Educational research from the perspectives of social sciences and jurisprudence

(DIPF/Orig.)Foci of educational research are the individual, social, economic, and political conditions, which influence education processes in public and private institutions. Topic of political scientific research on education is the cutting line between the educational and political systems, while jurisprudential research on education deals with the relationship between educational systems, processes, and players on the one hand and the legal order on the other. The article differentiates the two different disciplinary approaches to educational research and describes their main questions and subject areas. lt looks into the emergence and development as well as into the fields and institutions of the two approaches to educational research. The article closes with four examples for forthcoming political scientific research on education. (DIPF/Orig.

Prevalence and Antimicrobial-Resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Swimming Pools and Hot Tubs

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an important opportunistic pathogen in recreational waters and the primary cause of hot tub folliculitis and otitis externa. The aim of this surveillance study was to determine the background prevalence and antimicrobial resistance profile of P. aeruginosa in swimming pools and hot tubs. A convenience sample of 108 samples was obtained from three hot tubs and eight indoor swimming pools. Water and swab samples were processed using membrane filtration, followed by confirmation with polymerase chain reaction. Twenty-three samples (21%) were positive for P. aeruginosa, and 23 isolates underwent susceptibility testing using the microdilution method. Resistance was noted to several antibiotic agents, including amikacin (intermediate), aztreonam, ceftriaxone, gentamicin, imipenem, meropenem (intermediate), ticarcillin/clavulanic acid, tobramycin (intermediate), and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. The results of this surveillance study indicate that 96% of P. aeruginosa isolates tested from swimming pools and hot tubs were multidrug resistant. These results may have important implications for cystic fibrosis patients and other immune-suppressed individuals, for whom infection with multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa would have greater impact. Our results underlie the importance of rigorous facility maintenance, and provide prevalence data on the occurrence of antimicrobial resistant strains of this important recreational water-associated and nosocomial pathogen

High-Spatial Resolution SED of NGC 1068 from Near-IR to Radio. Disentangling the thermal and non-thermal contributions

We investigate the ideas that a sizable fraction of the interferometrically unresolved infrared emission of the nucleus of NGC 1068 might originate from other processes than thermal dust emission from the torus. We examine the contribution of free-free or synchrotron emissions to the central mid- and near-IR parsec-scale emitting region of NGC 1068. Each mechanism is constrained with parsec scale radio data available for NGC 1068 in the 10^9 - 10^11 Hz regime, and compared to the highest-resolution interferometric data available in the mid-infrared. It is shown that the unresolved emission in the interferometric observation (<~1pc) is still dominatedd by dust emission and not by contributions from synchrotron or free-free emission. As recent studies suggest, the interferometric observations prefer a clumpy structure of the dust distribution. Extrapolation of the radio free-free or synchrotron emission to the IR indicates that their contribution is <20% even for the unresolved fraction of the interferometric flux. The slope of the available radio data is consistent with a power law exponent alpha = 0.29 +/- 0.07 which we interprete in terms of either free-free emission or synchrotron radiation from quasi-monochromatic electrons. We apply emission models for both mechanisms in order to obtain physical parameters. (abridged)Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures; accepted by A&

Glioma imaging in Europe: A survey of 220 centres and recommendations for best clinical practice

    Get PDF
Objectives: At a European Society of Neuroradiology (ESNR) Annual Meeting 2015 workshop, commonalities in practice, current controversies and technical hurdles in glioma MRI were discussed. We aimed to formulate guidance on MRI of glioma and determine its feasibility, by seeking information on glioma imaging practices from the European Neuroradiology community. Methods: Invitations to a structured survey were emailed to ESNR members (n=1,662) and associates (n=6,400), European national radiologists’ societies and distributed via social media. Results: Responses were received from 220 institutions (59% academic). Conventional imaging protocols generally include T2w, T2-FLAIR, DWI, and pre- and post-contrast T1w. Perfusion MRI is used widely (85.5%), while spectroscopy seems reserved for specific indications. Reasons for omitting advanced imaging modalities include lack of facility/software, time constraints and no requests. Early postoperative MRI is routinely carried out by 74% within 24–72 h, but only 17% report a percent measure of resection. For follow-up, most sites (60%) issue qualitative reports, while 27% report an assessment according to the RANO criteria. A minori
