    Resumo: O artigo aborda a problemática da comunicação com pessoas que sofrem algum tipo de demência, a partir de uma perspectiva da Pedagogia Social. O trabalho argumenta que o fundamento de qualquer comunicação é a possibilidade de assumir, pelo menos parcialmente, a perspectiva do outro. Com a perda das capacidades cognitivas causada pela demência, a pessoa com demência é cada vez menos capaz de assumir a perspectiva de uma outra pessoa. Desta forma, o doente perde o contato com o mundo exterior que se torna cada vez menos compreensível. O artigo aponta ainda para algumas formas de lidar com esta situação por parte de profi ssionais e familiares. Palavras-chave: Envelhecimento. Demência. Doença de Alzheimer. Pedagogia Social. Abstract: The article offers refl ections about the problems of communication with people with dementia on the point of view of social pedagogy. It arguments that the base of all communication is the possibility to assume, at least partially, the point of view of the communication partner. Loosing the cognitive capacity, the person with dementia is each time less capable to realize the cognitive movement. On this way, he starts to loose the contact with the exterior world, which becomes less and less comprehensible for him.     1st International round robin on EL imaging: automated camera calibration and image normalisation

    Results from the first international Round Robin on electroluminescence (EL) imaging of PV devices are presented. 17 Laboratories across Europe, Asia and the US measured EL images of ten commercially available modules and five single-cell modules. This work presents a novel automated camera calibration and image scaling routine. Its performance is quantified through comparing intensity deviation of corrected images and their cell average. While manual calibration includes additional measurement of lens distortion and flat field, the automated calibration extracts camera calibration parameters (here: lens distortion, and vignetting) exclusively from EL images. Although it is shown that the presented automated calibration outperforms the manual one, the method proposed in this work uses both manual and automated calibration. 501 images from 24 cameras are corrected. Intensity deviation of cell averages of every measured device decreased from 10.3 % (results submitted by contributing labs) to 2.8 % (proposed method), For three images the image correction produced insufficient results and vignetting correction failed for one camera, known of having a non-linear camera sensor. Surprisingly, largest image quality improvements are achieved by spatially precise image alignment of the same device and not by correcting for vignetting and lens distortion. This is due to overall small lens distortion and the circumstance that, although vignetting caused intensity reduction of more than 50%, PV devices are generally positioned in the image centre in which vignetting distortion is lowest

    Measurements of the Cosmic Ray Composition with Air Shower Experiments

    In this paper we review air shower data related to the mass composition of cosmic rays above 1015^{15} eV. After explaining the basic relations between air shower observables and the primary mass and energy of cosmic rays, we present different approaches and results of composition studies with surface detectors. Furthermore, we discuss measurements of the longitudinal development of air showers from non-imaging Cherenkov detectors and fluorescence telescopes. The interpretation of these experimental results in terms of primary mass is highly susceptible to the theoretical uncertainties of hadronic interactions in air showers. We nevertheless attempt to calculate the logarithmic mass from the data using different hadronic interaction models and to study its energy dependence from 1015^{15} to 1020^{20} eV.Comment: 21 pages, invited review accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics, Topical Issue on Cosmic Ray

    Association of daily tar and nicotine intake with incident myocardial infarction: Results from the population-based MONICA/KORA Augsburg Cohort Study 1984 - 2002

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Cigarette smoking has been shown to be one of the most important risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. However, little is known about cumulative effects of daily tar and nicotine intake on the risk of incident myocardial infarction (MI) so far. To bridge this gap, we conducted an analysis in a large prospective study from Southern Germany investigating associations of daily tar and nicotine intake with an incident MI event.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The study was based on 4,099 men and 4,197 women participating in two population-based MONICA Augsburg surveys between 1984 and 1990 and followed up within the KORA framework until 2002. During a mean follow-up of 13.3 years, a number of 307 men and 80 women developed an incident MI event. Relative risks were calculated as hazard ratios (HRs) estimated by Cox proportional hazards models adjusted for cardiovascular risk factors.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In the present study, male regular smokers consumed on average more cigarettes per day than female regular smokers (20 versus 15) and had a higher tar and nicotine intake per day. In men, the MI risk compared to never-smokers increased with higher tar intake: HRs were 2.24 (95% CI 1.40-3.56) for 1-129 mg/day, 2.12 (95% CI 1.37-3.29) for 130-259 mg/day and 3.01 (95% CI 2.08-4.36) for ≥ 260 mg/day. In women, the corresponding associations were comparable but more pronounced for high tar intake (HR 4.67, 95% CI 1.76-12.40). Similar associations were observed for nicotine intake.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The present study based on a large population-based sample adds important evidence of cumulative effects of tar and nicotine intake on the risk of incident MI. Even low or medium tar and nicotine intake revealed substantial risk increases as compared to never-smokers. Therefore, reduction of tar and nicotine contents in cigarettes cannot be seen as a suitable public health policy in preventing myocardial infarction.</p

    Longer and better lives for patients with atrial fibrillation:the 9th AFNET/EHRA consensus conference

    Aims: Recent trial data demonstrate beneficial effects of active rhythm management in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and support the concept that a low arrhythmia burden is associated with a low risk of AF-related complications. The aim of this document is to summarize the key outcomes of the 9th AFNET/EHRA Consensus Conference of the Atrial Fibrillation NETwork (AFNET) and the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA). Methods and results: Eighty-three international experts met in Münster for 2 days in September 2023. Key findings are as follows: (i) Active rhythm management should be part of the default initial treatment for all suitable patients with AF. (ii) Patients with device-detected AF have a low burden of AF and a low risk of stroke. Anticoagulation prevents some strokes and also increases major but non-lethal bleeding. (iii) More research is needed to improve stroke risk prediction in patients with AF, especially in those with a low AF burden. Biomolecules, genetics, and imaging can support this. (iv) The presence of AF should trigger systematic workup and comprehensive treatment of concomitant cardiovascular conditions. (v) Machine learning algorithms have been used to improve detection or likely development of AF. Cooperation between clinicians and data scientists is needed to leverage the potential of data science applications for patients with AF. Conclusions: Patients with AF and a low arrhythmia burden have a lower risk of stroke and other cardiovascular events than those with a high arrhythmia burden. Combining active rhythm control, anticoagulation, rate control, and therapy of concomitant cardiovascular conditions can improve the lives of patients with AF

    The Neural Representation of Prospective Choice during Spatial Planning and Decisions

    We are remarkably adept at inferring the consequences of our actions, yet the neuronal mechanisms that allow us to plan a sequence of novel choices remain unclear. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate how the human brain plans the shortest path to a goal in novel mazes with one (shallow maze) or two (deep maze) choice points. We observed two distinct anterior prefrontal responses to demanding choices at the second choice point: one in rostrodorsal medial prefrontal cortex (rd-mPFC)/superior frontal gyrus (SFG) that was also sensitive to (deactivated by) demanding initial choices and another in lateral frontopolar cortex (lFPC), which was only engaged by demanding choices at the second choice point. Furthermore, we identified hippocampal responses during planning that correlated with subsequent choice accuracy and response time, particularly in mazes affording sequential choices. Psychophysiological interaction (PPI) analyses showed that coupling between the hippocampus and rd-mPFC increases during sequential (deep versus shallow) planning and is higher before correct versus incorrect choices. In short, using a naturalistic spatial planning paradigm, we reveal how the human brain represents sequential choices during planning without extensive training. Our data highlight a network centred on the cortical midline and hippocampus that allows us to make prospective choices while maintaining initial choices during planning in novel environments
