    Mapping the Relationship Among Political Ideology, CSR Mindset, and CSR Strategy: A Contingency Perspective Applied to Chinese Managers

    The literature on antecedents of corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategies of firms has been predominately content driven. Informed by the managerial sense-making process perspective, we develop a contingency theoretical framework explaining how political ideology of managers affects the choice of CSR strategy for their firms through their CSR mindset. We also explain to what extent the outcome of this process is shaped by the firm’s internal institutional arrangements and external factors impacting on the firm. We develop and test several hypotheses using data collected from 129 Chinese managers. The results show that managers with a stronger socialist ideology are likely to develop a mindset favouring CSR, which induces the adoption of a proactive CSR strategy. The CSR mindset mediates the link between socialist ideology and CSR strategy. The strength of the relationship between the CSR mindset and the choice of CSR strategy is moderated by customer response to CSR, industry competition, the role of government, and CSR-related managerial incentives

    Pan-cancer analysis of whole genomes

    Cancer is driven by genetic change, and the advent of massively parallel sequencing has enabled systematic documentation of this variation at the whole-genome scale(1-3). Here we report the integrative analysis of 2,658 whole-cancer genomes and their matching normal tissues across 38 tumour types from the Pan-Cancer Analysis of Whole Genomes (PCAWG) Consortium of the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). We describe the generation of the PCAWG resource, facilitated by international data sharing using compute clouds. On average, cancer genomes contained 4-5 driver mutations when combining coding and non-coding genomic elements; however, in around 5% of cases no drivers were identified, suggesting that cancer driver discovery is not yet complete. Chromothripsis, in which many clustered structural variants arise in a single catastrophic event, is frequently an early event in tumour evolution; in acral melanoma, for example, these events precede most somatic point mutations and affect several cancer-associated genes simultaneously. Cancers with abnormal telomere maintenance often originate from tissues with low replicative activity and show several mechanisms of preventing telomere attrition to critical levels. Common and rare germline variants affect patterns of somatic mutation, including point mutations, structural variants and somatic retrotransposition. A collection of papers from the PCAWG Consortium describes non-coding mutations that drive cancer beyond those in the TERT promoter(4); identifies new signatures of mutational processes that cause base substitutions, small insertions and deletions and structural variation(5,6); analyses timings and patterns of tumour evolution(7); describes the diverse transcriptional consequences of somatic mutation on splicing, expression levels, fusion genes and promoter activity(8,9); and evaluates a range of more-specialized features of cancer genomes(8,10-18).Peer reviewe

    Who, when and where? Identification of patients at risk of an in-hospital adverse event: Implications for nursing practice

    Patients who suffer an adverse event (AE) are more likely to die or suffer permanent disability. Many AEs are preventable. Nurses have long played a pivotal role in the prevention of AEs. Much of the literature to date pertains to the role of nurses in the prevention of AEs such as falls, pressure areas and deep vein thrombosis. Prominent risk factors for AEs are the presence of physiological abnormality, failure to recognize or correct physiological abnormality, advanced patient age and location of patient room. Ongoing physiological assessment of patients is a nursing responsibility and the assessment findings of nurses underpin many patient care decisions. The early recognition and correction of physiological abnormality can improve patient outcomes by reducing the incidence of AEs, making nurses\u27 ability to identify, interpret and act on physiological abnormality a fundamental factor in AE prediction and prevention. This paper will examine the role of nurses in AE prevention, using cardiac arrest as an example, from the perspective of physiological safety; that is, accurate physiological assessment and the early correction of physiological abnormality.<br /

    Albuminuria correlates with hemolysis and NAG and KIM-1 in patients with sickle cell anemia

    Although hyperfiltration and albuminuria are common pathological conditions, kidney injury (KI) biomarkers have been seldom studied in individuals with sickle cell anemia (SCA).We undertook a cross-sectional assessment of urine KI biomarkers in children and adults with SCA with and without albuminuria and a normal estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Albumin, KI molecule 1 (KIM-1), N-acetyl-ß-D-glucosaminidase (NAG), endothelin-1 and transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) were measured. Assays were normalized by urine creatinine. Urine intracellular hemosiderin and serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were assessed as markers of hemolysis. Albuminuria was associated to the biomarkers by Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients. Differences between the albuminuria (yes, no) groups were assessed by the t test.Nineteen patients with albuminuria (mean urine albumin/creatinine 527.14 ± 1070 mg/g, range 38.3-–190 mg/g) and 19 patients without albuminuria (mean urine albumin/creatinine 15.93 ± 5.17 mg/g, range 7.9–28.4 mg/g) were studied. The age range for the whole group was 11–48 years, and 47 % were males. Patients with albuminuria were older, had lower hematocrit, were more likely to test positive for urine hemosiderin and had a higher KIM-1 (P = 0.0035) and NAG/ creatinine ratios (P = 0.0062). Urine hemosiderin strongly correlated to a higher LDH level (P < 0.001).Despite a normal or increased eGFR, KI biomarkers were detected in the urine of individuals with SCA.
