Three-dimensional negative index of refraction at optical frequencies by coupling plasmonic waveguides
We identify a route towards achieving a negative index of refraction at
optical frequencies based on coupling between plasmonic waveguides that support
backwards waves. We show how modal symmetry can be exploited in
metal-dielectric waveguide pairs to achieve negative refraction of both phase
and energy. By properly controlling coupling between adjacent waveguides, a
metamaterial consisting of a one-dimensional multilayer stack exhibiting an
isotropic index of -1 can be achieved at a free-space wavelength of 400 nm. The
general concepts developed here may inspire new low-loss metamaterial designs
operating close to the metal plasma frequency.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure
Shrinking a large dataset to identify variables associated with increased risk of Plasmodium falciparum infection in Western Kenya
Large datasets are often not amenable to analysis using traditional single-step approaches. Here, our general objective was to apply imputation techniques, principal component analysis (PCA), elastic net and generalized linear models to a large dataset in a systematic approach to extract the most meaningful predictors for a health outcome. We extracted predictors for Plasmodium falciparum infection, from a large covariate dataset while facing limited numbers of observations, using data from the People, Animals, and their Zoonoses (PAZ) project to demonstrate these techniques: data collected from 415 homesteads in western Kenya, contained over 1500 variables that describe the health, environment, and social factors of the humans, livestock, and the homesteads in which they reside. The wide, sparse dataset was simplified to 42 predictors of P. falciparum malaria infection and wealth rankings were produced for all homesteads. The 42 predictors make biological sense and are supported by previous studies. This systematic data-mining approach we used would make many large datasets more manageable and informative for decision-making processes and health policy prioritization
Osteology and relationships of Rhinopycnodus gabriellae gen. et sp. nov. (Pycnodontiformes) from the marine Late Cretaceous of Lebanon
The osteology of Rhinopycnodus gabriellae gen. and sp. nov., a pycnodontiform fish from the marine Cenomanian (Late Cretaceous) of Lebanon, is studied in detail. This new fossil genus belongs to the family Pycnodontidae, as shown by the presence of a posterior brush-like process on its parietal. Its long and broad premaxilla, bearing one short and very broad tooth is the principal autapomorphy of this fish. Within the phylogeny of Pycnodontidae, Rhinopycnodus occupies an intermediate position between Ocloedus and Tepexichthys
The evolution of the galaxy luminosity function in the rest frame blue band up to z=3.5
We present an estimate of the cosmological evolution of the field galaxy
luminosity function (LF) in the rest frame 4400 Angstrom B -band up to redshift
z=3.5. To this purpose, we use a composite sample of 1541 I--selected galaxies
selected down to I_(AB)=27.2 and 138 galaxies selected down to K_(AB)=25 from
ground-based and HST multicolor surveys, most notably the new deep JHK images
in the Hubble Deep Field South (HDF-S) taken with the ISAAC instrument at the
ESO-VLT telescope. About 21% of the sample has spectroscopic redshifts, and the
remaining fraction well calibrated photometric redshifts. The resulting blue LF
shows little density evolution at the faint end with respect to the local
values, while at the bright end (M_B(AB)<-20) a brightening increasing with
redshift is apparent with respect to the local LF. Hierarchical CDM models
overpredict the number of faint galaxies by about a factor 3 at z=1. At the
bright end the predicted LFs are in reasonable agreement only at low and
intermediate redshifts (z=1), but fail to reproduce the pronounced brightening
observed in the high redshift (z=2-3) LF. This brightening could mark the epoch

Measurement of the Bottom-Strange Meson Mixing Phase in the Full CDF Data Set
We report a measurement of the bottom-strange meson mixing phase \beta_s
using the time evolution of B0_s -> J/\psi (->\mu+\mu-) \phi (-> K+ K-) decays
in which the quark-flavor content of the bottom-strange meson is identified at
production. This measurement uses the full data set of proton-antiproton
collisions at sqrt(s)= 1.96 TeV collected by the Collider Detector experiment
at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to 9.6 fb-1 of integrated luminosity.
We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of \beta_s and the
B0_s decay-width difference \Delta\Gamma_s, and measure \beta_s in [-\pi/2,
-1.51] U [-0.06, 0.30] U [1.26, \pi/2] at the 68% confidence level, in
agreement with the standard model expectation. Assuming the standard model
value of \beta_s, we also determine \Delta\Gamma_s = 0.068 +- 0.026 (stat) +-
0.009 (syst) ps-1 and the mean B0_s lifetime, \tau_s = 1.528 +- 0.019 (stat) +-
0.009 (syst) ps, which are consistent and competitive with determinations by

The 1998 outburst of the X-ray transient XTE J2012+381 as observed with BeppoSAX
We report on the results of a series of X-ray observations of the transient
black hole candidate XTE J2012+381 during the 1998 outburst performed with the
BeppoSAX satellite. The observed broad-band energy spectrum can be described
with the superposition of an absorbed disk black body, an iron line plus a high
energy component, modelled with either a power law or a Comptonisation tail.
The source showed pronounced spectral variability between our five
observations. While the soft component in the spectrum remained almost
unchanged throughout our campaign, we detected a hard spectral tail which
extended to 200 keV in the first two observations, but became barely detectable
up to 50 keV in the following two. A further re-hardening is observed in the
final observation. The transition from a hard to a soft and then back to a hard
state occurred around an unabsorbed 0.1-200 keV luminosity of 10^38 erg/s (at
10 kpc). This indicates that state transitions in XTE 2012+281 are probably not
driven only by mass accretion rate, but additional physical parameters must

The Initial Mass Function as given by the fragmentation
The dichotomy between a universal mass function (IMF) and a variable IMF
which depends on local physical parameters characterises observational and
theoretical stellar astronomy. In this contribution the available distributions
of probability are briefly reviewed. The physical nature of two of them, gamma
variate and lognormal, is then explained once the framework of the
fragmentation is introduced. Interpolating techniques are then applied to the
sample of the first 10 pc and to the open cluster NGC6649: in both cases
lognormal distribution produces the best fit. The three power law function has
also been investigated and visual comparison with an artificially generated
sample of 100000 stars suggests that the variations in the spectral index are
simply due to the small number of stars available in the observational sample.
In order to derive the sample of masses, a new formula that allows us to
express the mass as a function of the absolute magnitude and (B-V) for MAIN V,
GIANTS III and SUPERGIANTS I is derived.Comment: 6 pages 9 figure
Dynamic structure selection and instabilities of driven Josephson lattice in high-temperature superconductors
We investigate the dynamics of the Josephson vortex lattice in layered
high-T superconductors at high magnetic fields. Starting from coupled
equations for superconducting phases and magnetic field we derive equations for
the relative displacements [phase shifts] between the planar Josephson arrays
in the layers. These equations reveal two families of steady-state solutions:
lattices with constant phase shifts between neighboring layers, starting from
zero for a rectangular configuration to for a triangular configuration,
and double-periodic lattices. We find that the excess Josephson current is
resonantly enhanced when the Josephson frequency matches the frequency of the
plasma mode at the wave vector selected by the lattice structure. The regular
lattices exhibit several kinds of instabilities. We find stability regions of
the moving lattice in the plane lattice structure - Josephson frequency. A
specific lattice structure at given velocity is selected uniquely by boundary
conditions, which are determined by the reflection properties of
electromagnetic waves generated by the moving lattice. With increase of
velocity the moving configuration experiences several qualitative
transformations. At small velocities the regular lattice is stable and the
phase shift between neighboring layers smoothly decreases with increase of
velocity, starting from for a static lattice. At the critical velocity
the lattice becomes unstable. At even higher velocity a regular lattice is
restored again with the phase shift smaller than . With increase of

Structural dichroism in the antiferromagnetic insulating phase of V_2O_3
We performed near-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XANES) at V K edge in
the antiferromagnetic insulating (AFI) phase of a 2.8% Cr-doped V_2O_3 single
crystal. Linear dichroism of several percent is measured in the hexagonal plane
and found to be in good agreement with ab-initio calculations based on multiple
scattering theory. This experiment definitively proves the structural origin of
the signal and therefore solves a controversy raised by previous
interpretations of the same dichroism as non-reciprocal. It also calls for a
further investigation of the role of the magnetoelectric annealing procedure in
