    Meaning between, in, and around words, gestures and postures: multimodal meaning making in children's classroom communication

    The view of language from a social semiotic perspective is clear. Language is one of many semiotic resources we employ in our communicative practices. That is to say that while language is at times dominant, it always operates within a multimodal frame and furthermore, at times modes other than language are dominant. The proposed 2014 National Curriculum for the UK, on the other hand, values pupils' face-to-face classroom interaction in terms of standard spoken English (i.e. in terms of the mode of language alone). This paper offers examples demonstrating how embodied modes such as gesture, posture, facial expression, gaze and haptics work in conjunction with speech in children's collaborative construction of knowledge. In other words, what may have been previously conceived as gaps and silences - often interpreted as an absence of language - are in fact instantiations of the work of semiotic modes other than language. In order to consider this closely, this paper offers evidence from a multimodal micro-analysis of pupil-to-pupil, face-to-face interaction in one science lesson in a Year Five UK Primary classroom.     Use of alternative and complementary medicine in menopause

    Objectives: To review the clinical evidence available for the treatment of menopausal symptoms with alternative and complementary medicine. Methods: The MEDLINE, PREMEDLINE and COCHRANE electronic databases for the years 1980–2002 were searched for articles concerning soy products, black cohosh, dong quai, acupuncture, ginseng and evening primrose oil. Studies pertaining to menopausal vasomotor symptoms, lipid profiles and bone mineral densities of postmenopausal women were included. The data from clinical trials were reviewed. Results: Soy isoflavones slightly decrease total cholesterol and LDL levels. The clinical significance of this small change is yet to be determined. The synthetic isoflavone derivative ipriflavone increases bone mineral density in healthy peri‐ and postmenopausal women with moderate bone mineral densities. Although earlier reports have claimed that soy is beneficial for the improvement of vasomotor symptoms, recent data do not support this claim. There are insufficient data on the other alternative therapies for treating menopausal symptoms at this time.     Pan-cancer analysis of whole genomes

    Cancer is driven by genetic change, and the advent of massively parallel sequencing has enabled systematic documentation of this variation at the whole-genome scale(1-3). Here we report the integrative analysis of 2,658 whole-cancer genomes and their matching normal tissues across 38 tumour types from the Pan-Cancer Analysis of Whole Genomes (PCAWG) Consortium of the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). We describe the generation of the PCAWG resource, facilitated by international data sharing using compute clouds. On average, cancer genomes contained 4-5 driver mutations when combining coding and non-coding genomic elements; however, in around 5% of cases no drivers were identified, suggesting that cancer driver discovery is not yet complete. Chromothripsis, in which many clustered structural variants arise in a single catastrophic event, is frequently an early event in tumour evolution; in acral melanoma, for example, these events precede most somatic point mutations and affect several cancer-associated genes simultaneously. Cancers with abnormal telomere maintenance often originate from tissues with low replicative activity and show several mechanisms of preventing telomere attrition to critical levels. Common and rare germline variants affect patterns of somatic mutation, including point mutations, structural variants and somatic retrotransposition. A collection of papers from the PCAWG Consortium describes non-coding mutations that drive cancer beyond those in the TERT promoter(4); identifies new signatures of mutational processes that cause base substitutions, small insertions and deletions and structural variation(5,6); analyses timings and patterns of tumour evolution(7); describes the diverse transcriptional consequences of somatic mutation on splicing, expression levels, fusion genes and promoter activity(8,9); and evaluates a range of more-specialized features of cancer genomes(8,10-18).Peer reviewe

    Nature’s nations: the shared conservation history of Canada and the USA

    Historians often study the history of conservation within the confines of national borders, concentrating on the bureaucratic and political manifestations of policy within individual governments. Even studies of the popular expression of conservationist ideas are generally limited to the national or sub-national (province, state, etc.) scale. This paper suggests that conservationist discourse, policy and practice in Canada and the USA were the products of a significant cross-border movement of ideas and initiatives derived from common European sources. In addition, the historical development of common approaches to conservation in North America suggests, contrary to common assumptions, that Canada did not always lag behind the USA in terms of policy innovation. The basic tenets of conservation (i.e. state control over resource, class-based disdain for subsistence hunters and utilitarian approaches to resource management) have instead developed at similar time periods and along parallel ideological paths in Canada and the USA

