Top Quark Production Measurements at ATLAS

An overview of top quark production measurements using the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. Using 35 pb^-1 of data, we measured the ttbar cross-section in the lepton+jets channel to 13% precision and set limits on the cross-section for the all hadronic decay channel. The measurement in the dilepton channel was performed using 0.70 fb^-1 of data and was combined with the lepton+jets channel result for our most precise ttbar cross-section measurement of \sigma(ttbar+X) =176 +- 5(stat) +13 -10 (syst) +-7(lumi). Single top production was also measured in the t-channel using 0.70 fb^-1 of data.Comment: 3 pages + references, 3 figures, Contribution to the proceedings of the PANIC2011 conferenc

Green printing technologies versus traditional printing technologies in sheet-fed offset lithography

    Get PDF
This experimental study compares green printing technologies (ink and stock) to traditional printing technologies (ink and stock) regarding how they compare in quality. The quality was measured using the print characteristics of gray balance and dot gain. A comparison of the two independent variables (ink and stock) was conducted to determine if a difference exists for the selected characteristics. It has been suggested that the green technologies, despite being more environmentally friendly, are not as high in quality and therefore result in a lower quality printed piece. This research used a four-color test form that was printed using both the green and traditional technologies. The characteristics were measured using an X-rite 528 spectrodensitometer, after which the data were analyzed and conclusions reported. The results of the study suggest that there is no practical significance between the different inks and stocks employed in this study. It was determined however that the best print quality in terms of dot gain (meaning the least amount of dot gain) resulted from the combination of green technologies (ink and paper).Department of TechnologyThesis (M.A.

ENGLISH: Logbook records of tuna vessels fishing in the eastern Pacific Ocean were used to prepare charts showing the distribution of yellowfin and skipjack tuna catches by 1-degree area, by quarter of the year, and by gear for the years 1963-1966. Recent changes in the geographical distribution of yellowfin catches are illustrated. The size composition of the U. S. tuna fleet is given, and recent changes are discussed. Se da la composiciĂłn de tamaño de la flota atunera de los E. ENGLISH: Logbook records of tuna vessels fishing in the eastern Pacific Ocean were used to prepare charts showing the distribution of yellowfin tuna and skipjack catches by i-degree area, by quarter of the year, and by gear, for the years 1967-1970. Recent changes in the geographical distribution of yellowfin catch are illustrated. Also given are annual catch statistics and the composition of the international tuna fishing fleets which operated in the Commission's Yellowfin Regulatory Area each year, 1962-1970. Design of a magnetostrictive (MS) actuator

    Get PDF
Several advanced technologies are introduced in automotive applications. Higher energy density and dynamic performance are demanding new and cost effective actuator structures. Magnetostriction (MS), change in shape of materials under the influence of an external magnetic field, is one of these advanced technologies. Good understanding of specific design constrains is required to define and optimized a magnetostrictive actuator. This paper presents parametrical analysis with magnetic simulation of a magnetostrictive actuator. Proposed actuator has been designed, and the performance has been evaluated on experimental rig. Strain, elongation of the shaft, of 1000ppm at 10Amp and a blocked force over 4500N has been achieved with shaft of 8mm diameter, made of Terfenol-D. Furthermore, the effect of pre-stress of the Terfenol-D shaft has been evaluated experimentally. The study shows that excellent features can be obtained by magnetostrictive materials for many advanced applications

Length-frequency estimation for yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) caught by commercial fishing gear in the Eastern Pacific Ocean

ENGLISH: Methods of collecting samples for the purpose of estimating the numbers and weights of fish caught, by length interval, are described. Several models for two-stage sampling are described, and the equations for the estimators and their variances are given. The results from a brief simulation study are used to show the differences between estimates made with the different models. Estimators for the average weights of fish in the catch and their variances are also described. These average weights are used to provide improved estimates of the total annual catches of yellowfin taken from the eastern Pacific Ocean, east of 150°W, between 1955 and 1990. The internet and sexual offending: an international perspective

    Get PDF
Although the sexual abuse of children is a long-standing problem that has received considerable scholarly attention, still little is understood about sex offenses that occur by means of, or are facilitated through, the Internet. Increasing awareness of the Internet as a platform for the perpetration of sexual crimes has raised new questions on this aspect of criminal behavior. Of interest, for example, is whether those who engage in Internet-related sex crimes are a distinct type of sexual offender, or whether these offenders “merely” use newer technological methods to facilitate or perpetrate offenses. Moreover, little is known about the patterns, motivations, or typological similarities among types of individuals who use the Internet to commit sexual crimes. Of further concern is the risk posed by this class of sexual offenders, particularly the extent or rate at which those with an Internet-based conviction will escalate to (or have already engaged in) other types of sexual offences, especially “hands on” or contact sexual offenses. In reviewing the current empirical literature and drawing attention to areas of research need, this chapter addresses these and other pertinent questions related to use of the Internet in the commission of sexual offenses This chapter also draws focus to the importance of international cooperation, including policing, industry, (e.g., Internet Service Providers [ISPs], finance companies), and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), in the control and persecution of these offenses. Given the still limited empirical knowledge in this area, coupled with the inherently global nature of the Internet and the pace of technological advancement, the prosecution of Internet-based sexual crimes poses unique challenges that require thoughtful and rigorous scholarly attention
