Social Construction, Policy Design, and Program Efficacy in the U.S. Navy\u27s Family Readiness Group Program
It was unclear what the actual role of the Family Readiness Group (FRG) was in helping the spouses of U.S. Navy submariners (SMSs) in learning to live the submariner-family lifestyle. Submarines deploy in regular cycles regardless of world conflict. Submariners and their spouses are isolated from each other during deployments, communities of submariner spouses are smaller than other Navy communities, and spouses must acquire unique social capital to manage unique challenges. The purpose of this study was to explore how SMSs experience or perceive the FRG role in their social construction and adaptation to the SMS lifestyle. The examination was guided by Ingram, Schneider, and DeLeon\u27s social construction and policy design theory. Data were collected using an open-ended survey distributed to 83 SMSs through an online survey platform. Data were coded for themes and subthemes using an iterative process including values and process coding. Key results were that SMSs construct themselves differently than how they are constructed by policy principals. Among SMSs, benefits and burdens perceived to be distributed by the FRG program are different than the distribution of actual benefits and burdens. These differences influenced participants\u27 engagement with the FRG program. More research is needed to define this influence and to explore the origins of relationships that increase lifestyle capital. The implication for social change is that a better understanding of the nature of SMS lifestyles can contribute to better policy decisions and improved program design, leading to better outcomes for military spouses
Prediction of Purchase Behaviors Based on Customer Demand Value Using Factorization Machines
This study focuses on Integrated Marketing Communication which is an important factor of Customer Relationship Management. The purpose of this study is to compare the customer sales data of two different types of stores in the confectionery industry, using the framework which is āSources of Communication Messages in a Relationshipā. In addition, this study proposes the method to categorize the customerās pursuit values for each store based on sales data. And also this paper proposes the new approach that can promote sales while increasing the value of usage in customersā living, based on devising a method to improve the efficiency of customer direct mail delivery, using Factorization Machines. The result shows the value that customers desire in each two shops is different from not only on-site investigation but also customer sales data. Furthermore, a customer demand value is defined in this study, the customer direct mail delivery is established to combine customer demand value with the result of purchase behavior prediction using Factorization Machines, makes that the value of usage in customersā living increase and sales promote
Physical Therapy in Patients with Cancer
Physical therapists often treat cancer patients. Cancer treatment includes chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery, which are being continuously developed and thus increase survival of patients with each cancer diagnosis. More specifically, 5-year survival rates increase with each cancer diagnosis. Cancer patients have many problems including muscle weakness, pulmonary dysfunction, fatigue, and pain. In the end, patients with cancer tend to have a decline in activities of daily living (ADL) and quality of life (QOL). Additionally, cancer patients often have progressive disease, depression, and anxiety. Physical therapy often helps patients regain strength and physical function and improve their QOL and independence of daily living that they may have lost due to cancer or its treatment. Physical therapy has an important role in increasing physical function of cancer patients, cancer survivors, and children with cancer. In the future, physical therapy may be progressively needed for management of cancer patients
Postwar reconstruction and the questions of popular housing provision, 1939-1951 : the debates and implementation of policy, with particular reference to Coventry and Portsmouth
The existing historiography has done much to highlight the
significance of the 1940s in the evolution of social policy
in Great Britain. This thesis is an attempt to assess
whether there was a new departure in popular housing
provision in this period. It deals with the housing debate
during the Second World War and examines its impact on the
implementation of housing policy under the 1945 Labour
Government. It explores the views of housing experts and
politicians, as well as those of the public on various
aspects of housing during the war and considers how they
were reflected in the formulation of postwar housing policy.
It also looks at the ways in which the policy was
implemented at local level between 1945 and 1951. A central
aim of this thesis is to examine the role and influence of
architects and planners both in the process of moulding
policy and in the actual practice of providing houses. This
thesis will argue that despite the impact of the war which
opened up fresh possibilities for applying new ideas in
popular housing provision, the influence of these experts
were very much circumscribed by the difficult economic
circumstances of the late 1940s and by the existence of
conservative, anti-planning forces in society
A Study On The Relationships Between Software Engineering Capabilities And Business Performance Of Japanese It Firms Through Longitudinal Modeling
This study aims at better understanding the long-term relationships among the software engineering capabilities and business performance of the representative IT firms in Japan. We conducted longitudinal analyses on standardized software engineering capability scores of three surveys and ten-year business performance from 151 firms. Through panel analyses of the best Akaike Information Criteria model, we found that IT firms maintaining high levels of deliverables, derived from high levels of human development, quality assurance, project management and process improvement, tend to sustain high profitability, while IT firms with high levels of project management and customer contact tend to be highly productive and increasingly improve the productivity in the long-term. Concerning business performance, profitable IT firms tend to be stable and this tendency accelerates progressively due to the enhancement of deliverables and R&D. However, productive IT firms are not necessarily profitable likely because of the multi-layered industry structure in Japan
Connecting the Last Mile: The Role of Communications in the Great East Japan Earthquake
This report, set against the backdrop of a highly developed communications infrastructure, highlights the specific role that communications played in both survival and recovery in the hours, days, weeks and months after the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred. It does not focus on the handling of information related to the Fukushima nuclear disaster by the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) and the Japanese Government, as this issue - however important - has already received great attention.Connecting the Last Mile explores, rather, how communities in the most devastated areas of the prefectures of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima got their information. It identifies which communications channels were used before, during and after the earthquake and tsunami, and it attempts to answer a central question: what are the lessons learned about communications with disaster-affected populations from the megadisaster, not only for Japan but for the international community of humanitarian responders