    Flow measurements near the boundary of a finite turbulent patch in stable stratification

    Turbulent patches are a common feature in the ocean, yet many questions remain concerning the mixing characteristics of these patches in stably stratified environments. A three-dimensional, finite patch of turbulence is formed by an oscillating grid in both fresh water and an index-of-refraction matched stably stratified solution. Optical measurements including synchronized particle image velocimetry and planar laser induced fluorescence have been performed to capture the life cycle of the patch from its initial growth until it reaches critical height followed by its eventual collapse. The simultaneous capture of density and velocity allows for an assessment of both the density interface of the patch and the turbulent/non-turbulent interface. The experimental data suggest that the density boundary becomes more diffuse as the grid-generated turbulence increases

    Effect of using of reclaimed asphalt and/or lower temperature asphalt on the availability of the road network

    The use of reclaimed asphalt, secondary component materials and/or additives and lower temperature asphalt are being increasingly used in order to improve the sustainability of asphalt production. The use of reclaimed asphalt reduces the need for virgin materials whilst lower temperature asphalts have reduced CO2 emissions, increased sustainability, improved working conditions for construction and maintenance crews, reduced noise level on the work sites, extended paving season and provided financial benefits from lower production and transport costs. However, there is uncertainty about the ageing and durability performance of these technologies because there is limited information available on their long-term performance. Changes in durability will affect the availability of the road network for highway authorities. CEDR commissioned a European project to assess these uncertainties. A site trial was commissioned on one of the Irelands busiest motorways (M3), comprising stone mastic asphalt mixtures containing varying proportions of the reclaimed asphalt with some using warm mix technology. The site has been monitored regularly over a full calendar year for the material performance. A suite of laboratory tests have been undertaken concentrating on the combined effect of ageing and moisture damage on the performance of asphalt mixtures on the site trial. The findings have been used to develop life-cycle analysis models to customise them for the effect of using alternative component materials on the availability of the network and their overall financial and environmental cost, both initial and whole-life. The costs identified are both direct (of the construction and maintenance) and indirect (on society in general, such as congestion). The paper describes the model and the assurance that can be given to the assumptions made within the model from the research findings.     Towards validation and standardization of automatic gait event identification algorithms for use in paediatric pathological populations

    Background: To analyse and interpret gait patterns in pathological paediatric populations, accurate determination of the timing of specific gait events (e.g. initial contract – IC, or toe-off – TO) is essential. As currently used clinical identification methods are generally subjective, time-consuming, or limited to steps with force platform data, several techniques have been proposed based on processing of marker kinematics. However, until now, validation and standardization of these methods for use in diverse gait patterns remains lacking. Research questions: 1) What is the accuracy of available kinematics-based identification algorithms in determining the timing of IC and TO for diverse gait signatures? 2) Does automatic identification affect interpretation of spatio-temporal parameters?. Methods: 3D kinematic and kinetic data of 90 children were retrospectively analysed from a clinical gait database. Participants were classified into 3 gait categories: group A (toe-walkers), B (flat IC) and C (heel IC). Five kinematic algorithms (one modified) were implemented for two different foot marker configurations for both IC and TO and compared with clinical (visual and force-plate) identification using Bland-Altman analysis. The best-performing algorithm-marker configuration was used to compute spatio-temporal parameters (STP) of all gait trials. To establish whether the error associated with this configuration would affect clinical interpretation, the bias and limits of agreement were determined and compared against inter-trial variability established using visual identification. Results: Sagittal velocity of the heel (Group C) or toe marker configurations (Group A and B) was the most reliable indicator of IC, while the sagittal velocity of the hallux marker configuration performed best for TO. Biases for walking speed, stride time and stride length were within the respective inter-trial variability values. Significance: Automatic identification of gait events was dependent on algorithm-marker configuration, and best results were obtained when optimized towards specific gait patterns.     The co-pollutant cost of carbon emissions: An analysis of the US electric power generation sector

