Discontinuous mixed penalty-free Galerkin method for second-order quasilinear elliptic equations

    No full text
Discrete schemes for finding an approximate solution of the Dirichlet problem for a second-order quasilinear elliptic equation in conservative form are investigated. The schemes are based on the discontinuous Galerkin method (DG schemes) in a mixed formulation and do not involve internal penalty parameters. Error estimates typical of DG schemes with internal penalty are obtained. A new result in the analysis of the schemes is that they are proved to satisfy the Ladyzhenskaya-Babuska-Brezzi condition (inf-sup) condition. © 2013 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd

Solvent effect on the heat of solution and partial molar volume of magnesium perchlorate

    No full text
For magnesium perchlorate (MP), the solvent effect on the heat of solution and partial molar volumes (PMV) at 25 °C was studied. Since the complete dissociation of magnesium perchlorate is more difficult to achieve as compared with lithium perchlorate (LP), the concentration dependence of the values of the heat of solution and partial molar volume were noted. Only in highly polar solvents with large donor numbers (DN), such as water, dimethyl sulfoxide, N,N-dimethyl formamide, and formamide, the differential and integral values of the enthalpies of solution were the same in the range of concentrations studied. In all solvents studied, the values of the heat of solution of MP were highly exothermic and exceed that of LP by more than 30 kcal mol-1. The values of the partial molar volume of MP were changed from 82.3 cm3 mol-1 in formamide to -2.4 cm3 mol-1 in acetone, and correlate linearly with that of LP (R=0.975). Taking into account the significant change in the properties of molecules in the solvate shell of cation Mg2+, the large increase in the reactivity of reactants, activated by such interaction with Mg2+ cation is expected. © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

Partial regularization method for nonmonotone variational inequalities

    No full text
A variational inequality with a nonmonotone mapping is considered in a Euclidean space. A regularization method with respect to some of the variables is proposed for its solution. The convergence of the method is proved under a coercivity-type condition. The method is applied to an implicit optimization problem with an arbitrary perturbing mapping. The solution technique combines partial regularization and the dual descent method. © 2008 MAIK Nauka

    The Jahn-Teller effect in Cr5+-doped PbTiO3: A multi-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance study

    No full text
Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra of Cr5+ defects incorporated on Ti4+ sites in powdered ceramics of PbTiO3 were investigated in the temperature range 50-400K at 9GHz (X), 34GHz (Q) and 94GHz (W band). The Jahn-Teller effect stabilizes the vibronic ground state of the 3d1 electron of the Cr5+ ion and leads to a tetragonally distorted defect- O6 octahedron with the point symmetry D4h. The spontaneous electrical polarization present in the ferroelectric phase of PbTiO3 appears as a further perturbation producing an additional g-tensor contribution by the quadratic field effect. Its symmetry is dependent on the orientation of the electrical polarization with respect to the Jahn-Teller distortion axis, the tetragonal axis of the defect- O6 octahedron. If the polarization of a domain is anti-or parallel to this axis, the local tetragonal symmetry of the Cr5+ ion persists whereas it is reduced by a perpendicular orientation. Anisotropic EPR spectra of tetragonally and orthorhombic distorted Cr5+O6 12- are detected at low temperatures. Increasing the temperature, the peaks of the two spectra are broadened and a motionally averaged isotropic spectrum appears at 200K. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd

Distinctive thermodynamic properties of solute-solvent hydrogen bonds in self-associated solvents

    No full text
Solute-solvent hydrogen bonding affects reactivity and other properties of dissolved species. In self-associated media, because of cooperativity and solvent reorganization, the thermodynamic functions of solute bonding with bulk solvent can be different from those of bimolecular solute-solvent complexes. Using available experimental data on the Gibbs free energies of solvation in aliphatic alcohols and water, we have determined the energies of solute-solvent hydrogen bonding for various proton accepting solutes. We show that the increase in the strength of hydrogen bonds because of the cooperative effect is strong for bonding with bulk water and significantly less so with bulk aliphatic alcohols. The hydrogen bonding Gibbs free energies for the same solute with bulk water and alcohol are correlated, but they correlate poorly with the energies of formation of the corresponding bimolecular solute-solvent complexes. Thus, the traditional hydrogen bond basicity scales, based on data for bimolecular complexes, do not correctly describe the thermodynamics of hydrogen bonding with self-associated solvents. Our results may help to define a separate solute basicity scale for associated media. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

Experience of the industrial use of alumina and KA zeolite in the processes of drying of olefin-containing mixtures in petrochemical industry

    No full text
Problems arising in relation to the use of alumina and zeolite KA in the processes of drying olefin-containing streams in petrochemical production lines were analyzed, and the advantages offered by zeolites were shown. The reasons for the domination of imported zeolites on the domestic market are considered, and recommendations for strengthening the positions of national zeolite manufactures are given. © 2009 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd
