    Rotavirus 993/83, isolated from calf faeces, closely resembles an avian rotavirus

    Polypeptides from purified virions of the calf rotavirus (RV) isolate 993/83 and those from the pigeon RV isolate PO-13 comigrated on SDS-polyacrylamide gels. Two polypeptides of 45K and 47K were detected at the position of VP6. Both proteins behaved like authentic VP6 protein with EDTA and heat treatment. RV 993/83 and PO-13 showed identical one-dimensional peptide maps for VP2, and the 45K and 47K proteins. More than 70% of sera from German cattle older than 1 year showed neutralizing serum antibodies to RV 993/83 and RV PO-1

    腎嚢胞に対する腎保存術後にみられた急性肺塞栓症の1例

    41歳男, 長年にわたる喫煙歴を有する。腎の病変に対しては楔状切除を施行したが, 病理診断は多房性嚢胞であった。肺塞栓症は術後7日目に出現し, 肺シンチグラフィーで確認された。本症例は血栓溶解療法にて軽快したA case of acute pulmonary embolism which developed one week after conservative surgery of the renal cyst is reported. He was 41 years old and had a long habit of cigarette smoking. He underwent wedge resection of the renal mass which was proved to be a multilocular renal cyst pathologically. The acute pulmonary embolism which developed on the seventh postoperative day was confirmed by lung scintigraphy. The patient recovered from the disease by thrombolytic therapy. Postoperative bed rest seemed to be closely associated with the incidence in this case. Early ambulation is recommended. In addition, the thromboprophylactic therapy may be justified in patients undergoing kidney-sparing surgery which requires postoperative bed rest

    Predominance of porcine rotavirus G9 in Japanese piglets with diarrhea: Close relationship of their VP7 genes with those of recent human G9 strains

    Type G9 of group A rotavirus (GAR) was shown to be predominant in a survey of VP7 (G) and VP4 (P) genotypes among porcine GARs associated with outbreaks of diarrhea in young pigs in Japan between 2000 and 2002. Comparison of the G9 VP7 gene sequences showed that the porcine G9 strains were more closely related to human G9 strains reemerging globally since the mid-1990s than to those from the mid-1980s. The VP7 gene sequences of porcine G9 strains from different farms were divergent (6.1 to 7.2% diference in nucleotides), suggesting that these G9 VP7 genes were not the result of recent introduction into the porcine population. Regarding the P genotype specificities of porcine G9 strains, while the majority of strains were close to unusual porcine P types (P[13] and P[23]), two strains were of the P[6] type, which has closer sequence identity with the human AU19 strain than with the porcine Gottfried strain. These unexpected results suggest that G9 GARs in the porcine population have spread more widely than previously thought and that the VP7 genes of porcine G9 strains and those of some human G9 strains detected recently may have a common progenitor.Facultad de Ciencias Veterinaria

    An Early Detection of Decline in Rotavirus Cases during the 2013/2014 Season in Japan as Revealed by Time-series Analysis of National Surveillance Data

    Rotavirus is a leading cause of severe acute gastroenteritis in children worldwide, and globally licensed vaccines are available. To expedite the introduction of rotavirus vaccines in the national immunisation programme, a simple, ecological method to monitor changes in the burden of rotavirus disease may be of great help. Here, we report an application of a time-series analysis on a publicly-available dataset in Japan on the weekly number of laboratory-confirmed rotavirus-positive samples over the last 5 year period between the 36th week of 2009 and the 35th week of 2014 during which rotavirus vaccines became marketed in Japan and presumed to reach an uptake rate of at least 39% as a national average. Compared with the expected number of rotavirus detection based on the preceding four rotavirus seasons, the number of rotavirus detection during the 2013?2014 season was 42.9% (95% CI: 38.6, 47.8). This suggests that the use of rotavirus vaccine had a positive impact on reducing the burden of rotavirus diarrhoea in Japan. This method, because of its simplicity and little cost, should be applicable to early detection of the impact of rotavirus vaccine even in resource-poor countries where the World Health Organization funded and implemented the sentinel surveillance programmes of laboratory-confirmed rotavirus cases

    Efeitos da distribuição de cátions nas propriedades estruturais de nanopartículas quaternárias de ZnxMg1-xFe2O4 e ZnxCo1-xFe2O4

