Timing of Favorable Conditions, Competition and Fertility Interact to Govern Recruitment of Invasive Chinese Tallow Tree in Stressful Environments
The rate of new exotic recruitment following removal of adult invaders (reinvasion pressure) influences restoration
outcomes and costs but is highly variable and poorly understood. We hypothesize that broad variation in average
reinvasion pressure of Triadica sebifera (Chinese tallow tree, a major invader) arises from differences among habitats in
spatiotemporal availability of realized recruitment windows. These windows are periods of variable duration long enough to
permit establishment given local environmental conditions. We tested this hypothesis via a greenhouse mesocosm
experiment that quantified how the duration of favorable moisture conditions prior to flood or drought stress (window
duration), competition and nutrient availability influenced Triadica success in high stress environments. Window duration
influenced pre-stress seedling abundance and size, growth during stress and final abundance; it interacted with other
factors to affect final biomass and germination during stress. Stress type and competition impacted final size and biomass,
plus germination, mortality and changes in size during stress. Final abundance also depended on competition and the
interaction of window duration, stress type and competition. Fertilization interacted with competition and stress to
influence biomass and changes in height, respectively, but did not affect Triadica abundance. Overall, longer window
durations promoted Triadica establishment, competition and drought (relative to flood) suppressed establishment, and
fertilization had weak effects. Interactions among factors frequently produced different effects in specific contexts. Results
support our ‘outgrow the stress’ hypothesis and show that temporal availability of abiotic windows and factors that
influence growth rates govern Triadica recruitment in stressful environments. These findings suggest that native seed
addition can effectively suppress superior competitors in stressful environments. We also describe environmental scenarios
where specific management methods may be more or less effective. Our results enable better niche-based estimates of
local reinvasion pressure, which can improve restoration efficacy and efficiency by informing site selection and optimal

Impact of Splenectomy on Thrombocytopenia, Chemotherapy, and Survival in Patients with Unresectable Pancreatic Cancer
Patients with unresectable pancreatic cancer (PDAC) or endocrine tumors (PET) often develop splenic vein thrombosis, hypersplenism, and thrombocytopenia which limits the administration of chemotherapy.
From 2001 to 2009, 15 patients with recurrent or unresectable PDAC or PET underwent splenectomy for hypersplenism and thrombocytopenia. The clinical variables of this group of patients were analyzed. The overall survival of patients with PDAC was compared to historical controls.
Of the 15 total patients, 13 (87%) had PDAC and 2 (13%) had PET. All tumors were either locally advanced (n = 6, 40%) or metastatic (n = 9, 60%). The platelet counts significantly increased after splenectomy (p < 0.01). All patients were able to resume chemotherapy within a median of 11.5 days (range 6–27). The patients with PDAC had a median survival of 20 months (range 4–67) from the time of diagnosis and 10.6 months (range 0.6–39.8) from the time of splenectomy.
Splenectomy for patients with unresectable PDAC or PET who developed hypersplenism and thrombocytopenia that limited the administration of chemotherapy, significantly increased platelet counts, and led to resumption of treatment in all patients. Patients with PDAC had better disease-specific survival as compared to historical controls
The Cosmological Baryon Density from the Deuterium Abundance at a redshift z = 3.57
We present a measurement of the deuterium to hydrogen ratio in a quasar
absorption system at redshift z = 3.57 towards QSO 1937-1009. We use a two
component fit, with redshifts determined from unsaturated metal lines, to fit
the hydrogen and deuterium features simultaneously. We find a low value of D/H
= 2.3 \pm 0.6 \times 10^{-5}, which does not agree with other measurements of
high D/H (Songaila et al. 1994, Carswell et al. 1994). The absorption system is
very metal poor, with metallicities less than 1/100 solar. Standard models of
chemical evolution show the astration of deuterium is limited to a few percent
from primordial for systems this metal-poor, so we believe our value represents
the primordial one. Using predictions of standard big-bang nucleosynthesis and
measurements of the cosmic microwave background, our measurement gives the

SPARC, FOXP3, CD8 and CD45 Correlation with Disease Recurrence and Long-Term Disease-Free Survival in Colorectal Cancer
BACKGROUND: SPARC is a matricellular protein involved in tissue remodelling, cell migration and angiogenesis, while forkhead box P3 (FOXP3) protein functions as a transcription factor involved in immune cell regulation. Both SPARC and FOXP3 can play an anti-tumorigenic role in cancer progression. The aim was to determine if SPARC, FOXP3, CD8 and CD45RO expression levels are associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) stage, disease outcome and long-term cancer-specific survival (CSS) in stage II and III CRC. METHODS AND FINDINGS: SPARC expression was initially assessed in 120 paired normal and stage I-IV CRCs. Subsequently, approximately 1000 paired patient samples of stage II or III CRCs in tissue microarrays were stained for SPARC, FOXP3, CD8 or CD45RO. Proportional hazards modelling assessed correlations between these markers and clinicopathological data, including disease outcome and cancer specific survival (CSS). Both SPARC and FOXP3 expression were significantly greater in CRC than normal colon (p<0.0001). High SPARC expression correlated with good disease outcome (≥60 mths without disease recurrence, p = 0.0039) and better long-term CSS in stage II CRC (<0.0001). In stage III CRC, high SPARC expression correlated with better long-term CSS (p<0.0001) and less adjuvant chemotherapy use (p = 0.01). High FOXP3 correlated with a good disease outcome, better long-term CSS and less adjuvant chemotherapy use in stage II (p<0.0037, <0.0001 and p = 0.04 respectively), but not in stage III CRC. High CD8 and CD45RO expression correlated with better disease outcome in stage II CRC, and better CSS, but the differences were not as marked as for SPARC and FOXP3. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that high SPARC and FOXP3 are associated with better disease outcome in stage II CRC and may be prognostic indicators of CSS. Further assessment of whether these markers predict patients at high risk of recurrence with stage II CRC and functional studies of these effects are underway

Pan-cancer analysis of whole genomes
Cancer is driven by genetic change, and the advent of massively parallel sequencing has enabled systematic documentation of this variation at the whole-genome scale(1-3). Here we report the integrative analysis of 2,658 whole-cancer genomes and their matching normal tissues across 38 tumour types from the Pan-Cancer Analysis of Whole Genomes (PCAWG) Consortium of the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). We describe the generation of the PCAWG resource, facilitated by international data sharing using compute clouds. On average, cancer genomes contained 4-5 driver mutations when combining coding and non-coding genomic elements; however, in around 5% of cases no drivers were identified, suggesting that cancer driver discovery is not yet complete. Chromothripsis, in which many clustered structural variants arise in a single catastrophic event, is frequently an early event in tumour evolution; in acral melanoma, for example, these events precede most somatic point mutations and affect several cancer-associated genes simultaneously. Cancers with abnormal telomere maintenance often originate from tissues with low replicative activity and show several mechanisms of preventing telomere attrition to critical levels. Common and rare germline variants affect patterns of somatic mutation, including point mutations, structural variants and somatic retrotransposition. A collection of papers from the PCAWG Consortium describes non-coding mutations that drive cancer beyond those in the TERT promoter(4); identifies new signatures of mutational processes that cause base substitutions, small insertions and deletions and structural variation(5,6); analyses timings and patterns of tumour evolution(7); describes the diverse transcriptional consequences of somatic mutation on splicing, expression levels, fusion genes and promoter activity(8,9); and evaluates a range of more-specialized features of cancer genomes(8,10-18).Peer reviewe
