Clinical effect of IRT-5 probiotics on immune modulation of autoimmunity or alloimmunity in the eye
Background: Although the relation of the gut microbiota to a development of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases has been investigated in various animal models, there are limited studies that evaluate the effect of probiotics in the autoimmune eye disease. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effect of IRT-5 probiotics consisting of Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus reuteri, Bifidobacterium bifidum, and Streptococcus thermophilus on the autoimmunity of uveitis and dry eye and alloimmunity of corneal transplantation. Methods: Experimental autoimmune uveitis was induced by subcutaneous immunization with interphotoreceptor-binding protein and intraperitoneal injection of pertussis toxin in C57BL/6 (B6) mice. For an autoimmune dry eye model, 12-weeks-old NOD.B10.H2b mice were used. Donor cornea of B6 mice was transplanted into BALB/C mice. IRT-5 probiotics or phosphate buffered saline (PBS) were administered for three weeks immediately after induction of uveitis or transplantation. The inflammation score of the retinal tissues, dry eye manifestations (corneal staining and tear secretion), and graft survival were measured in each model. The changes of T cells were evaluated in drainage lymph nodes using fluorescence-activated cell sorting. Results: Retinal histology score in IRT-5 group of uveitis was lower than that in PBS group (p = 0.045). Ocular staining score was lower (p < 0.0001) and tear secretion was higher (p < 0.0001) in the IRT-5 group of NOD.B10.H2b mice than that in the PBS group. However, the graft survival in the IRT-5 group was not different from those of PBS group. The percentage of regulatory T cells was increased in the IRT-5-treated dry eye models (p = 0.032). The percentage of CD8+IL-17hi (p = 0.027) and CD8+ interferon gamma (IFN)hi cells (p = 0.022) were significantly decreased in the IRT-5-treated uveitis models and the percentage of CD8+IFNhi cells was markedly reduced (p = 0.036) in IRT-5-treated dry eye model. Conclusion: Our results suggest that administration of IRT-5 probiotics may modulate clinical manifestations of autoimmunity in the eye, but not on alloimmunity of corneal transplantation. ? 2017 by the authors.112Nsciescopu
Hawking Temperature in Taub-NUT (A)dS spaces via the Generalized Uncertainty Principle
Using the extended forms of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle from string
theory and the quantum gravity theory, we drived Hawking temperature of a
Taub-Nut-(A)dS black hole. In spite of their distinctive natures such as
asymptotically locally flat and breakdown of the area theorem of the horizon
for the black holes, we show that the corrections to Hawking temperature by the
generalized versions of the the Heisenberg uncertainty principle increases like
the Schwarzschild-(A)dS black hole and give the reason why the Taub-Nut-(A)dS
metric may have AdS/CFT dual picture.Comment: version published in General Relativity and Gravitatio
Long-distant contribution and radiative decays to light vector meson
The discrepancy between the PQCD calculation and the CLEO data for
() stimulates our interest in
exploring extra mechanism of decay. In this work, we apply an
important non-perturbative QCD effect, i.e., hadronic loop mechanism, to study
radiative decay. Our numerical result shows that the
theoretical results including the hadronic loop contribution and the PQCD
calculation of are consistent with the corresponding
CLEO data of . We expect further experimental
measurement of at BES-III, which will be helpful to
test the hadronic loop effect on decay.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures. Accepted for publication in Eur. Phys. J.
