NEARBY Platform: Algorithm for Automated Asteroids Detection in Astronomical Images
In the past two decades an increasing interest in discovering Near Earth
Objects has been noted in the astronomical community. Dedicated surveys have
been operated for data acquisition and processing, resulting in the present
discovery of over 18.000 objects that are closer than 30 million miles of
Earth. Nevertheless, recent events have shown that there still are many
undiscovered asteroids that can be on collision course to Earth. This article
presents an original NEO detection algorithm developed in the NEARBY research
object, that has been integrated into an automated MOPS processing pipeline
aimed at identifying moving space objects based on the blink method. Proposed
solution can be considered an approach of Big Data processing and analysis,
implementing visual analytics techniques for rapid human data validation.Comment: IEEE 14th International Conference on Intelligent Computer

Registered Replication Report: Rand, Greene & Nowak(2012)
In an anonymous 4-person economic game, participants contributed more money to a common project (i.e., cooperated) when required to decide quickly than when forced to delay their decision (Rand, Greene & Nowak, 2012), a pattern consistent with the “social heuristics” hypothesis proposed by Rand and colleagues. The results of studies using time pressure have been mixed, with some replication attempts observing similar patterns (e.g., Rand et al., 2014) and others observing null effects (e.g., Tinghög et al., 2013, Verkoeijen et al., 2014). This Registered Replication Report (RRR) assessed the size and variability of the effect of time pressure on cooperative decisions by combining 21 separate, pre-registered replications of the critical conditions from Study 7 of the original paper (Rand et al., 2012). The primary planned analysis used data from all participants who were randomly assigned to conditions and who met the protocol inclusion criteria (an intent-to-treat approach that included the 65.9% of participants in the Time Pressure condition and 7.5% in the Forced Delay condition who did not adhere to the time constraints), and observed a difference in contributions of -0.37 percentage points, compared to an 8.6 percentage point difference calculated from the original data. Analyzing the data as the original paper did, including data only for participants who complied with the time constraints, the RRR observed a 10.37 percentage point difference in contributions compared to a 15.31 percentage point difference in the original study. In combination, the results of the intent-to-treat analysis and the compliant-only analysis are consistent with the presence of selection biases and the absence of a causal effect of time pressure on cooperatio
Late-Onset Anterior Dislocation of a Posterior Chamber Intraocular Lens in a Patient with Pseudoexfoliation Syndrome
Here, we report on a patient with pseudoexfoliation syndrome who developed acute angle-closure glaucoma with a marked myopic shift due to anterior dislocation of the posterior chamber intraocular lens almost 16 months after an uneventful phacoemulsification. Examination with a Scheimpflug camera was extremely useful in confirming the diagnosis. This is the fist case of late-onset angle-closure glaucoma with a significant myopic shift due to anterior dislocation of the posterior chamber intraocular lens, which resulted in a permanent alteration of the postoperative target refraction
Copolymer adsorption kinetics at a selective liquid-liquid interface: Scaling theory and computer experiment
We consider the adsorption kinetics of a regular block-copolymer of total
length and block size at a selective liquid-liquid interface in the
limit of strong localization. We propose a simple analytic theory based on
scaling considerations which describes the relaxation of the initial coil into
a flat-shaped layer. The characteristic times for attaining equilibrium values
of the gyration radius components perpendicular and parallel to the interface
are predicted to scale with chain length and block length as
(here is the Flory exponent)
and as , although initially the rate of coil
flattening is expected to decrease with block size as . Since
typically for multiblock copolymers, our results suggest that the
flattening dynamics proceeds faster perpendicular rather than parallel to the
interface. We also demonstrate that these scaling predictions agree well with
the results of extensive Monte Carlo simulations of the localization dynamics.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submited to Europhys. Let
Prvi nalaz stepskog guža Dolichophis caspius (Gmelin, 1789), (Reptilia: Colubridae) na otoku Olibu, Hrvatska
During a field study within the framework of a joint Croatian-Hungarian project on the small northern Dalmatian island of Olib, the large whip snake Dolichophis caspius (Gmelin, 1789) was observed and photographed at several localities. Though this is not the first island record of this species in Croatia, as it was previously found on the islands of Lastovo, Kopište and Mrčara, this finding is surprising due to the great distance from the other known localities of its distribution range.U okviru zajedničkog hrvatsko-mađarskog projekta tijekom terenskih istraživanja na malom sjevernodalmatinskom otoku Olibu, na nekoliko lokaliteta uočen je i fotografiran stepski guž Dolichophis caspius (Gmelin, 1789). Iako to nije prvi otočni nalaz ove vrste u Hrvatskoj (pronađen je i na otocima Lastovu, Kopištu i Mrčari) iznenađujući je stoga što je jako udaljen od drugih dosad poznatih nalazišta
Topological charges and the genus of surfaces
We show that the topological charge of the n-soliton solution of the
sine-Gordon equation n is related to the genus g > 1 of a constant negative
curvature compact surface described by this configuration. The relation is
n=2(g-1), where n is even. The moduli space of complex dimension B(g)=3(g-1)
corresponds precisely to the freedom to choosing the configuration with n
solitons of arbitrary positions and velocities. We speculate also that the odd
soliton states will describe the unoriented surfaces.Comment: 8 pages, Latex. To be published in Journal of Geommetry and Physic
Area Potentials and Deformation Quantization
Systems built out of N-body interactions, beyond 2-body interactions, are
formulated on the plane, and investigated classically and quantum mechanically
(in phase space). Their Wigner Functions--the density matrices in phase-space
quantization--are given and analyzed.Comment: LaTeX, 7 page
