    Numerical analysis of quasinormal modes in nearly extremal Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes

    We calculate high-order quasinormal modes with large imaginary frequencies for electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations in nearly extremal Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes. Our results show that for low-order quasinormal modes, the analytical approximation formula in the extremal limit derived by Cardoso and Lemos is a quite good approximation for the quasinormal frequencies as long as the model parameter r1κ1r_1\kappa_1 is small enough, where r1r_1 and κ1\kappa_1 are the black hole horizon radius and the surface gravity, respectively. For high-order quasinormal modes, to which corresponds quasinormal frequencies with large imaginary parts, on the other hand, this formula becomes inaccurate even for small values of r1κ1r_1\kappa_1. We also find that the real parts of the quasinormal frequencies have oscillating behaviors in the limit of highly damped modes, which are similar to those observed in the case of a Reissner-Nordstr{\" o}m black hole. The amplitude of oscillating Re(ω){\rm Re(\omega)} as a function of Im(ω){\rm Im}(\omega) approaches a non-zero constant value for gravitational perturbations and zero for electromagnetic perturbations in the limit of highly damped modes, where ω\omega denotes the quasinormal frequency. This means that for gravitational perturbations, the real part of quasinormal modes of the nearly extremal Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime appears not to approach any constant value in the limit of highly damped modes. On the other hand, for electromagnetic perturbations, the real part of frequency seems to go to zero in the limit.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, to appear in Physical Review

    2α+t2\alpha+t cluster structure in 11^{11}B

    The cluster structures of the excited states in 11^{11}B are studied by analyzing the isoscalar monopole and quadrupole strengths in the 11^{11}B(dd,dd') reaction at Ed=200E_d=200 MeV. The excitation strengths are compared with the predictions by the shell-model and antisymmetrized molecular-dynamics (AMD) calculations. It is found that the large monopole strength for the 3/233/2^-_3 state at Ex=8.56E_x=8.56 MeV is well described by the AMD calculation and is an evidence for a developed 2α+t2\alpha+t cluster structure.Comment: Revised according to the referees' comment

    Thin Ice Target for 16^{16}O(p,p') experiment

    A windowless and self-supporting ice target is described. An ice sheet with a thickness of 29.7 mg/cm2^2 cooled by liquid nitrogen was placed at the target position of a magnetic spectrometer and worked stably in the 16^{16}O(p,p)(p,p') experiment at Ep=392E_{p}=392 MeV.     Direct proton decay of the isoscalar giant dipole resonance in 208Pb

    The excitation and subsequent proton decay of the isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) in 208^{208}Pb have been investigated via the 208^{208}Pb(α,αp)207\alpha, \alpha^{\prime}p)^{207}Tl reaction at 400 MeV. Excitation of the ISGDR has been identified by the difference-of-spectra method. The enhancement of the ISGDR strength at high excitation energies observed in the multipole-decomposition-analysis of the singles 208^{208}Pb(α,α\alpha,\alpha^{\prime}) spectra is not present in the excitation energy spectrum obtained in coincidence measurement. The partial branching ratios for direct proton decay of ISGDR to low-lying states of 207^{207}Tl have been determined and the results are compared with predictions of continuum random-phase-approximation (CRPA) calculations.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in Physics Letters

    A multi-targeted approach to suppress tumor-promoting inflammation

    Cancers harbor significant genetic heterogeneity and patterns of relapse following many therapies are due to evolved resistance to treatment. While efforts have been made to combine targeted therapies, significant levels of toxicity have stymied efforts to effectively treat cancer with multi-drug combinations using currently approved therapeutics. We discuss the relationship between tumor-promoting inflammation and cancer as part of a larger effort to develop a broad-spectrum therapeutic approach aimed at a wide range of targets to address this heterogeneity. Specifically, macrophage migration inhibitory factor, cyclooxygenase-2, transcription factor nuclear factor-κB, tumor necrosis factor alpha, inducible nitric oxide synthase, protein kinase B, and CXC chemokines are reviewed as important antiinflammatory targets while curcumin, resveratrol, epigallocatechin gallate, genistein, lycopene, and anthocyanins are reviewed as low-cost, low toxicity means by which these targets might all be reached simultaneously. Future translational work will need to assess the resulting synergies of rationally designed antiinflammatory mixtures (employing low-toxicity constituents), and then combine this with similar approaches targeting the most important pathways across the range of cancer hallmark phenotypes

    First experimental determination of the radiative-decay probability of the 31− state in ¹²C for estimating the triple alpha reaction rate in high temperature environments

    The triple alpha reaction is one of the most important reactions in the nuclear astrophysics. However, its reaction rate in high temperature environments at T₉>2 was still uncertain. One of the major origins of the uncertainty was that the radiative-decay probability of the 3⁻₁ state in ¹²C was unknown. In the present work, we have determined the radiative-decay probability of the 3⁻₁ state to be 1.3[+1.2][-1.1] × 10⁻⁶ by measuring the ¹H(¹²C, ¹²Cp) reaction for the first time, and derived the triple alpha reaction rate in high temperature environments from the measured radiative-decay probability. The present result suggests that the 3⁻₁ state noticeably enhances the triple alpha reaction rate although the contribution from the 3⁻₁ state had been assumed to be small

    Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

    This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw > 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables, revised author list, matches European Journal of Physics C versio

    Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS

    The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes.     Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a significant distance from their production point into a final state containing charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the neutralino lifetime.     Measurement of the inclusive isolated prompt photon cross-section in pp collisions at sqrt(s)= 7 TeV using 35 pb-1 of ATLAS data

    A measurement of the differential cross-section for the inclusive production of isolated prompt photons in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is presented. The measurement covers the pseudorapidity ranges |eta|<1.37 and 1.52<=|eta|<2.37 in the transverse energy range 45<=E_T<400GeV. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 35 pb-1, collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The yields of the signal photons are measured using a data-driven technique, based on the observed distribution of the hadronic energy in a narrow cone around the photon candidate and the photon selection criteria. The results are compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations and found to be in good agreement over four orders of magnitude in cross-section.Comment: 7 pages plus author list (18 pages total), 2 figures, 4 tables, final version published in Physics Letters
