A Roma. This project was born in the aftermath of HH Lim's car accident which occurred on the highway on March 26th in 2005, while he was on his way from Rome to Naples for the opening of the inaugural exhibition of the PAN - Palazzo delle Arti di Napoli, The Giving Person. Il dono dell'artista, curated by Lóránd Hegyi, invited by the artist Yan Pei Ming who had visited Lim's exhibition at Fondazione Volume! in Rome a few days earlier. Despite the severity of the accident, Lim was unharmed and decided to proceed his journey abandoning the destroyed car on the side of the highway. The project was inspired by a series of events that occurred before the departure and during the trip, as well as a work of art by his friend Yan Pei Ming on display in the exhibition - a large red figure of a Buddha, similar to the one Lim has always been wearing on his neck - and ultimately the death of the pope a few days later. The project was never actually developed as it remained a mere thought, an idea the artist had. Lim imagined a large public exhibition to thank the Pope: the work would have consisted of a series of montages made using Photoshop, showing some drawings of Lim – linked to the series of Words - superimposed on the front pages of the newspapers and posted during the funeral of Wojtyla, which took place on April 8th 2005 in the St. Peter's Square

A comparative study of conventional PID and intelligent Fuzzy-PID FordDC motor speed control

    Get PDF
The development of a Self Tuning Fuzzy proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller was done to be compared with the conventional controller that is being used in a direct current (DC) motor. Simulation study is used to overcome the appearance of nonlinearities and uncertainties in the system with the proposed controller for the armature voltage controlled DC motors. Each parameter of the Fuzzy-PID controller is self tuned using 49 fuzzy rules in the fuzzy logic controller. The proportional, integral and derivative (KP,KI,KD) gains of the PID controller is being tuned by the controller. Different types of membership functions are evaluated in the fuzzy control and the best performance will be used in Fuzzy-PID for comparative analysis with the conventional PID.The FIS editor from MATLAB defines the membership function and the rules. Load disturbances from a variety of speed response and the step response are simulated from different scenarios. The Fuzzy PID has resulted to be more robust and it is insensitive to variations in the parameter

The behavior of cold-formed steel and Belian hardwood self-tapping screw connections

Cold-formed steel has been widely used to retrofit and restore buildings, especially timber buildings. This is because the material is readily available, flexible, and lightweight. However, limited research is available with little assessment concerning cold-formed steel and hardwood connection performance. This paper experimentally studies the behavior of connections composed of self-tapping screws, cold-formed steel, and Belian hardwood. Five connection configurations were investigated, where the ultimate load-carrying capacity of the connection was determined through a sequence of shear and tension tests. The results showed that the connection failed by screw withdrawal under tension load. However, when loaded in shear, the failure mode of the connection changed from screw failure when the screw head was at the Belian side to screw rotation when the screw head was at the cold-formed steel side. The performance of current design guidance in Eurocode 5 was assessed by comparing the strengths obtained from the experiments. The comparison results showed that Eurocode 5 is conservative in predicting the performance of self-tapping screw connection composed of cold-formed steel and Belian hardwood in tension. However, it was overly conservative in predicting the shear strength of the connection as the design strengths are overestimated by around 60%

Calculation of two-loop virtual corrections to b --> s l+ l- in the standard model

We present in detail the calculation of the virtual O(alpha_s) corrections to the inclusive semi-leptonic rare decay b --> s l+ l-. We also include those O(alpha_s) bremsstrahlung contributions which cancel the infrared and mass singularities showing up in the virtual corrections. In order to avoid large resonant contributions, we restrict the invariant mass squared s of the lepton pair to the range 0.05 < s/mb^2 < 0.25. The analytic results are represented as expansions in the small parameters s/mb^2, z = mc^2/mb^2 and s/(4 mc^2). The new contributions drastically reduce the renormalization scale dependence of the decay spectrum. For the corresponding branching ratio (restricted to the above s-range) the renormalization scale uncertainty gets reduced from +/-13% to +/-6.5%.Comment: 41 pages including 9 postscript figures; in version 2 some typos and inconsistent notation correcte

