    Study of the magnetic susceptibility in the spin-Peierls system CuGeO3_3

    We study numerically, using a one-dimensional Heisenberg model, the spin-Peierls transition in the linear Cu2+^{2+} spin-1/2 chains in the inorganic compound CuGeO3_3 which has been recently observed experimentally. We suggest that the magnetic susceptibility, the temperature dependence of the spin gap and the spin-Peierls transition temperature of this material can be reasonably described by including nearest and next nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions along the chain. We estimate that the nearest neighbor exchange parameter J is approximately 160K160\:\rm K, and that the next nearest neighbor exchange parameter is approximately 0.36J0.36\:\rm J.Comment: 14 pages, Revtex v2.0, 4 figures available upon reques

    Older people and medication taking behaviour: A review of the literature

    Background: Older people represent a sizeable population of the UK. Many older people receive drug treatment for long term conditions. Adherence with medication is therefore an important clinical, financial and resource intensive concern. Objectives: This review aimed to examine patient’s beliefs, perceptions and views in relation to adherence with medication. Design: A comprehensive search of the literature was undertaken using numerous approaches. The search of revealed 30 research papers. Findings: Articles were initially evaluated using Critical Appraisal Skills Programme principles to identify those relevant to the review. Relevant studies were then subjected to a narrative analysis to assist the development of relevant themes. Four themes were identified; experience of adherence; perceptions and attitudes to medication adherence and non-adherence; patients acceptance of their illness and impact on medication taking behaviour and shared decision making. Conclusions: The findings of this review imply that there is a need for more emphasis on shared decision making between the older patient and the prescriber. Using this approach adherence with medication may improve. There is also a need to develop a standardized measure of medication adherence

    The Structure of the Big Bang from Higher-Dimensional Embeddings

    We give relations for the embedding of spatially-flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmological models of Einstein's theory in flat manifolds of the type used in Kaluza-Klein theory. We present embedding diagrams that depict different 4D universes as hypersurfaces in a higher dimensional flat manifold. The morphology of the hypersurfaces is found to depend on the equation of state of the matter. The hypersurfaces possess a line-like curvature singularity infinitesimally close to the t=0+t = 0^+ 3-surface, where tt is the time expired since the big bang. The family of timelike comoving geodesics on any given hypersurface is found to have a caustic on the singular line, which we conclude is the 5D position of the point-like big bang.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, revtex4, accepted in Class.     Developmental biology investigations have evolved from static studies of embryo anatomy and into dynamic studies of the genetic and cellular mechanisms responsible for shaping the embryo anatomy. With the advancement of fluorescent protein fusions, the ability to visualize and comprehend how thousands to millions of cells interact with one another to form tissues and organs in three dimensions (xyz) over time (t) is just beginning to be realized and exploited. In this review, we explore recent advances utilizing confocal and multi-photon time-lapse microscopy to capture gene expression, cell behavior, and embryo development. From choosing the appropriate fluorophore, to labeling strategy, to experimental set-up, and data pipeline handling, this review covers the various aspects related to acquiring and analyzing multi-dimensional data sets. These innovative techniques in multi-dimensional imaging and analysis can be applied across a number of fields in time and space including protein dynamics to cell biology to morphogenesis
