    Assessment of pollen rewards by foraging bees

The final version is available from Wiley via the DOI in this record.The removal of pollen by flower-visiting insects is costly to plants, not only in terms of production, but also via lost reproductive potential. Modern angiosperms have evolved various reward strategies to limit these costs, yet many plant species still offer pollen as a sole or major reward for pollinating insects. 2. The benefits plants gain by offering pollen as a reward for pollinating are defined by the behaviour of their pollinators, some of which feed on the pollen at the flower, while others collect pollen to provision offspring. 3. We explore how pollen impacts on the behaviour and foraging decisions of pollen-collecting bees, drawing comparisons with what is known for nectar rewards. This question is of particular interest since foraging bees typically do not ingest pollen during collection, meaning the sensory pathways involved in evaluating this resource are not immediately obvious. 4. Previous research focussed on whether foraging bees can determine the quality of pollen sources offered by different plant species, and attempted to infer the mechanisms underpinning such evaluations, mainly through observations of collection preferences in the field 5. More recent experimental research has started to focus on if pollen itself can mediate the detection of, and learning about, pollen sources and associated floral cues. 6. We review advancements in the understanding of how bees forage for pollen and respond to variation in pollen quality, and discuss future directions for studying how this ancestral floral food reward shapes the behaviour of pollinating insects

    Learning from text-based close call data

    A key feature of big data is the variety of data sources that are available; which include not just numerical data but also image or video data or even free text. The GB railways collects a large volume of free text data daily from railway workers describing close call hazard reports: instances where an accident could have – but did not – occur. These close call reports contain valuable safety information which could be useful in managing safety on the railway, but which can be lost in the very large volume of data – much larger than is viable for a human analyst to read. This paper describes the application of rudimentary natural language processing (NLP) techniques to uncover safety information from close calls. The analysis has proven that basic information extraction is possible using the rudimentary techniques, but has also identified some limitations that arise using only basic techniques. Using these findings further research in this area intends to look at how the techniques that have been proven to date can be improved with the use of more advanced NLP techniques coupled with machine-learning

    Initial-State Interactions in the Unpolarized Drell-Yan Process

    We show that initial-state interactions contribute to the cos2ϕ\cos 2 \phi distribution in unpolarized Drell-Yan lepton pair production ppp p and ppˉ+X p \bar p \to \ell^+ \ell^- X, without suppression. The asymmetry is expressed as a product of chiral-odd distributions h1(x1,p2)×hˉ1(x2,k2)h_1^\perp(x_1,\bm{p}_\perp^2)\times \bar h_1^\perp(x_2,\bm{k}_\perp^2) , where the quark-transversity function h1(x,p2)h_1^\perp(x,\bm{p}_\perp^2) is the transverse momentum dependent, light-cone momentum distribution of transversely polarized quarks in an {\it unpolarized} proton. We compute this (naive) TT-odd and chiral-odd distribution function and the resulting cos2ϕ\cos 2 \phi asymmetry explicitly in a quark-scalar diquark model for the proton with initial-state gluon interaction. In this model the function h1(x,p2)h_1^\perp(x,\bm{p}_\perp^2) equals the TT-odd (chiral-even) Sivers effect function f1T(x,p2)f^\perp_{1T}(x,\bm{p}_\perp^2). This suggests that the single-spin asymmetries in the SIDIS and the Drell-Yan process are closely related to the cos2ϕ\cos 2 \phi asymmetry of the unpolarized Drell-Yan process, since all can arise from the same underlying mechanism. This provides new insight regarding the role of quark and gluon orbital angular momentum as well as that of initial- and final-state gluon exchange interactions in hard QCD processes.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figure

    Investigating the origins of transverse spin asymmetries at RHIC

    We discuss possible origins of transverse spin asymmetries in hadron-hadron collisions and propose an explanation in terms of a chiral-odd T-odd distribution function with intrinsic transverse momentum dependence, which would signal a correlation between the transverse spin and the transverse momentum of quarks inside an unpolarized hadron. We will argue that despite its conceptual problems, it can account for single spin asymmetries, for example in p + p(transversely polarized) -> pion + X, and at the same time for the large cos(2 phi) asymmetry in the unpolarized Drell-Yan cross section, which still lacks understanding. We use the latter asymmetry to arrive at a crude model for this function and show explicitly how it relates unpolarized and polarized observables in the Drell-Yan process, as could be measured with the proton-proton collisions at RHIC. Moreover, it would provide an alternative method of accessing the transversity distribution function h_1. For future reference we also list the complete set of azimuthal asymmetries in the unpolarized and polarized Drell-Yan process at leading order involving T-odd distribution functions with intrinsic transverse momentum dependence.Comment: 14 pages, Revtex, 4 Postscript figures, uses aps.sty, epsf.sty, Minor mistakes in cross sections corrected, Conclusions are unaffecte