Shrinking a large dataset to identify variables associated with increased risk of Plasmodium falciparum infection in Western Kenya
Large datasets are often not amenable to analysis using traditional single-step approaches. Here, our general objective was to apply imputation techniques, principal component analysis (PCA), elastic net and generalized linear models to a large dataset in a systematic approach to extract the most meaningful predictors for a health outcome. We extracted predictors for Plasmodium falciparum infection, from a large covariate dataset while facing limited numbers of observations, using data from the People, Animals, and their Zoonoses (PAZ) project to demonstrate these techniques: data collected from 415 homesteads in western Kenya, contained over 1500 variables that describe the health, environment, and social factors of the humans, livestock, and the homesteads in which they reside. The wide, sparse dataset was simplified to 42 predictors of P. falciparum malaria infection and wealth rankings were produced for all homesteads. The 42 predictors make biological sense and are supported by previous studies. This systematic data-mining approach we used would make many large datasets more manageable and informative for decision-making processes and health policy prioritization
Observation of Orbitally Excited B_s Mesons
We report the first observation of two narrow resonances consistent with
states of orbitally excited (L=1) B_s mesons using 1 fb^{-1} of ppbar
collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the
Fermilab Tevatron. We use two-body decays into K^- and B^+ mesons reconstructed
as B^+ \to J/\psi K^+, J/\psi \to \mu^+ \mu^- or B^+ \to \bar{D}^0 \pi^+,
\bar{D}^0 \to K^+ \pi^-. We deduce the masses of the two states to be m(B_{s1})
= 5829.4 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2 and m(B_{s2}^*) = 5839.7 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2.Comment: Version accepted and published by Phys. Rev. Let
Measurement of Mass and Width of the W Boson at LEP
We report on measurements of the mass and total decay width of the W boson
with the L3 detector at LEP. W-pair events produced in
interactions between 161 GeV and 183 GeV centre-of-mass energy are selected in
a data sample corresponding to a total luminosity of 76.7 pb. Combining
all final states in W-pair production, the mass and total decay width of the W
boson are determined to be GeV and
GeV, respectively
Search for Heavy Neutral and Charged Leptons in ee Annihilation at = 183 and 189 GeV
A search for unstable neutral and charged heavy leptons as well as for stable
charged heavy leptons is performed at center-of-mass energies = 183
and 189 GeV with the L3 detector at LEP. No evidence for their existence is
found. We exclude neutral heavy leptons which couple to the electron, muon or
tau family, of the Dirac type for masses below 92.4, 93.3 and 83.3 GeV, and of
the Majorana type for masses below 81.8, 84.1 and 73.5 GeV, respectively. We
exclude unstable charged heavy leptons for masses below 93.9 GeV for a wide
range of the associated neutral heavy lepton mass. If the unstable charged
heavy lepton decays to a light neutrino, we exclude masses below 92.4 GeV. The
production of stable charged heavy leptons with mass less than 93.5 GeV is also
excluded
Measurement of an Elongation of the Pion Source in Z Decays
We measure Bose-Einstein correlations between like-sign charged pion pairs in
hadronic Z decays with the L3 detector at LEP. The analysis is performed in
three dimensions in the longitudinal center-of-mass system. The pion source is
found to be elongated along the thrust axis with a ratio of transverse to
longitudinal radius of
Measurement of the Bottom-Strange Meson Mixing Phase in the Full CDF Data Set
We report a measurement of the bottom-strange meson mixing phase \beta_s
using the time evolution of B0_s -> J/\psi (->\mu+\mu-) \phi (-> K+ K-) decays
in which the quark-flavor content of the bottom-strange meson is identified at
production. This measurement uses the full data set of proton-antiproton
collisions at sqrt(s)= 1.96 TeV collected by the Collider Detector experiment
at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to 9.6 fb-1 of integrated luminosity.
We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of \beta_s and the
B0_s decay-width difference \Delta\Gamma_s, and measure \beta_s in [-\pi/2,
-1.51] U [-0.06, 0.30] U [1.26, \pi/2] at the 68% confidence level, in
agreement with the standard model expectation. Assuming the standard model
value of \beta_s, we also determine \Delta\Gamma_s = 0.068 +- 0.026 (stat) +-
0.009 (syst) ps-1 and the mean B0_s lifetime, \tau_s = 1.528 +- 0.019 (stat) +-
0.009 (syst) ps, which are consistent and competitive with determinations by
other experiments.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, Phys. Rev. Lett 109, 171802 (2012
