Field quality analysis to monitor the industrial series production of the dipole magnets for the Large Hadron Collider

In superconducting accelerator magnets, the field quality is mainly determined by conductor position inside the coil. For the LHC, the dipolar field homogeneity must be assured up to 10-5 of the main field component, imposing strict manufacturing tolerances. Magnetic measurements at room temperature provide a fast and economical way to find out assembly errors or the use of faulty components. In order to compute control bounds for the industrial series production, the magnetic measurements performed at room temperature on 27 pre-series collared coils have been statistically analyzed in this work. An automatic tool has been implemented to single out anomalous values of the magnetic field in the measurements. Such cases have been analyzed using a magnetostatic code to work out errors in the manufacturing process and the possible cures

When I began thinking about starting my honors project, I came up with several ideas but the one that interested me most was the making of a tailored garment. My major is home economics so I thought this would be a good experience for me and a good time to learn something new. I liked the idea that I could work on my own and at my own speed, and could make appointments with Mrs. Elledge when convenient for both of us. I have made garments before but I\u27ve never taken on such a large project or as detailed as this one. In one of the most astonishing assessments of the world food situations yet delivered, five scientists told the House Subcommittee on Fisheries and Wildlife Conservation and the Environment that the World Food Conference had failed to come to grips with the underlying causes of the present food crisis. They declared that the United States had already begun a policy of triage, deciding which people shall live and which shall starve on the basis of political considerations. University of Wisconsin ecologist Grant Cottam, said that the delegates had failed to face the possibility that the world\u27s carrying capacity may have already been exceeded. In recent year, he explains, we have managed to survive without serious famine only because of the presence of large food reserve ... with no reserves left, there is no way we can avoid massive famines. The earth simply cannot continue to support an exponential population growth. He estimates the food shortage this year will be equal to the needs of 130 million people

Pauletta Hansel Poetry Reading

Poet Pauletta Hansel reads from her newest collection of poems, Tangle, just out from Wind Publications. Tangle is a rich and resonant exploration of interwoven connections: family, marriage, community, writing and place, and of the tangled relationships among the living and their dead. The neutron-deutron breakup cross section between 8 and 22 MeV

The n-d breakup cross section has been measured at eleven energies. between 8 and 22 MeV by integrating the energy distributions of breakup protons in a deuterated scintillator. The breakup protons were separated from the recoil deuterons by pulse shape discrimination. A comparison of these measurements with recent calculations favours those performed with local potentials

K-6 Classroom Teachers\u27 Perceptions of Effective Teacher Education Programs.

The demands placed upon stakeholders of the public education system have become more and more compelling with each passing year. With the success of schools and students at stake, it is imperative to examine multiple facets of the public education structure. One of the most important aspects of this process is the development of preservice teachers entering the classroom. This study initially chronicled the history of teacher education and state licensure. Subsequently, standards enforced by the Tennessee Department of Education and National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education were also explored to gain information about the guidelines and criteria required for accrediting teacher education and licensure programs. Further information in regard to teacher education was examined through current trends and issues that affect classroom teachers. The teacher education program criteria from 6 Tennessee higher education institutions were also reviewed. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the perceptions of classroom teachers about effective higher education programs. Twelve K-6 classroom teachers with 5 or fewer years of teaching experience were interviewed to gain insight about the opinions of effective components of teacher education programs. This information was examined to explore specific program requirements. The analysis of the data collected in this study introduced several themes and common patterns. Most commonly, participants expressed the importance of a substantial field experience within the teacher education program. The value of relating content and theoretical approach to the practical application of the classroom was also noted as a priority. Participants reported the most effective teacher education programs as those that formulated a realistic portrayal of the classroom setting. These responses illustrated the significance of a hands-on approach to teacher education training and development

Characteristics of Millenium Minority Students and Their Student Organization Involvement

The climates of many colleges and universities are changing to accommodate the needs of the millennium student. For African American students who enroll in predominantly white institutions, the need for programming to alleviate the concerns of non majority students is still a factor in leading students to greater rates of retention. Peer mentoring programs are coordinated to assist in student adjustment to campus as well as the establishment of connections with their campus. Student organizations have also been key in helping students become comfortable within their new environments. For the Minority Advisement Program(MAP), at a Southeastern University, student participants show evidence of belonging to the millennium generation and also show signs of high levels of involvement. The types of organizations that student participants of MAP are engaging in are special interest groups and those that focus on leadership development. The information provided within this body of research, indicates that students are generally interested in becoming involved in areas that promote positive student development
