    Influence of Carbon Concentration on the Superconductivity in MgCxNi3

    The influence of carbon concentration on the superconductivity (SC) in MgCx_{x}Ni3_3 has been investigated by measuring the low temperature specific heat combined with first principles electronic structure calculation. It is found that the specific heat coefficient γn=Cen/T\gamma_n=C_{en}/T of the superconducting sample (x1x\approx1) in normal state is twice that of the non-superconducting one (x0.85x\approx 0.85). The comparison of measured γn\gamma_n and the calculated electronic density of states (DOS) shows that the effective mass renormalization changes remarkably as the carbon concentration changes. The large mass renormalization for the superconducting sample and the low TcT_{c}(7K) indicate that more than one kind of boson mediated electron-electron interactions exist in MgCx_{x}Ni3_3.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Brane-Antibrane Inflation in Orbifold and Orientifold Models

    We analyse the cosmological implications of brane-antibrane systems in string-theoretic orbifold and orientifold models. In a class of realistic models, consistency conditions require branes and antibranes to be stuck at different fixed points, and so their mutual attraction generates a potential for one of the radii of the underlying torus or the 4D string dilaton. Assuming that all other moduli have been fixed by string effects, we find that this potential leads naturally to a period of cosmic inflation with the radion or dilaton field as the inflaton. The slow-roll conditions are satisfied more generically than if the branes were free to move within the space. The appearance of tachyon fields at certain points in moduli space indicates the onset of phase transitions to different non-BPS brane systems, providing ways of ending inflation and reheating the corresponding observable brane universe. In each case we find relations between the inflationary parameters and the string scale to get the correct spectrum of density perturbations. In some examples the small numbers required as inputs are no smaller than 0.01, and are the same small quantities which are required to explain the gauge hierarchy.Comment: 30 pages, 2 figures.     Nernst effect of iron pnictide and cuprate superconductors: signatures of spin density wave and stripe order

    The Nernst effect has recently proven a sensitive probe for detecting unusual normal state properties of unconventional superconductors. In particular, it may sensitively detect Fermi surface reconstructions which are connected to a charge or spin density wave (SDW) ordered state, and even fluctuating forms of such a state. Here we summarize recent results for the Nernst effect of the iron pnictide superconductor LaO1xFxFeAs\rm LaO_{1-x}F_xFeAs, whose ground state evolves upon doping from an itinerant SDW to a superconducting state, and the cuprate superconductor La1.8xEu0.2SrxCuO4\rm La_{1.8-x}Eu_{0.2}Sr_xCuO_4 which exhibits static stripe order as a ground state competing with the superconductivity. In LaO1xFxFeAs\rm LaO_{1-x}F_xFeAs, the SDW order leads to a huge Nernst response, which allows to detect even fluctuating SDW precursors at superconducting doping levels where long range SDW order is suppressed. This is in contrast to the impact of stripe order on the normal state Nernst effect in La1.8xEu0.2SrxCuO4\rm La_{1.8-x}Eu_{0.2}Sr_xCuO_4. Here, though signatures of the stripe order are detectable in the temperature dependence of the Nernst coefficient, its overall temperature dependence is very similar to that of La2xSrxCuO4\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4, where stripe order is absent. The anomalies which are induced by the stripe order are very subtle and the enhancement of the Nernst response due to static stripe order in La1.8xEu0.2SrxCuO4\rm La_{1.8-x}Eu_{0.2}Sr_xCuO_4 as compared to that of the pseudogap phase in La2xSrxCuO4\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4, if any, is very small.Comment: To appear in: 'Properties and applications of thermoelectric materials - II', V.     Active thermal mass enhancement using phase change materials

    Buildings account for around 40% of energy consumption in the UK. For over twenty years active thermal mass systems have been a feature in low-energy buildings in northern Europe. By passing ventilation air, and utilising night ventilation, through the hollow core structures efficient heating and cooling has been achieved. Despite the success, such systems suffer from space overheating and efficiency losses during extended hot periods. Control strategies have largely mitigated this effect however low cost retrofit solutions that enhance the system are of interest. This research therefore investigates the benefit of using innovative phase change material (PCM) solutions to enhance thermal comfort and reduced energy usage of traditional active thermal mass systems. A prototype PCM enhancement was constructed, with energy saving and comfort benefits investigated under controlled laboratory conditions. In absolute terms the PCM solution offered an additional 12.5% energy storage capacity and a 29% increase in active surface area, coupled with the existing sensible thermal mass. Under laboratory conditions the PCM addition saved an additional 0.1 kWh per day, delayed AC onset by 1.2 h and offered an average 1.0 °C reduction in room temperature during 8 h of fixed internal heat gain, contrasted against the original active thermal mass system

    Spin stiffness and quantum fluctuations in C-type and A-type antiferromagnets

    We present a systematic study of quantum fluctuations in the C-type and A-type antiferromagnetic (AF) phases in cubic lattices and in bilayer systems. Using the linear spin-wave theory, we show that the spin stiffness and the quantum corrections to the order parameter and energy obtained for C-AF and A-AF phases decrease with the increasing number of ferromagnetic bonds. Therefore, the quantum spin effects in LaMnO_3 and in LaVO_3 are rather small, suggesting the magnetic moments of 3.91 and 1.89 Bohr's magneton, respectively. They cannot explain the strong reduction of the magnetic order parameter observed in cubic vanadates.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Measurement of the Bottom-Strange Meson Mixing Phase in the Full CDF Data Set

    We report a measurement of the bottom-strange meson mixing phase \beta_s using the time evolution of B0_s -> J/\psi (->\mu+\mu-) \phi (-> K+ K-) decays in which the quark-flavor content of the bottom-strange meson is identified at production. This measurement uses the full data set of proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt(s)= 1.96 TeV collected by the Collider Detector experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to 9.6 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of \beta_s and the B0_s decay-width difference \Delta\Gamma_s, and measure \beta_s in [-\pi/2, -1.51] U [-0.06, 0.30] U [1.26, \pi/2] at the 68% confidence level, in agreement with the standard model expectation. Assuming the standard model value of \beta_s, we also determine \Delta\Gamma_s = 0.068 +- 0.026 (stat) +- 0.009 (syst) ps-1 and the mean B0_s lifetime, \tau_s = 1.528 +- 0.019 (stat) +- 0.009 (syst) ps, which are consistent and competitive with determinations by other experiments.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, Phys.     Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results

    Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp. Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Physics Letters B.