    Tese (doutorado)—Universidade de Brasília, Instituto de Física, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Física, 2013.Esse trabalho dedica-se ao estudo das propriedades estruturais de nanopartículas magnéticas de ZnxMg1-xFe2O4 e ZnxCo1-xFe2O4, onde a concentração de Zn (x) foi variada (0,0 ≤ x ≤ 1,0). Ambos os conjuntos de amostras foram sintetizadas pelo método de reação de combustão. A caracterização das nanopartículas foi realizada através de Espectroscopia Raman, Espectroscopia Mössbauer, e especificamente para o sistema de zinco-cobalto, foi utilizada a Difração Ressonante de Raios-X. Foi encontrado que todas as amostras apresentam estrutura espinélio cúbica e que o parâmetro de rede cresce linearmente com o aumento do teor de Zn (x). Os dados Mössbauer mostraram que a troca dos íons Mg2+ ou Co2+ por íons de Zn2+ muda substancialmente os parâmetros hiperfinos. Contudo, a presença de íons de Fe3+ foi verificada tanto no sítio A quanto no sítio B. Os espectros Raman mostraram as cinco bandas Raman previstas para a estrutura espinélio, e foi observado o desdobramento do modo Raman A1g em três componentes, para as amostras de ZnxMg1-xFe2O4, e duas componentes para as amostras de ZnxCo1-xFe2O4. Estas componentes foram atribuídas às vibrações oxigênio-metal (Zn, Mg, Co e Fe) na posição tetraédrica. Assim, para as amostras de ZnxMg1-xFe2O4, foi possível determinar a distribuição de cátions por meio da correlação dos dados de Espectroscopia Mössbauer e Raman. Contudo, para o sistema ZnxCo1-xFe2O4 não foi possível determinar a distribuição de cátions utilizando o procedimento adotado para o sistema zinco-magnésio, uma vez que, as massas dos íons envolvidos são próximas (Zn, Co, Fe). Dessa forma, fez-se uso de outra abordagem, a utilização da Difração Ressonante de Raios-X aliado ao Método de Refinamento de Rietveld. Os resultados mostraram a presença de íons de Co2+, Zn2+ e Fe3+ em ambos os sítios cristalográficos. Como resultado desta ocupação, foi observado que, com o aumento do teor de zinco substitucional nas amostras, a distância média entre os cátions e os ânions no sítio A aumenta e no sítio B diminui. Com isto, devido ao movimento dos íons de oxigênio ao longo da direção [111], observa-se uma redução da simetria do sítio B. Explicando assim, as variações das áreas integradas e das energias vibracionais dos modos Raman observados abaixo de 600 cm-1. ______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThe aim of this thesis is the study of structural properties of magnetic nanoparticles ZnxMg1-xFe2O4 and ZnxCo1-xFe2O4, where the Zn (x) concentration was varied (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 1.0). The samples were synthesized by combustion reaction method. The characterization of the nanoparticles was performed by Raman spectroscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and for the zinc-cobalt system the Resonant X-Ray Diffraction was employed. All the samples possess a single phase cubic spinel structure and the lattice parameter increases linearly with increasing Zn-content (x). The Mössbauer data showed that the replacement of Mg2+ or Co2+ ions for Zn2+ ions changes substantially the hyperfine parameter. Moreover, it was verified the presence of Fe3+ ions both in A and B sites. The Raman spectra showed the presence of five predicted Raman bands for the spinel structure and the A1g splitting of the Raman mode into trees branches was observed, for the ZnxMg1-xFe2O4 samples and two branches for ZnxCo1-xFe2O4 samples. It was considered that these components can be attributed to vibrations oxygen-metal vibration (Zn, Mg, Co and Fe) in tetrahedral position. Thus, for ZnxMg1-xFe2O4 samples, it was possible to determine the cation distribution through the correlation of Mössbauer spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy data. However, it was not possible to assess the cation distribution of the ZnxCo1-xFe2O4 system using the procedure adopted for the zinc-magnesium system because the masses of the ions involved are quite similar (Zn, Co, Fe). Thus, another approach was chosen: Resonant X-Ray Diffraction along with the Rietveld refinement method. The results showed the presence of Co2+, Zn2+ and Fe3+ ions in both crystallographic sites. It was observed that with increasing in zinc content, the average distance between cations and anions increases in the A site and decreases in the B site. Thus, due to the movement of oxygen ions along the [111] direction, there is a symmetry reduction of the B site. This could explain the variation of the integrated areas of the Raman vibrational energy modes below 600 cm-1
