Factors affecting the development of sophisticated database marketing systems.
In the late 1980s, companies in a wide variety of industries began to implement segmented marketing strategies using database marketing (DBM) systems. Several surveys noted that some organisations were developing sophisticated DBM systems to achieve competitive advantage, while others, in similar marketplaces, seemed unable, or unwilling, to exploit the potential benefits of these powerful systems. Alternatively, evidence from industrial reports suggested that most companies were failing to fully exploit the capabilities oftheir systems. Hence, this research was designed to determine the factors affecting levels of sophistication in database marketing (DBM) systems.
First, theories from marketing and information systems were synthesised to develop a generic model of DBM systems. Next, notions about the sources of competitive advantage were reviewed to identify potential factors promoting the development of sophisticated DBM systems. This review resulted in four such factors being hypothesised: market orientation as a specific organisation culture, database size (i.e. number of customers) as a key resource, locus of control of the senior marketing manager as an important individual characteristic, and the difference between consumer and business markets as a factor in firms' external environment.
Empirical data were collected from two random samples of senior marketing managers in US catalogue companies using postal surveys. Data from the first sample (36 observations) were used to develop a valid and reliable construct to measure the level of sophistication in DBM systems. Further data were collected from a second random sample using two further postal surveys (69 observations), which confirmed and replicated the results obtained from the first sample.
Overall, the research findings show that the development of sophisticated DBM systems is positively associated with two factors: market orientation of organisation culture, and database size. The other two factors - locus of control and type of market - failed to show any association with the level of sophistication in DBM systems. Further data analyses revealed a strong association between the elements of sophisticated OBM systems and marketing notions of sources of competitive advantage
An investigation of control strategies for batch and continuous distillation columns using a digital computer
The work undertaken has been principally concerned with the practical application of a number of control ideas to a pilot scale distillation unit. The ideas under investigation covered two main areas, namely the control of individual loops, and the choice of overall operation strategy. [Continues.

Female empowerment to improve sexual and reproductive health outcomes and prevent violence in adolescent girls and young women in Uganda: evidence reviews for policy
Background: Adolescent girls and young women in Uganda face numerous public health challenges including high HIV prevalence, teenage pregnancies, poor sexual and reproductive health rights, child marriage, and violence.
Objectives: This evidence review explores which interventions focusing on the empowerment of adolescent girls and young women to address these challenges are suitable for Ugandan policy.
Methods: We reviewed the literature to identify experimental studies and systematic reviews of interventions which improve sexual and reproductive health outcomes and/or prevent violence in adolescent girls and young women in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Two authors independently reviewed the studies identified through a comprehensive search strategy and assessed their quality. From this evidence base, two policy options were explored in depth considering benefits, harms, equity impacts, and costs, given the Ugandan context. Results: The screen yielded 47 studies, of which 12 remained after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria and relevance, applicability and quality assessment. Feasible policy options included: a vertical cash-incentive approach at a national or local level to support girls’ attainment of education; and a horizontal integrated community approach focusing on skills and knowledge building. A combination of both is recommended for young female empowerment in Uganda, allowing for the full range of socio-cultural and economic drivers to be targeted. Conclusion: Research into the link between female empowerment and sexual and reproductive health outcomes is still in early development. This review contributes to evidence on this topic and outlines an approach that is potentially suitable for adoption across similar LMICs in Africa.

Practical recommendations for radium-223 treatment of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer
is the first targeted alpha therapy for patients with castration resistant prostate cancer and symptomatic bone metastases.
Radium-223 provides a new treatment option for this setting, but also necessitates a new treatment management approach.
We provide straightforward and practical recommendations for European nuclear medicine centres to optimize radium-223 service provision.
Methods An independent research consultancy agency observed radium-223 procedures and conducted interviews with all key staff members involved in radium-223 treatment delivery in 11 nuclear medicine centres across six countries (Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland and the UK) experienced in administering radium-223. The findings
were collated and discussed at a meeting of experts from these centres, during which key consensus recommendations were defined. Results The recommendations cover centre organization and preparation; patient referral; radium-223 ordering, preparation and disposal; radium-223 treatment delivery/administration; and patient experience. Guidance includes structured coordination and communication within centres and multidisciplinary teams, focusing on sharing best practice to provide high quality, patient-centred care throughout the treatment
pathway.
Conclusions These expert recommendations are intended to complement existing management guidelines. Sharing best practice and experience will help nuclear medicine centres to optimize radium-223 service provision and improve patient care
The implications of manioc cultivation in the culture and mythology of the Machiguenga of South Eastern Peru
The aim of this thesis to effect an introduction to the place of manioc (Manihot esculenta Crantz) in the culture of the Machiguenga Indians of the Peruvian rain forest. The main substance of my work finds its focus in a myth, the narrative of which was recorded during fieldwork on location in the Urubamba region of south east Peru. My thesis will attempt to examine the role of manioc and the justification of its description as a 'sacred plant' the Machiguenga. The evidence I put forward to demonstrate the significance of manioc comes under the following headings: a) manioc cultivation and dietary uses b) manioc plant taxonomy c) the manioc myth itself, which I have transcribed and translated from my recordings. Whilst the anthropological structures of the myth are examined, no attempt will be made to deal in detail with the vocabulary and morphology of the Machiguenga language. While conceding that it is vital to show the connection between the material use of manioc and the belief structure surrounding it, material already collected would suggest a more ambitious piece of work than a Master of Philosophy degree would allow, and I hope in the future to undertake full-scale investigation into this largely untouched aspect of Machiguenga social and religious organization. The present work aims only at an introduction to the people and their use of manioc, and the presentation of the manioc myth
An automated method for mapping geomorphological expressions of former subglacial meltwater pathways (hummock corridors) from high resolution digital elevation data
Elongated tracts of hummocks or ‘hummock corridors’, exposed on palaeo-ice sheet beds, are believed to represent former subglacial meltwater pathways. Here, we present a method, coded in MATLAB, for automatically detecting and mapping hummock corridors from high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs). Initially the DEM is filtered to remove bed roughness outside the size range of hummocks. A Fast Fourier Transform is then performed to determine the dominant orientation of hummock corridors and remove misaligned features. Finally, image segmentation is used to isolate and extract the hummock corridors as a binary mask. We tested this automated approach visually and statistically against detailed manual mapping in three areas of Canada and northern Scandinavia. Results show that while the automated method does not perfectly reproduce the manual mapping, it successfully captures the general configuration, morphometry (length, width) and location of hummock corridors, despite variation in expression across and between sites. This technique is ideally suited to take advantage of newly available high-resolution digital elevation data (e.g. the ArcticDEM), whose enormous volume makes large-scale manual mapping prohibitively time consuming. Its application will enable efficient and comprehensive mapping of the spatial distribution of hummock corridors across palaeo-beds that is necessary for deriving insights into their formation and the organisation of subglacial meltwater flow beneath ice sheets
