Structure of a seeded palladium nanoparticle and its dynamics during the hydride phase transformation
Palladium absorbs large volumetric quantities of hydrogen at room temperature and ambient pressure, making the palladium hydride system a promising candidate for hydrogen storage. Here, we use Bragg coherent diffraction imaging to map the strain associated with defects in three dimensions before and during the hydride phase transformation of an individual octahedral palladium nanoparticle, synthesized using a seed-mediated approach. The displacement distribution imaging unveils the location of the seed nanoparticle in the final nanocrystal. By comparing our experimental results with a finite-element model, we verify that the seed nanoparticle causes a characteristic displacement distribution of the larger nanocrystal. During the hydrogen exposure, the hydride phase is predominantly formed on one tip of the octahedra, where there is a high number of lower coordinated Pd atoms. Our experimental and theoretical results provide an unambiguous method for future structure optimization of seed-mediated nanoparticle growth and in the design of palladium-based hydrogen storage systems
Simple Systematic Synthesis of Periodic Mesoporous Organosilica Nanoparticles with Adjustable Aspect Ratios
One-dimensional periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) nanoparticles with tunable aspect ratios are obtained from a chain-type molecular precursor octaethoxy-1,3,5-trisilapentane. The aspect ratio can be tuned from 2:1 to >20:1 simply by variation in the precursor concentration in acidic aqueous solutions containing constant amounts of triblock copolymer Pluronic P123. The mesochannels are highly ordered and are oriented parallel to the longitudinal axis of the PMO particles. No significant SiâC bond cleavage occurs during the synthesis according to29Si MAS NMR. The materials exhibit surface areas between 181 and 936 m2 gâ1
Measurement of the Bottom-Strange Meson Mixing Phase in the Full CDF Data Set
We report a measurement of the bottom-strange meson mixing phase \beta_s
using the time evolution of B0_s -> J/\psi (->\mu+\mu-) \phi (-> K+ K-) decays
in which the quark-flavor content of the bottom-strange meson is identified at
production. This measurement uses the full data set of proton-antiproton
collisions at sqrt(s)= 1.96 TeV collected by the Collider Detector experiment
at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to 9.6 fb-1 of integrated luminosity.
We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of \beta_s and the
B0_s decay-width difference \Delta\Gamma_s, and measure \beta_s in [-\pi/2,
-1.51] U [-0.06, 0.30] U [1.26, \pi/2] at the 68% confidence level, in
agreement with the standard model expectation. Assuming the standard model
value of \beta_s, we also determine \Delta\Gamma_s = 0.068 +- 0.026 (stat) +-
0.009 (syst) ps-1 and the mean B0_s lifetime, \tau_s = 1.528 +- 0.019 (stat) +-
0.009 (syst) ps, which are consistent and competitive with determinations by

Performance of the CMS Cathode Strip Chambers with Cosmic Rays
The Cathode Strip Chambers (CSCs) constitute the primary muon tracking device
in the CMS endcaps. Their performance has been evaluated using data taken
during a cosmic ray run in fall 2008. Measured noise levels are low, with the
number of noisy channels well below 1%. Coordinate resolution was measured for
all types of chambers, and fall in the range 47 microns to 243 microns. The
efficiencies for local charged track triggers, for hit and for segments
reconstruction were measured, and are above 99%. The timing resolution per
layer is approximately 5 ns

Grammaticality judgment of Chinese and English sentences by native speakers of alphasyllabary: a reaction time study
A group of 118 sixteen-year-old students of ethnic Indian and Pakistani origin, learning school Chinese, judged on-line the grammaticality of 18 pairs of sentences in Chinese and English. We hypothesized: (a) The students might not perform worse in simple Chinese sentence processing as compared with equivalent English sentences. (b) There would be an overall school effect as proxy for learning experience. (c) Grammatically correct sentences would be processed more efficiently than anomalous ones. MANCOVA (age as covariate) and efficiency indices, by taking into account both accuracy and reaction time, support the hypotheses. Catalytic properties of Pt cluster-decorated CeO2 nanostructures
Uniform clusters of Pt have been deposited on the surface of capping-agent-free CeO 2 nanooctahedra and nanorods using electron beam (e-beam) evaporation. The coverage of the Pt nanocluster layer can be controlled by adjusting the e-beam evaporation time. The resulting e-beam evaporated Pt nanocluster layers on the CeO 2 surfaces have a clean surface and clean interface between Pt and CeO 2. Different growth behaviors of Pt on the two types of CeO 2 nanocrystals were observed, with epitaxial growth of Pt on CeO 2 nanooctahedra and random growth of Pt on CeO 2 nanorods. The structures of the Pt clusters on the two different types of CeO 2 nanocrystals have been studied and compared by using them as catalysts for model reactions. The results of hydrogenation reactions clearly showed the clean and similar chemical surface of the Pt clusters in both catalysts. The support-dependent activity of these catalysts was demonstrated by CO oxidation. The Pt/CeO 2 nanorods showed much higher activity compared with Pt/CeO 2 nanooctahedra because of the higher concentration of oxygen vacancies in the CeO 2 nanorods. The structure-dependent selectivity of dehydrogenation reactions indicates that the structures of the Pt on CeO 2 nanorods and nanooctahedra are different. Thes differences arise because the metal deposition behaviors are modulated by the strong metal-metal oxide interactions.
