LeWitt, in the Shadow of the Object
Rye Dag Holmboe examines previously undocumented wall drawings produced by Sol LeWitt in the Torre Bonomo in Spoleto in 1976. Using a psychoanalytic framework derived in part from the writings of Adrian Stokes, Holmboe argues for the existence of an “architectural unconscious” in LeWitt's practice and for the crucial importance of architecture to our understanding of Conceptual art more broadly. The essay further explores the choreographic dimensions of LeWitt's work and its autobiographical impulse

Guidelines: The do's, don'ts and don't knows of direct observation of clinical skills in medical education.
IntroductionDirect observation of clinical skills is a key assessment strategy in competency-based medical education. The guidelines presented in this paper synthesize the literature on direct observation of clinical skills. The goal is to provide a practical list of Do's, Don'ts and Don't Knows about direct observation for supervisors who teach learners in the clinical setting and for educational leaders who are responsible for clinical training programs.MethodsWe built consensus through an iterative approach in which each author, based on their medical education and research knowledge and expertise, independently developed a list of Do's, Don'ts, and Don't Knows about direct observation of clinical skills. Lists were compiled, discussed and revised. We then sought and compiled evidence to support each guideline and determine the strength of each guideline.ResultsA final set of 33 Do's, Don'ts and Don't Knows is presented along with a summary of evidence for each guideline. Guidelines focus on two groups: individual supervisors and the educational leaders responsible for clinical training programs. Guidelines address recommendations for how to focus direct observation, select an assessment tool, promote high quality assessments, conduct rater training, and create a learning culture conducive to direct observation.ConclusionsHigh frequency, high quality direct observation of clinical skills can be challenging. These guidelines offer important evidence-based Do's and Don'ts that can help improve the frequency and quality of direct observation. Improving direct observation requires focus not just on individual supervisors and their learners, but also on the organizations and cultures in which they work and train. Additional research to address the Don't Knows can help educators realize the full potential of direct observation in competency-based education

Development and validation of the Early Executive Functions Questionnaire: A carer‐administered measure of Executive Functions suitable for 9‐ to 30‐month‐olds
Executive functions (EFs) enable us to control our attention and behavior in order to set and work toward goals. Strong EF skills are linked to better academic performance, and greater health, wealth, and happiness in later life. Research into EF development has been hampered by a lack of scalable measures suitable for infancy through to toddlerhood. The 31-item Early Executive Functions Questionnaire (EEFQ) complements temperament measures by targeting cognitive and regulatory capabilities. Exploratory Factor Analysis (n = 486 8- to 30-month-olds) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (n = 317 9- to 30-month-olds) indicate Inhibitory Control, Flexibility, and Working Memory items load onto a common “Cognitive Executive Function (CEF)” factor, while Regulation items do not. The CEF factor shows strong factorial measurement invariance for sex, and partial strong factorial measurement invariance for age. CEF and Regulation scores show limited floor and ceiling effects, good internal consistency, short-term stability, and convergent validity with carer-report measures of attentional control. The EEFQ is sensitive to developmental change. Results indicate that the widely overlooked period between late infancy and early toddlerhood may be a sensitive period for EF development. The low-resource demands of the EEFQ afford the possibility to study emergent EFs at scale; opening up new opportunities in basic developmental and intervention research
Marginally unstable Holmboe modes
Marginally unstable Holmboe modes for smooth density and velocity profiles
are studied. For a large family of flows and stratification that exhibit
Holmboe instability, we show that the modes with phase velocity equal to the
maximum or the minimum velocity of the shear are marginally unstable. This
allows us to determine the critical value of the control parameter R
(expressing the ratio of the velocity variation length scale to the density
variation length scale) that Holmboe instability appears R=2. We then examine
systems for which the parameter R is very close to this critical value. For
this case we derive an analytical expression for the dispersion relation of the
complex phase speed c(k) in the unstable region. The growth rate and the width
of the region of unstable wave numbers has a very strong (exponential)
dependence on the deviation of R from the critical value. Two specific examples
are examined and the implications of the results are discussed.Comment: Submitted to Physics of Fluid
Examining paraphilia and emotional regulation with Norwegian speaking adults
Exploration of paraphilia has become an interesting topic for researchers the latest years. Norway lacks sufficient research on paraphilia. Current literature has shown distinct sex differences with men reporting more interest in paraphilia than women. Emotional regulation is suggested from research as a plausible psychological factor that could affect paraphilia. We started a collaboration with SIFER to explore paraphilia and emotional regulation from a non-clinical Norwegian-speaking sample. Two questionnaires were administered: The Paraphilia Scale and DERS-18. Data material was collected through an online study. 313 participants (N = 114 males, 191 females) took part in our study with age from 18 to over 50 years old. To simplify our analysis, The Paraphilia Scale was divided into 13 themes. Findings indicate evident sex differences when looking at paraphilic interests. Masochism and Sadism were the two most popular paraphilic themes for both male and female participants. The least popular themes were found to be Pedohebephilia and Zoophilia. The following paraphilic themes demonstrated sex differences: Biastophilia, Cro/Urophilia, Exhibitionism, Fetishism, Frotteurism, Pedohebephilia, Sadism, Somnophilia and Voyeurism. Male participants reported higher interest on these paraphilic themes. There were no sex differences when only assessing paraphilic behaviors. The relationship between paraphilic interests and paraphilic behaviors showed correlations that were moderate to strong on Biastophilia, Eroticized Gender, Masochism, Sadism, Telephone Scatologia and Voyeurism. The two questionnaires provide evidence showing only one significant association between emotional regulation and paraphilic interests. Implications of our results for research and clinical purposes on The Paraphilia Scale and DERS-18 are discussed
