    Effects of active reminders and motivational techniques on oral hygiene and gingival health in orthodontic patients: a randomized clinical trial

    Purpose: To compare repeated oral hygiene instructions and motivation to text message reminders in improving oral hygiene compliance Methods: For this prospective, randomized controlled clinical trial, 60 patients were assigned to one of four groups. Group 1 served as a control. Group 2 received weekly text message for oral hygiene. Group 3 received in-person oral hygiene instructions at each visit. Group 4 received both text messages and in person oral hygiene instructions. Oral hygiene was measured with Bleeding Index (BI), Modified Gingival Index (MGI), and Plaque Index (PI). Baseline measurements were obtained at the day of bonding (T0) and then at the subsequent 3 adjustment visits (T1, T2, T3). Results: Repeated measures ANOVA was used to determine the effect of the intervention groups on the change in oral hygiene across the visits. The average age was 15 and 43% were male. Based on the data from 242 total visits, intervention group was not associated with a significant change in plaque index (p=0.26), modified gingival index (p=0.78), or bleeding index (p=0.12). Conclusions: Patients who presented with good oral hygiene initially were able to maintain it during the first four months of treatment regardless of the intervention. Practitioners should highly consider a patient’s pretreatment oral hygiene status before starting orthodontic treatment

    Dirac Coupled-channel Analyses of Polarized Proton Scatterings to the 2+^+ Gamma Vibrational Band in 24^{24}Mg and 26^{26}Mg

    Dirac coupled channel calculations are performed phenomenologically for the high-lying excited states that belong to the 2+^+ gamma vibrational band at the 800-MeV polarized proton inelastic scatterings from the s-d shell nuclei, 24^{24}Mg and 26^{26}Mg. Optical potential model is used and scalar and time-like vector potentials are considered as direct potentials. First-order vibrational collective models are used to obtain the transition optical potentials in order to accommodate the high-lying excited vibrational collective states. The complicated Dirac coupled channel equations are solved phenomenologically to reproduce the differential cross section and analyzing power data by varying the optical potential and deformation parameters. It is found that the relativistic Dirac coupled channel calculation could describe the high-lying excited states of the 2+^+ gamma vibrational band at the 800-MeV polarized proton inelastic scatterings from s-d shell nuclei 24^{24}Mg and 26^{26}Mg reasonably well, showing better agreement with the experimental data compared to the results obtained from the nonrelativistic calculations.     Conserved system with limited number of entities obeying non-Maxwellian, non-Gaussian and non-chi-square distributions

    We demonstrate that the most probable state of a conserved system with limited number of entities is the state where non-Maxwellian, non-Gaussian and non-chi-square distributions govern. We have used the following setup of a thought experiment where a conserved system consists of limited number of entities or molecules. We have verified the mathematical derivation correctly predict the results obtained by computer simulations. The derived distributions approach the Maxwellian and the chi-square distributions as the number of entities approaches infinity. The derived distributions will have an important role in the fields of medical research where the number of entities in the system of interest is limited. Especially, the non-chi-square distribution can be interpreted by an asset distribution achieved after a repetitive game where an arbitrary portion of one's asset is transferred to other arbitrary entity among a number of entities whose abilities are equal.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure
