Magnetohydrodynamics in Superconducting-Superfluid Neutron Stars
MHD equations are presented for the mixture of superfluid neutrons,
superconducting protons, and normal electrons believed to exist in the outer
cores of neutron stars. The dissipative effects of electron viscosity and
mutual friction due to electron-vortex scattering are also included. It is
shown that Alfven waves are replaced by cyclotron- vortex waves that have not
been previously derived from MHD theory. The cyclotron- vortex waves are
analogous to Alfven waves with the tension due to the magnetic energy density
replaced by the vortex energy density. The equations are then put into a
simplified form useful for studying the effects of the interior magnetic field
on the dynamics. Of particular interest is the crust-core coupling time which
can be inferred from pulsar glitch observations. The hypothesis that
cyclotron-vortex waves play a significant role in the core spin-up during a
glitch is used to place limits on the interior magnetic field. The results are
compared with those of other studies.Comment: 11 pages, requires MN plain TeX macros, to appear in MNRAS. Sec. 6

Science objectives in the lunar base advocacy
The author considers the potential function of astronomy in planning for a lunar base during the 21st century. He is one of the leading advocates for a permanent settlement on the Moon and has given considerable thought to the possible impact of such a station on science. He considers the rationale for a lunar base, research on the Moon, and the definition of science objectives
The Social Economy: Approaches, Practices and a Proposal for a New Community-University Alliance (CURA)
This document provides an overview of selected theoretical and empirical approaches to define a research proposal for a new CURA (Community- University Research Alliance) on the social economy to be launched in 2005. The authorsâ goal is also to spark the interest of researchers in the social economy. With this in mind, the first section represents an attempt to provide a theoretical and empirical framework for the social economy, drawing on complementary concepts such as the third sector, where appropriate. In the second section, we emphasize the need for an inventory of innovative practices in the field and for statistics to quantify the activities of the social economy and the resources involved. In the third section, we identify the main research directions and questions based not only on our own knowledge but also on a review of the literature. In the final section, we make some suggestions as to how the specific nature of this new program will relate to the existing CURA program.Institutional and Behavioral Economics,
Report of the In Situ Resources Utilization Workshop
The results of a workshop of 50 representatives from the public and private sector which investigated the potential joint development of the key technologies and mechanisms that will enable the permanent habitation of space are presented. The workshop is an initial step to develop a joint public/private assessment of new technology requirements of future space options, to share knowledge on required technologies that may exist in the private sector, and to investigate potential joint technology development opportunities. The majority of the material was produced in 5 working groups: (1) Construction, Assembly, Automation and Robotics; (2) Prospecting, Mining, and Surface Transportation; (3) Biosystems and Life Support; (4) Materials Processing; and (5) Innovative Ventures. In addition to the results of the working groups, preliminary technology development recommendations to assist in near-term development priority decisions are presented. Finally, steps are outlined for potential new future activities and relationships among the public, private, and academic sectors
Future Astronomical Observatories on the Moon
Papers at a workshop which consider the topic astronomical observations from a lunar base are presented. In part 1, the rationale for performing astronomy on the Moon is established and economic factors are considered. Part 2 includes concepts for individual lunar based telescopes at the shortest X-ray and gamma ray wavelengths, for high energy cosmic rays, and at optical and infrared wavelengths. Lunar radio frequency telescopes are considered in part 3, and engineering considerations for lunar base observatories are discussed in part 4. Throughout, advantages and disadvantages of lunar basing compared to terrestrial and orbital basing of observatories are weighted. The participants concluded that the Moon is very possibly the best location within the inner solar system from which to perform front-line astronomical research

On the behaviour of fuse wires
"Thesis for the degree of Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering."Typescript.1 illustration pasted in.Includes bibliographical references. The last few decades have witnessed the introduction of electricity as a factor of everyday life in its use as a source of light, power and heat. The dangers of fire breaking out, or the damaging of machines or other apparatus by an unexpected rush of excessive current, have demanded the immediate use of protective means to interrupt the current before it becomes higher than the current capacity of the circuit. The earlier forms of the so called "cut outs" were fuse wires, whose current carrying capacity was, or at least was supposed to be, equal to that of the circuit, but which would fuse and consequently open the circuit at the smallest excess of current above the normal load. Various other forms, like the magnetic circuit breaker, have subsequently come into use, but they are restricted mainly to guard against short circuits, while the ordinary fuse wire is still and will be used to open the circuit when the current exceeds the carrying capacity of the line.Digitized at the University of Missouri--Columbia MU Libraries Digitization Lab in 2011
Using generalized PowerFlux methods to estimate the parameters of periodic gravitational waves
We investigate methods to estimate the parameters of the gravitational-wave
signal from a spinning neutron star using Fourier transformed segments of the
strain response from an interferometric detector. Estimating the parameters
from the power, we find generalizations of the PowerFlux method. Using
simulated elliptically polarized signals injected into Gaussian noise, we apply
the generalized methods to estimate the squared amplitudes of the plus and
cross polarizations (and, in the most general case, the polarization angle),
and test the relative detection efficiencies of the various methods.Comment: 8 pages, presented at Amalid7, Sydney, Australia (July 2007), fixed