    Angular Distributions of Drell-Yan Lepton Pairs at the Tevatron: Order αs2\alpha_s^2 Corrections and Monte Carlo Studies

    We investigate the angular distribution of the lepton pair in the process ppˉγ+X++Xp \bar{p} \rightarrow \gamma^{\ast} + X \rightarrow \ell^+\ell^- + X, where the virtual photon is produced at high transverse momentum. The angular distribution of the leptons is very sensitive to possible nonperturbative effects, such as a nontrivial vacuum structure of QCD, and offers a good chance to test such effects. We present complete O(αs2){\cal O}(\alpha_s^2) calculations of the decay lepton distributions in the lepton pair rest frame. An order O(αs){\cal O}(\alpha_s) Monte Carlo study of the lepton angular distributions, with acceptance cuts and energy resolution smearing applied to the leptons, is also presented.Comment: 26 pages (Revtex) plus 9 (uuencoded) postscript figures available as a compressed tar file at ftp://phenom.physics.wisc.edu/pub/preprints/madph-94-857-figs.tar.

    Shrinking a large dataset to identify variables associated with increased risk of Plasmodium falciparum infection in Western Kenya

    Large datasets are often not amenable to analysis using traditional single-step approaches. Here, our general objective was to apply imputation techniques, principal component analysis (PCA), elastic net and generalized linear models to a large dataset in a systematic approach to extract the most meaningful predictors for a health outcome. We extracted predictors for Plasmodium falciparum infection, from a large covariate dataset while facing limited numbers of observations, using data from the People, Animals, and their Zoonoses (PAZ) project to demonstrate these techniques: data collected from 415 homesteads in western Kenya, contained over 1500 variables that describe the health, environment, and social factors of the humans, livestock, and the homesteads in which they reside. The wide, sparse dataset was simplified to 42 predictors of P. falciparum malaria infection and wealth rankings were produced for all homesteads. The 42 predictors make biological sense and are supported by previous studies. This systematic data-mining approach we used would make many large datasets more manageable and informative for decision-making processes and health policy prioritization

    Global Search for New Physics with 2.0/fb at CDF

    Data collected in Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron are searched for indications of new electroweak-scale physics. Rather than focusing on particular new physics scenarios, CDF data are analyzed for discrepancies with the standard model prediction. A model-independent approach (Vista) considers gross features of the data, and is sensitive to new large cross-section physics. Further sensitivity to new physics is provided by two additional algorithms: a Bump Hunter searches invariant mass distributions for "bumps" that could indicate resonant production of new particles; and the Sleuth procedure scans for data excesses at large summed transverse momentum. This combined global search for new physics in 2.0/fb of ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV reveals no indication of physics beyond the standard model.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures.     Observation of Orbitally Excited B_s Mesons

    We report the first observation of two narrow resonances consistent with states of orbitally excited (L=1) B_s mesons using 1 fb^{-1} of ppbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We use two-body decays into K^- and B^+ mesons reconstructed as B^+ \to J/\psi K^+, J/\psi \to \mu^+ \mu^- or B^+ \to \bar{D}^0 \pi^+, \bar{D}^0 \to K^+ \pi^-. We deduce the masses of the two states to be m(B_{s1}) = 5829.4 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2 and m(B_{s2}^*) = 5839.7 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2.Comment: Version accepted and published by Phys. Rev. Let

    Measurement of the Bottom-Strange Meson Mixing Phase in the Full CDF Data Set

    We report a measurement of the bottom-strange meson mixing phase \beta_s using the time evolution of B0_s -> J/\psi (->\mu+\mu-) \phi (-> K+ K-) decays in which the quark-flavor content of the bottom-strange meson is identified at production. This measurement uses the full data set of proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt(s)= 1.96 TeV collected by the Collider Detector experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to 9.6 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of \beta_s and the B0_s decay-width difference \Delta\Gamma_s, and measure \beta_s in [-\pi/2, -1.51] U [-0.06, 0.30] U [1.26, \pi/2] at the 68% confidence level, in agreement with the standard model expectation. Assuming the standard model value of \beta_s, we also determine \Delta\Gamma_s = 0.068 +- 0.026 (stat) +- 0.009 (syst) ps-1 and the mean B0_s lifetime, \tau_s = 1.528 +- 0.019 (stat) +- 0.009 (syst) ps, which are consistent and competitive with determinations by other experiments.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, Phys.
