Parens Patriae Action under Section Four of the Clayton Act

    Get PDF
Hawaii v. Standard Oil Co. presented a question of first impression: Whether a state, in its capacity as parens patriae, may maintain a private antitrust action under Section 4 of the Clayton Act to recover treble damages for injury to its general economy. Although Hawaii appears to be on solid ground in its assertion that it has an interest separate and distinct from its citizens, the Ninth Circuit held that injury to the general economy is too remote and indirect to give the state standing to sue and is not injury to business or property within the meaning of the statute

The Acceptability of Social Media for Enhancing and Extending Learning: A Case Study

    Get PDF
The Accebatabilty of Social Media for Enhancing and Extending Learning was a small study looking at the historical use of social media for business training through an instructional design lens. While social media was relatively young at the time, companies started to use it to enhance their employees\u27 learning. Some took to it, while others did not. 85% of employees were willing to use social media for training. Still, only five employees knew how an employer could use social media for training and had concerns about using this as a job requirement. This study focused on the employee\u27s willingness to use social media for training on the job as a requirement and as a non-required supplemental tool. The purpose was to find the acceptance rates for using social media on the job for both formal and informal learning. The company reviewed was a transportation logistical company in the Twin Cities Metro

University of Missouri--Kansas City, 2019Dissertation advisor: Theodore WhiteIn Part I, the synthesis of chenodeoxychoic acid (CDCA) derivatives towards the construction of unique chemical architectures are reported. Building on previously described methods, CDCA based macrocycles with inner cavities have been synthesized and characterized. Attempts toward oxa-Michael coupling of CDCA monomers to form sulfonate ester linked dimmers is described. CDCA was also functionalized with terminal alkynes (pentynyl, hexynyl, and heptynyl) and aryl iodide and cyclized to from the respective macrocycles. These have been coupled together via oxygen-free Sonogashira reaction conditions to form large barrel-like steroidal architectures. These structures were investigated by 1H NMR, 13C NMR spectroscopy, and HR-MS, and MALDI-TOF spectroscopy. In part II a game to teach organic chemistry, ChemKarta was evaluated as a teaching tool. Analysis of an undergraduate class’s impressions of the game showed that Chemkarta was an easy to learn and enjoyable game, but the amount of information in the game could be overwhelming for some students. Furthermore, the modular nature of the game was demonstrated by developing new cards to fit into the examined card set, as well as additional card sets to teach different subjects using the same game rules.Introduction -- Literature review -- Oxa-Michael strategies toward CDCA dimers -- Synthesis of bile acids derivatives towards macrocycle construction via Sonogashara coupling -- Evaluation and expansion of Chemkarta -- Conclusion -- Appendix A. The Amherst H. Wilder St. Croix Camps are located 25 miles east of Hinckley, Minnesota. The camps provide rehabilitative programming for both male and female juveniles referred by either social services or probation. One of the programming pieces consists of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug curriculum. During this project, the integration of technology and chemical dependency curriculum was explored. The computer program Alcohol 101 for Hish School provided students attending the on-site public school a new way of learning and exploring alcohol use and consequences. Along with providing students a new learning opportunity, teachers and other staff learned about the program\u27s potential uses. A curriculum guide consisting of a unit plan for teachers and daily assignments for students to follow as they proceeded through the program was created to meet the specific needs of the St. Croix Camps

Intramolecular oxa-Michael and Baylis Hillman Strategies towards Sultam Libraries

    Get PDF
The utilization of Baylis-Hillman and oxa-Michael methodologies for the synthesis of sultam (cyclic sulfonamides) libraries from chiral non-racemic amino alcohols and epoxides is reported. These strategies employ a divergent synthetic approach utilizing a central vinyl sulfonamide linchpin and a variety of functional group pairing reactions to generate skeletally diverse sultam scaffolds with a variety of functionalizable handles. A variety of 5, 6, 7, and 8-member sultams are accessible through these methods with excellent diastereoselectivity, yields, and purities. In addition, the oxa-Michael protocol has been utilized in a one-pot protocol for the synthesis of alibrary of 4,4-dioxo-1,4,5-oxathiazepines

The Effects of a HPV Educational Intervention Aimed at Collegiate Males on Knowledge, Vaccine Intention, and Uptake

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the United States (US). In 2013, approximately 6% of 19 to 26-year-old males had received at least one dose of the HPV vaccine (Richman, Maddy, Torres, & Goldberg, 2016). Currently there is no known cure for HPV, however a prophylactic vaccination provides an efficacious method for protection against HPV related diseases. The purpose of the evidence-based project was to provide a HPV educational intervention to collegiate males and examine the effects of HPV knowledge, intention to vaccinate, and receipt of vaccination. The Health Belief Model was selected to provide the theoretical framework and guidance for this project. The Stetler Model was used as the basis for the implementation of the project. The project took place at a Midwestern private university and utilized a longitudinal pre-test and post-test design. Fraternity members were followed to assess the impact of the HPV educational intervention. The intervention consisted of a slide show presentation guided by the CDC, group discussion, and CDC based informational take-home material. HPV and HPV related Knowledge, Attitudes, and Behaviors Questionnaire was administered pre-intervention and one month post-intervention to measure HPV knowledge, intent to receive the HPV vaccine, and receipt of the HPV vaccine. Data was analyzed using SPSS 24.0. Knowledge was assessed using a paired samples t- test with significance determined as p \u3c .05. Statistical analyses revealed a significant increase in knowledge scores from pre-test to post-test (t(84)=--5.76, p \u3c 0.001). Intent to vaccinate and uptake were analyzed with descriptive statistics. Of the 155 post-test participants, 35 (17.1%) participants responded that they intended to receive the HPV vaccine. Of the 106 participants that had not been vaccinated against HPV, 38 (19.4%) had received the first dose of the HPV vaccine. Overall, results of this EBP demonstrated that a HPV educational intervention increased knowledge and vaccine uptake in collegiate males