    Fossil fuel combustion releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere along with co-pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and others. These emissions result in environmental externalities primarily in terms of climate and air quality. Here we quantify the cost of co-pollutant emissions per ton of CO 2 emissions from US electric power generation. We measure the co-pollutant cost of carbon (CPCC) as the total value of statistical life associated with US-based premature mortalities attributable to co-pollutant emissions, per mass of CO 2. We find an average CPCC of ∼45permetricton(mt)ofCO2fortheyear2011(in2017USD).Thisis2045 per metric ton (mt) of CO 2 for the year 2011 (in 2017 USD). This is ∼20% higher than the central Social Cost of Carbon (SCC) measure of climate damages that was used by the Obama administration in its regulatory impact analysis for the Clean Power Plan (CPP), and >8 times higher than the SCC used by the Trump administration in its analysis for the Plan's repeal. At the state-level, the CPCC ranged from ∼7/mt CO 2 for Arizona to ∼96/mtCO2forNewJersey.WecalculatetheCPCCtrendsfrom2002to2017andfinda7196/mt CO 2 for New Jersey. We calculate the CPCC trends from 2002 to 2017 and find a 71% decrease at the national level, contributing to total savings of ∼1 trillion in averted mortality from power plant emissions over this period. By decomposing the aggregate and fuel-specific co-pollutant intensities into simultaneous (CO 2-driven) and autonomous components, we conclude that the CPCC trends originated mainly from targeted efforts to reduce co-pollutant emissions, e.g. through fuel switching (from coal to natural gas) and autonomous changes in co-pollutant emissions. The results suggest that the overall benefit to society from policies to curtail carbon emissions may be enhanced by focusing on pollution sources where the associated air-quality co-benefits are greatest. At the same time, continued efforts to reduce co-pollutant intensities, if technologically feasible, could help to mitigate the air-quality damages of the CPP's repeal and replacement.     On-line content uniformity determination of tablets using low-resolution Raman spectroscopy

    Analytical techniques for rapid and nondestructive content uniformity determination of pharmaceutical solid dosage forms have been studied for several years in an effort to replace the traditional wet chemistry procedures, which are labor intensive and time consuming. Both Raman spectroscopy and near-infrared spectroscopy have been used for this purpose, and predictability errors are approaching those of the traditional techniques. In this study, a low-resolution Raman spectrometer was utilized to demonstrate the feasibility of both rapid at-line and on-line determination of tablet content uniformity. Additionally, sampling statistics were reviewed in an effort to determine how many tablets should be assayed for specific batch sizes. A good correlation was observed between assay values determined by high-performance liquid chromatography and Raman analysis. Due to rapid acquisition times for the Raman data, it was possible to analyze far more samples than with wet chemistry methods, leading to a better statistical description of variation within the batch. For at-line experiments, the sampling volume was increased by rotating the laser beam during the acquisition period. For the on-line experiments, the sampling volume was increased by sampling from a stream of tablets moving underneath the Raman probe on a conveyor system. Finally, an approach is proposed for monitoring content uniformity immediately following the compaction process. In conclusion, Raman spectroscopy has potential as a rapid, nondestructive technique for at- or on-line determination of tablet content uniformity.Journal Articl

    Improving satellite monitoring of coastal inundations of pelagic Sargassum algae with wind and citizen science data

    Massive blooms of pelagic Sargassum algae have caused serious problems to coastal communities and ecosystems throughout the tropical Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico since 2011. Efforts to monitor and predict these occurrences are challenging owing to the vast area impacted and the complexities associated with the proliferation and movement of Sargassum. Sargassum Inundation Reports (SIRs) were first produced in 2019 to estimate the potential risk to coastlines throughout the Intra-American Sea at weekly intervals at 10 km resolution. SIRs use satellite-based data products to estimate beaching risk from the amount of offshore Sargassum (quantified by a Floating Algal density index). Here we examine whether including wind metrics improves the correspondence between the offshore Floating Algal density index and observations of Sargassum along the coastline. For coastal observations, we quantified the percent coverage of Sargassum in photos obtained from the citizen science project “Sargassum Watch” that collects time-stamped, georeferenced photos at beaches throughout the region. Region-wide analyses indicate that including shoreward wind velocity with SIR risk indices greatly improves the correspondence with coastal observations of Sargassum beaching compared to SIR risk indices alone. Site-specific analyses of photos from southeast Florida, USA, and data from a continuous video monitoring study at Puerto Morelos, Mexico, suggest potential uncertainties in the suite of factors controlling Sargassum beaching. Nonetheless, the inclusion of wind velocity in the SIR algorithm appears to be a promising avenue for improving regional risk indices.Environmental Fluid Mechanic
