Bias-Free Estimation in Multicomponent Maximum Likelihood Fits with Component-Dependent Templates

    Get PDF
The possibility of strong biases in a multicomponent Maximum Likelihood fits with component-dependent templates has been demonstrated in some toy problems. We discuss here in detail a problem of practical interest, particle identification based on time-of-flight or dE/dx information. We show that large biases can occur in estimating particle fractions in a sample if differences between the momentum spectra of particles are ignored, and we present a more robust fit technique, allowing bias-free estimation even when the particle spectra in the sample are unknown.Comment: May 2006, 4 pages, 6 figures To appear in the proceedings of PHYSTATO5: Statistical Problems in Particle Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology, Oxford, England, United Kingdom, 12-15 Sep 200

Measurement of the Masses and Lifetimes of B Hadrons at the Tevatron

The latest results for the B Hadron sector at the Tevatron Collider are summarized. The properties of B Hadrons can be precisely measured at the Tevatron. In particularly we will focus on the masses and lifetimes. The new Tevatron results for the CP violation in B Hadrons will be also discussed.Comment: Proceedings of the 40th Rancontres de Moriond QCD and High Energies Hadronic Interactions 2006, 4 pages, 3 figure

Un errare significativo nella tradizione di Genesi 47:5-6

In this article the text of Genesis 47:5-6 is examined. In relation to the MT, the LXX presents a longer text which, in its earliest hebrew form (which can well be reconstructed), shows the characteristics of a banal mechanical polygenetic error (saut du méme au mem,) taking place at a particular moment of the transmission. The final form of the MT is shown as the result of an attempt of correcting the error; nevertheless, such attempt is rough · and comes to determine an error this time nonpolygenetic, meaningful from the point of view of the genealogical relationships among the witnesses: the LXX testifies the original while the text of the tradition of the verse constitutes an independent branch deriving f rom the subarchetypc ('I') which bears the significant error.

    Electroweak Physics at the Tevatron

    Get PDF
We discuss recent results in the electroweak sector at the Tevatron. We will focus on latest results in the measurement of diboson production cross sections and limits on anomalous triple gauge coupling. At first, we will consider purely leptonic decays. Then, we will describe the recent observations of diboson processes with jets in the final state

A Statistical Prescription to Estimate Properly Normalized Distributions of Different Particle Species

We describe a statistical method to avoid biased estimation of the content of different particle species. We consider the case when the particle identification information strongly depends on some kinematical variables, whose distributions are unknown and different for each particles species. We show that the proposed procedure provides properly normalized and completely data-driven estimation of the unknown distributions without any a priori assumption on their functional form. Moreover, we demonstrate that the method can be generalized to any kinematical distribution of the particles

    Fisiognomica a Qumran: a proposito di 4Q186

In a previous study, the Author singled out physiognomonic practice by Essenes according to Flavius Josephus' source in Ant II, 119-161. In this article, the research is extended to the Qumranic manuscript 4Q186, a parchment carrying a text whose content is manifestly physiognomonic. In consequence of a comparison between this text and the so-called Two Spirits Treatise of 1QS, the Author argues that the expression רוח לו, utilised in 4Q186, points out the "typology" of the spirit of the individuals that are considered in this text.

The GALILEO GALILEI small-satellite mission with FEEP thrusters (GG)

The Equivalence Principle, formulated by Einstein generalizing Galileo’s and Newton’s work, is a fundamental principle of modern physics. As such it should be tested as accurately as possible. Its most direct consequence, namely the Universality of Free Fall, can be tested in space, in a low Earth orbit, the crucial advantage being that the driving signal is about three orders of magnitude stronger than on Earth. GALILEO GALILEI (GG) is a small space mission designed for such a high-accuracy test. At the time of print, GG has been selected by ASI (Agenzia Spaziale Italiana) as a candidate for the next small Italian mission. Ground tests of the proposed apparatus now indicate that an accuracy of 1 part in 1017 is within the reach of this small mission