B_s --> mu+ mu- decay in the R-parity violating minimal supergravity

We study B_s --> mu+ mu- in the context of the R-parity violating minimal supergravity in the high tan beta regime. We find that the lowest value of the branching ratio can go well below the present LHCb sensitivity and hence B_s --> mu+ mu- can even be invisible to the LHC. We also find that the present upper bound on Br(B_s --> mu+ mu-) puts strong constraint on the minimal supergravity parameter space. The constraints become more severe if the upper bound is close to its standard model prediction.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures; version to be published in European Physical Journal

Analysis of Various Polarization Asymmetries In The Inclusive bs+b\to s \ell^+ \ell^- Decay In The Fourth-Generation Standard Model

    Get PDF
In this study a systematical analysis of various polarization asymmetries in inclusive b \rar s \ell^+ \ell^- decay in the standard model (SM) with four generation of quarks is carried out. We found that the various asymmetries are sensitive to the new mixing and quark masses for both of the μ\mu and τ\tau channels. Sizeable deviations from the SM values are obtained. Hence, b \rar s \ell^+ \ell^- decay is a valuable tool for searching physics beyond the SM, especially in the indirect searches for the fourth-generation of quarks (t,b)t', b').Comment: 19 Pages, 10 Figures, 3 Table

Bio-orthogonal Supramolecular Latching inside Live Animals and Its Application for in Vivo Cancer Imaging

© 2019 American Chemical Society. Here, we demonstrate a supramolecular latching tool for bio-orthogonal noncovalent anchoring of small synthetic molecules in live animal models using a fully synthetic high-affinity binding pair between cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) and adamantylammonium (AdA). This supramolecular latching system is small (∼1 kDa), ensuring efficient uptake into cells, tissues, and whole organisms. It is also chemically robust and resistant to enzymatic degradation and analogous to well-characterized biological systems in terms of noncovalent binding. Occurrence of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between cyanine 3-CB[7] (Cy3-CB[7]) and boron-dipyrromethene 630/650X-AdA (BDP630/650-AdA) inside a live worm (Caenorhabditis elegans) indicates efficient in situ high-affinity association between AdA and CB[7] inside live animals. In addition, selective visualization of a cancer site of a live mouse upon supramolecular latching of cyanine 5-AdA (Cy5-AdA) on prelocalized CB[7]-conjugating antibody on the cancer site demonstrates the potential of this synthetic system for in vivo cancer imaging. These findings provide a fresh insight into the development of new chemical biology tools and medical therapeutic systems11sciescopu

Power Factor Improvement in Power System with the Integration of Renewable Energy

    Get PDF
The non-linear constant increment of power demands due to loads caused a complexity in the operation of the power system network and might also cause insecurity without adequate control in the system with large power flows. A successful alternative energy source gives new challenges when connected to the power grid system. It is however that with the presence of environmental conditions, there is a constant fluctuation of generated power from renewable energy sources. This can be explained when wind power is used as a source of injection into an electric grid, where the power quality will be affected due to the fluctuating condition of the nature of the wind and comparatively new types of its generators panel. Power system control is introduced in this matter using a controller known as FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission System). FACTS controllers such as STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) and SSSC (Static Synchronous Series Compensator) can function to be a terminal voltage regulator to the power system and consequently improve the systems’ stability and power quality. With the usage of IEEE 14 bus power system network, both the potential STATCOM and SSSC are measured using the controller at high influential locations of the power system

We report a measurement of the bottom-strange meson mixing phase \beta_s using the time evolution of B0_s -> J/\psi (->\mu+\mu-) \phi (-> K+ K-) decays in which the quark-flavor content of the bottom-strange meson is identified at production. This measurement uses the full data set of proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt(s)= 1.96 TeV collected by the Collider Detector experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to 9.6 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of \beta_s and the B0_s decay-width difference \Delta\Gamma_s, and measure \beta_s in [-\pi/2, -1.51] U [-0.06, 0.30] U [1.26, \pi/2] at the 68% confidence level, in agreement with the standard model expectation. Assuming the standard model value of \beta_s, we also determine \Delta\Gamma_s = 0.068 +- 0.026 (stat) +- 0.009 (syst) ps-1 and the mean B0_s lifetime, \tau_s = 1.528 +- 0.019 (stat) +- 0.009 (syst) ps, which are consistent and competitive with determinations by other experiments.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, Phys.
