    Pervasive gaps in Amazonian ecological research

    Biodiversity loss is one of the main challenges of our time,1,2 and attempts to address it require a clear un derstanding of how ecological communities respond to environmental change across time and space.3,4 While the increasing availability of global databases on ecological communities has advanced our knowledge of biodiversity sensitivity to environmental changes,5–7 vast areas of the tropics remain understudied.8–11 In the American tropics, Amazonia stands out as the world’s most diverse rainforest and the primary source of Neotropical biodiversity,12 but it remains among the least known forests in America and is often underrepre sented in biodiversity databases.13–15 To worsen this situation, human-induced modifications16,17 may elim inate pieces of the Amazon’s biodiversity puzzle before we can use them to understand how ecological com munities are responding. To increase generalization and applicability of biodiversity knowledge,18,19 it is thus crucial to reduce biases in ecological research, particularly in regions projected to face the most pronounced environmental changes. We integrate ecological community metadata of 7,694 sampling sites for multiple or ganism groups in a machine learning model framework to map the research probability across the Brazilian Amazonia, while identifying the region’s vulnerability to environmental change. 15%–18% of the most ne glected areas in ecological research are expected to experience severe climate or land use changes by 2050.     The recommendations listed in this document are, whenever possible, evidence based. An extensive evidence review was conducted as the document was compiled through December 2008. Repeated literature searches were performed by the guideline development staff and writing committee members as new issues were considered. New clinical trials published in peer-reviewed journals and articles through December 2011 were also reviewed and incorporated when relevant. Furthermore, because of the extended development time period for this guideline, peer review comments indicated that the sections focused on imaging technologies required additional updating, which occurred during 2011. Therefore, the evidence review for the imaging sections includes published literature through December 2011

    Obstructive airway compromise in the early postoperative period after orthognathic surgery

    Between January 1, 1989 and April 30, 2012, approximately 2164 consecutive patients were treated with orthognathic surgery at the St. John's Hospital, Genk, Belgium. They all underwent a mandibular, maxillary, or bimaxillary osteotomy, performed by one of the 3 resident maxillofacial surgeons at the St. John's hospital in Genk. The purpose of the review was to investigate the incidence of major airway difficulties occurring postoperatively because of surgically related causes. It seemed that obstructive airway compromise was the only reason for urgent intervention to protect or to restore the airway. In total, 3 urgent unanticipated life-saving reintubations were attempted. One was successful, and the other was changed into an urgent tracheostomy. No deaths occurred in this patient series after orthognathic surgery. Osseous genioplasties, as stand-alone surgery or in combination with other simultaneous orthognathic procedures, do care the risk for a life-threatening respiratory distress because of a hematoma of the floor of the mouth, when performed with an oscillating saw or a surgical drill. If so, this probably will happen within the first 4 postoperative hours according to the experience in our series. This risk can be avoided by using a piezosurgical unit to perform the osseous genioplasty

    N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone as a Reaction Medium for Gold(III)-Ion Reduction and Star-like Gold Nanostructure Formation

    The efficiency of a wet chemical route to synthesize gold nanostructures with tunable size and shape significantly depends on the applied solvent and the interaction of solvent molecules with other species such as gold ions. The ability of the organic solvent N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as a suitable medium for application in star-like gold nanostructure (AuNS) synthesis with a tunable morphology at ambient conditions has been investigated. The time-dependent analysis of the UV–vis absorption spectra of AuIIICl₄– in a pure NMP solution illustrates the role of NMP as simultaneous complexing and reducing agents. Kinetic studies indicate that AuIIICl₄– in NMP solution is reduced to AuICl₂–, with no need to use another reducing agent, any external energy sources, or solvent pretreatment. This is because AuI species stay stable in this solution unless poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) catalyzes their disproportionation. Morphological studies by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) specify the high-yield synthesis of AuNS with monocrystalline spikes in a concentrated NMP solution by PVP. This study illustrates that the presence of seeds, as another agent to catalyze the disproportionation of AuI species, makes it possible to synthesize AuNS in varying concentrations of PVP in this medium. The role of PVP concentration and the presence of seeds in the formation kinetics, morphology, and optical properties is systematically discussed. The results achieved through this study develop a straightforward and safe procedure for AuNS synthesis in high yield in a water-miscible organic polar solvent with tunable morphology and optical properties. Considering the high capability of NMP to dissolve various types of polymers and hydrophobic ligands, synthesizing AuNS in this solvent opens a window to a practical and easy way to fabricate gold-based nanomaterials with fascinating optical properties
