    Study of the ZZ diboson production at CDF II

    The subject of this Thesis is the production of a pair of massive Z vector bosons in the proton antiproton collisions at the Tevatron, at the center-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. We measure the ZZ production cross section in two different leptonic decay modes: into four charged leptons (e or mu) and into two charged leptons plus two neutrinos. The results are based on the whole dataset collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF), corresponding to 9.7 fb−1 of data. The combination of the two cross section measurements gives (pp->ZZ) = 1.38+0.28−0.27 pb, and is the most precise ZZ cross section measurement at the Tevatron to date. We further investigate the four lepton final state searching for the production of the scalar Higgs particle in the decay H ->ZZ(*)->lll'l'. No evidence of its production has been seen in the data, hence was set a 95% Confidence Level upper limit on its production cross section as a function of the Higgs particle mass, mH, in the range from 120 to 300 GeV/c2

    Use of Theory to Guide Integration of Virtual Reality Technology in Nursing Education: A Scoping Study

    Background: There is growing interest among academic nurse educators in using virtual reality (VR) environments as a pedagogical tool to enhance student learning. Purpose: The aim of this scoping study was to identify the theories or conceptual models that informed the application of virtual reality technology in nursing education programs. Methods: A scoping study using the Arksey and O\u27Malley (2005) framework was conducted. A search strategy recommended and executed by a research librarian yielded 18 final articles for review. Findings: There is limited use of theory or a conceptual model, particularly of nursing origin, to guide the integration of VR technology for student learning. Discussion: More research is needed to define best practices for application of VR technology for specific curricular needs, and for theory development based on specific concepts and disciplinary perspectives of learning

    The present essay aims to map the transnational Coca-Cola’s history and its growing consolidation inside capitalism’s development, analyzing the marketing strategies made by the brand and evidencing how it was essential for the image construction of Coca-Cola, because besides the environmental scandals, endeavors against the public health system and manipulating scientific articles which could damage them, the brand still one of the most valuable in the global marketing and one of the most consumed. To explain such phenomenon, we explore the concept of artistic capitalism by Lipovetsky and Serroy (2005) and liberation through consumption brought by Boltanski and Chiapello (2009), clarifying that the real selling product of Coca-Cola goes beyond simple sugar drinking.O presente ensaio visa traçar o histórico da transnacional Coca-Cola e sua crescente consolidação dentro do desenvolvimento do capitalismo, analisando as estratégias de marketing feitas pelas propagandas da marca e evidenciando a forma como esta propicia um ideário em volta de seu produto. É possível perceber como o papel da propaganda foi essencial para a construção da imagem da Coca-Cola, pois apesar dos escândalos ambientais, empreitadas contra o setor de saúde pública e manipulação de artigos científicos que pudessem prejudicá-la, a marca continua sendo uma das mais valiosas do mercado mundial e uma das mais consumidas. Para explicarmos tal fenômeno, abordamos o conceito de capitalismo artista de Lipovetsky e Serroy (2005) e a libertação pelo consumo apontado por Boltanski e Chiapello (2009), clarificando que o real produto vendido pela Coca-Cola vai além de um simples refrigerante

    Insect herbivory (Choristoneura fumiferana, Tortricidea) underlies tree population structure (Picea glauca, Pinaceae)

    Variation in insect herbivory can lead to population structure in plant hosts as indicated by defence traits. In annual herbaceous, defence traits may vary between geographic areas but evidence of such patterns is lacking for long-lived species. This may result from the variety of selection pressures from herbivores, long distance gene flow, genome properties, and lack of research. We investigated the antagonistic interaction between white spruce (Picea glauca) and spruce budworm (SBW, Choristoneura fumiferana) the most devastating forest insect of eastern North America in common garden experiments. White spruces that are able to resist SBW attack were reported to accumulate the acetophenones piceol and pungenol constitutively in their foliage. We show that levels of these acetophenones and transcripts of the gene responsible for their release is highly heritable and that their accumulation is synchronized with the most devastating stage of SBW. Piceol and pungenol concentrations negatively correlate with rate of development in female SBW and follow a non-random geographic variation pattern that is partially explained by historical damage from SBW and temperature. Our results show that accumulation of acetophenones is an efficient resistance mechanism against SBW in white spruce and that insects can affect population structure of a long-lived plant

    Evolving spectrum of arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy: Implications for Sports Cardiology

    Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) is a genetic heart muscle disease, structurally characterized by progressive fibro-fatty replacement of the normal myocardium and clinically by ventricular arrhythmias (VAs). Predominantly thanks to the use of cardiac magnetic resonance, we have learnt that the spectrum of the disease encompasses not only the classical right ventricular phenotype, but also biventricular and left dominant variants. Sport activity contributes to the phenotypic expression and progression of ACM and may trigger life-threatening VAs and sudden cardiac death (SCD). We conducted a review of the literature about ACM and its implications in Sport Cardiology and summarized the main findings in this topic. Early identification of affected athletes through preparticipation screening (PPS) is fundamental but, while classical right-ventricular or biventricular phenotypes are usually suspected because of electrocardiogram (ECG) and echocardiographic abnormalities, variants with predominant left ventricular involvement are often characterized by normal ECG and unremarkable echocardiography. Usually the only manifestations of such variants are exercise-induced VAs and for this reason exercise testing may empower the diagnostic yield of the PPS. Patients with ACM are not eligible to competitive sports activity, but low-to-moderate intensity physical activity under medical supervision is possible in most cases
