted to remain above the World Health Organization’s Global Nutrition Target of <5% in over half of LMICs by 2025. Prevalence of overweight increased from 5.2% (30 (22.8–38.5) million) in 2000 to 6.0% (55.5 (44.8–67.9) million) children aged under 5 years in 2017. Areas most affected by double burden of malnutrition were located in Indonesia, Thailand, southeastern China, Botswana, Cameroon and central Nigeria. Our estimates provide a new perspective to researchers, policy makers and public health agencies in their efforts to address this global childhood syndemic

    Broadband multi-wavelength properties of M87 during the 2017 Event Horizon Telescope campaign

    In 2017, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Collaboration succeeded in capturing the first direct image of the center of the M87 galaxy. The asymmetric ring morphology and size are consistent with theoretical expectations for a weakly accreting supermassive black hole of mass ∼6.5 × 109Me. The EHTC also partnered with several international facilities in space and on the ground, to arrange an extensive, quasi-simultaneous multi-wavelength campaign. This Letter presents the results and analysis of this campaign, as well as the multi-wavelength data as a legacy data repository. We captured M87 in a historically low state, and the core flux dominates over HST-1 at high energies, making it possible to combine core flux constraints with the more spatially precise very long baseline interferometry data. We present the most complete simultaneous multi-wavelength spectrum of the active nucleus to date, and discuss the complexity and caveats of combining data from different spatial scales into one broadband spectrum. We apply two heuristic, isotropic leptonic single-zone models to provide insight into the basic source properties, but conclude that a structured jet is necessary to explain M87’s spectrum. We can exclude that the simultaneous γ-ray emission is produced via inverse Compton emission in the same region producing the EHT mm-band emission, and further conclude that the γ-rays can only be produced in the inner jets (inward of HST-1) if there are strongly particle-dominated regions. Direct synchrotron emission from accelerated protons and secondaries cannot yet be excluded.http://iopscience.iop.org/2041-8205am2022Physic

    Mapping inequalities in exclusive breastfeeding in low- and middle-income countries, 2000–2018

    Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF)—giving infants only breast-milk for the first 6 months of life—is a component of optimal breastfeeding practices effective in preventing child morbidity and mortality. EBF practices are known to vary by population and comparable subnational estimates of prevalence and progress across low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are required for planning policy and interventions. Here we present a geospatial analysis of EBF prevalence estimates from 2000 to 2018 across 94 LMICs mapped to policy-relevant administrative units (for example, districts), quantify subnational inequalities and their changes over time, and estimate probabilities of meeting the World Health Organization’s Global Nutrition Target (WHO GNT) of ≥70% EBF prevalence by 2030. While six LMICs are projected to meet the WHO GNT of ≥70% EBF prevalence at a national scale, only three are predicted to meet the target in all their district-level units by 2030
