Fuzzy Based Packet Dropping Scheme in Wireless Cellular Networks
Wireless multimedia networks are becoming very popular owing to the user demands for multimedia services. Packet dropping in the event of buffer congestion is one of the important issue in wireless multimedia networks. A packet dropping scheme has to be flexible and adaptive such that acceptable quality of an application is maintained. The paper presents a fuzzy based packet dropping scheme for wireless multimedia networks. A buffer manager placed at the base station performs packet dropping depending upon the traffic conditions and type of an application. Packet dropping is performed by computing dropping factor by considering packet priority, queue length and adaptive queue length threshold. The adaptive queue length threshold is used to dynamically adjust the dropping factor. The queue length threshold is varied by using two fuzzy input parameters, channel condition and rate of flow of an application. The scheme has been extensively simulated to test the performance in terms of acceptance and dropping probability of real-time handoff and new calls
Photoinjector design for the LCLS
The design of the Linac Coherent Light Source assumes that a low-emittance,
1-nC, 10-ps beam will be available for injection into the 15-GeV linac. The
proposed rf photocathode injector that will provide a 150-MeV beam with rms
normalized emittances of 1 mm in both the transverse and longitudinal
dimensions is based on a 1.6-cell S-band rf gun that is equipped with an
emittance compensating solenoid. The booster accelerator is positioned at the
beam waist coinciding with the first emittance maximum and is provided with an
accelerating gradient of ~25 MeV/m, i.e., the "new working point." The uv
pulses required for cathode excitation will be generated by tripling the output
of a Ti:sapphire laser system consisting of a highly stable cw mode-locked
oscillator and two bow-tie amplifiers pumped by a pair of Q-switched Nd:YAG
lasers. The large bandwidth of the Ti:sapphire system accommodates the desired
temporal pulse shaping. Details of the design and the supporting simulations

Gravitational Lensing at Millimeter Wavelengths
With today's millimeter and submillimeter instruments observers use
gravitational lensing mostly as a tool to boost the sensitivity when observing
distant objects. This is evident through the dominance of gravitationally
lensed objects among those detected in CO rotational lines at z>1. It is also
evident in the use of lensing magnification by galaxy clusters in order to
reach faint submm/mm continuum sources. There are, however, a few cases where
millimeter lines have been directly involved in understanding lensing
configurations. Future mm/submm instruments, such as the ALMA interferometer,
will have both the sensitivity and the angular resolution to allow detailed
observations of gravitational lenses. The almost constant sensitivity to dust
emission over the redshift range z=1-10 means that the likelihood for strong
lensing of dust continuum sources is much higher than for optically selected
sources. A large number of new strong lenses are therefore likely to be
discovered with ALMA, allowing a direct assessment of cosmological parameters
through lens statistics. Combined with an angular resolution <0.1", ALMA will
also be efficient for probing the gravitational potential of galaxy clusters,
where we will be able to study both the sources and the lenses themselves, free
of obscuration and extinction corrections, derive rotation curves for the

Detector Description and Performance for the First Coincidence Observations between LIGO and GEO
For 17 days in August and September 2002, the LIGO and GEO interferometer
gravitational wave detectors were operated in coincidence to produce their
first data for scientific analysis. Although the detectors were still far from
their design sensitivity levels, the data can be used to place better upper
limits on the flux of gravitational waves incident on the earth than previous
direct measurements. This paper describes the instruments and the data in some

Relation between serum uric acid and carotid intima-media thickness in healthy postmenopausal women
OBJECTIVE:
Serum uric acid (SUA) is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). However it is still disputed whether the relationship is mediated by other risk factors such as obesity, dyslipidaemia, hypertension and insulin resistance. We explored the association of the uric acid level with carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), a well known marker of CVD, in postmenopausal healthy women.
METHODS:
We consecutively enrolled postmenopausal women undergoing a screening for health evaluation. After an accurate clinical examination, and a biochemical evaluation, the enrolled subjects underwent B mode ultrasonography to assess common carotid intima media thickness.
RESULTS:
Among 234 women aged 45-70 years, the uric acid level is associated with carotid IMT independently of other prognostic factors (p=0.03). In particular, women in the highest tertiles of uric acid level have a greater IMT than women in the lowest tertile (p=0.007).
CONCLUSIONS:
Independently of other cardiovascular risk factors, SUA levels are associated with carotid IMT even in subjects without the metabolic syndrome. This confirms and expands the role of uric acid in the determinism of CVD. Prospective trials would be useful to evaluate interventions aimed at lowering the uric acid level
Measurement of the Bottom-Strange Meson Mixing Phase in the Full CDF Data Set
We report a measurement of the bottom-strange meson mixing phase \beta_s
using the time evolution of B0_s -> J/\psi (->\mu+\mu-) \phi (-> K+ K-) decays
in which the quark-flavor content of the bottom-strange meson is identified at
production. This measurement uses the full data set of proton-antiproton
collisions at sqrt(s)= 1.96 TeV collected by the Collider Detector experiment
at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to 9.6 fb-1 of integrated luminosity.
We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of \beta_s and the
B0_s decay-width difference \Delta\Gamma_s, and measure \beta_s in [-\pi/2,
-1.51] U [-0.06, 0.30] U [1.26, \pi/2] at the 68% confidence level, in
agreement with the standard model expectation. Assuming the standard model
value of \beta_s, we also determine \Delta\Gamma_s = 0.068 +- 0.026 (stat) +-
0.009 (syst) ps-1 and the mean B0_s lifetime, \tau_s = 1.528 +- 0.019 (stat) +-
0.009 (syst) ps, which are consistent and competitive with determinations by

Search for a CP-odd Higgs boson decaying to Zh in pp collisions at âs=8TeV with the ATLAS detector
A search for a heavy, CP-odd Higgs boson, A, decaying into a Zboson and a 125GeV Higgs boson, h, with the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. The search uses protonâproton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 8TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3fbâ1. Decays of CP-even hbosons to ÏÏor bbpairs with the Zboson decaying to electron or muon pairs are considered, as well as h âbbdecays with the Zboson decaying to neutrinos. No evidence for the production of an Aboson in these channels is found and the 95% confidence level upper limits derived for Ï(ggâA) ĂBR(A âZh) ĂBR(h âfÂŻf)are 0.098â0.013pb for f=Ïand 0.57â0.014pb for f=bin a range of mA=220â1000GeV. The results are combined and interpreted in the context of two-Higgs-doublet models.
