Visual search for basic emotional expressions in autism: impaired processing of anger, fear and sadness, but a typical happy face advantage
Facial expression recognition was investigated in 20 males with high functioning autism (HFA) or Asperger syndrome (AS), compared to typically developing individuals matched for chronological age (TD CA group) and verbal and non-verbal ability (TD V/NV group). This was the first study to employ a visual search, "face in the crowd" paradigm with a HFA/AS group, which explored responses to numerous facial expressions using real-face stimuli. Results showed slower response times for processing fear, anger and sad expressions in the HFA/AS group, relative to the TD CA group, but not the TD V/NV group. Reponses to happy, disgust and surprise expressions showed no group differences. Results are discussed with reference to the amygdala theory of autism. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd
Universal psychometrics: measuring cognitive abilities in the machine kingdom
We present and develop the notion of âuniversal psychometricsâ as a subject of study, and
eventually a discipline, that focusses on the measurement of cognitive abilities for the machine
kingdom, which comprises any (cognitive) system, individual or collective, either artificial,
biological or hybrid. Universal psychometrics can be built, of course, upon the experience,
techniques and methodologies from (human) psychometrics, comparative cognition and related
areas. Conversely, the perspective and techniques which are being developed in the area
of machine intelligence measurement using (algorithmic) information theory can be of much
broader applicability and implication outside artificial intelligence. This general approach
to universal psychometrics spurs the re-understanding of most (if not all) of the big issues
about the measurement of cognitive abilities, and creates a new foundation for (re)defining
and mathematically formalising the concept of cognitive task, evaluable subject, interface,
task choice, difficulty, agent response curves, etc. We introduce the notion of a universal
cognitive test and discuss whether (and when) it may be necessary for exploring the machine
kingdom. On the issue of intelligence and very general abilities, we also get some results and
connections with the related notions of no-free-lunch theorems and universal priorsWe thank the anonymous reviewers for their comments. Patterns of ongoing thought in the real world
Health and well-being are impacted by our thoughts and the things we do. In the laboratory, studies suggest specific task contexts impact thought processes. More broadly, this suggests the people we are with, the places we are in, and the activities we perform may influence our thought patterns. In our study, participants completed experience sampling surveys for five days in daily life. Principal component analysis decomposed this data to identify common âpatterns of thought,â and linear mixed modelling related these patterns to the participantsâ activities. Our study replicated the influence of socializing on patterns of thought and established that this is part of a broader set of relationships linking activities to how thoughts are organized in daily life. Our study suggests sampling thinking in the real world may help map thoughts to activities, and these âthought-activityâ mappings could be useful to researchers and health care professionals interested in health and well-being
The twilight of the Liberal Social Contract? On the Reception of Rawlsian Political Liberalism
This chapter discusses the Rawlsian project of public reason, or public justification-based 'political' liberalism, and its reception. After a brief philosophical rather than philological reconstruction of the project, the chapter revolves around a distinction between idealist and realist responses to it. Focusing on political liberalismâs critical reception illuminates an overarching question: was Rawlsâs revival of a contractualist approach to liberal legitimacy a fruitful move for liberalism and/or the social contract tradition? The last section contains a largely negative answer to that question. Nonetheless the chapter's conclusion shows that the research programme of political liberalism provided and continues to provide illuminating insights into the limitations of liberal contractualism, especially under conditions of persistent and radical diversity. The programme is, however, less receptive to challenges to do with the relative decline of the power of modern states
Model-independent search for CP violation in D0âKâK+ÏâÏ+ and D0âÏâÏ+Ï+Ïâ decays
A search for CP violation in the phase-space structures of D0 and View the MathML source decays to the final states KâK+ÏâÏ+ and ÏâÏ+Ï+Ïâ is presented. The search is carried out with a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fbâ1 collected in 2011 by the LHCb experiment in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. For the KâK+ÏâÏ+ final state, the four-body phase space is divided into 32 bins, each bin with approximately 1800 decays. The p-value under the hypothesis of no CP violation is 9.1%, and in no bin is a CP asymmetry greater than 6.5% observed. The phase space of the ÏâÏ+Ï+Ïâ final state is partitioned into 128 bins, each bin with approximately 2500 decays. The p-value under the hypothesis of no CP violation is 41%, and in no bin is a CP asymmetry greater than 5.5% observed. All results are consistent with the hypothesis of no CP violation at the current sensitivity
Observation of two new baryon resonances
Two structures are observed close to the kinematic threshold in the mass spectrum in a sample of proton-proton collision data, corresponding
to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb recorded by the LHCb experiment.
In the quark model, two baryonic resonances with quark content are
expected in this mass region: the spin-parity and
states, denoted and .
Interpreting the structures as these resonances, we measure the mass
differences and the width of the heavier state to be
MeV,
MeV,
MeV, where the first and second
uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The width of the
lighter state is consistent with zero, and we place an upper limit of
MeV at 95% confidence level. Relative

Search for the lepton-flavor-violating decays Bs0âe±Όâ and B0âe±Όâ
A search for the lepton-flavor-violating decays Bs0âe±Όâ and B0âe±Όâ is performed with a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0ââfb-1 of pp collisions at âs=7ââTeV, collected by the LHCb experiment. The observed number of Bs0âe±Όâ and B0âe±Όâ candidates is consistent with background expectations. Upper limits on the branching fractions of both decays are determined to be B(Bs0âe±Όâ)101ââTeV/c2 and MLQ(B0âe±Όâ)>126ââTeV/c2 at 95% C.L., and are a factor of 2 higher than the previous bounds
Measurement of the relative rate of prompt Ïc0, Ïc1 and Ïc2 production at âs=7TeV
Prompt production of charmonium Ïc0, Ïc1 and Ïc2 mesons is studied using proton-proton collisions at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of âs=7TeV. The Ïc mesons are identified through their decay to J/ÏÎł, with J/ÏâÎŒ+muâ using photons that converted in the detector. A data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0fbâ1 collected by the LHCb detector, is used to measure the relative prompt production rate of Ïc1 and Ïc2 in the rapidity range 2.0<y<4.5 as a function of the J/Ï transverse momentum from 3 to 20 GeV/c. First evidence for Ïc0 meson production at a hadron collider is also presented

decays is reported with a significance of 6.2 standard deviations.
