Multiple Roles of Pitx2 in Cardiac Development and Disease

Cardiac development is a complex morphogenetic process initiated as bilateral cardiogenic mesoderm is specified at both sides of the gastrulating embryo. Soon thereafter, these cardiogenic cells fuse at the embryonic midline configuring a symmetrical linear cardiac tube. Left/right bilateral asymmetry is first detected in the forming heart as the cardiac tube bends to the right, and subsequently, atrial and ventricular chambers develop. Molecular signals emanating from the node confer distinct left/right signalling pathways that ultimately lead to activation of the homeobox transcription factor Pitx2 in the left side of distinct embryonic organ anlagen, including the developing heart. Asymmetric expression of Pitx2 has therefore been reported during different cardiac developmental stages, and genetic deletion of Pitx2 provided evidence of key regulatory roles of this transcription factor during cardiogenesis and thus congenital heart diseases. More recently, impaired Pitx2 function has also been linked to arrhythmogenic processes, providing novel roles in the adult heart. In this manuscript, we provide a state-of-the-art review of the fundamental roles of Pitx2 during cardiogenesis, arrhythmogenesis and its contribution to congenital heart diseases

Persistent interest lies in gender inequality, especially with regard to the favouring of sons over daughters. Economists are concerned with how privilege is transmitted across generations, and anthropologists have long studied sex-biased inheritance norms. There has, however, been no focused cross-cultural investigation of how parent-offspring correlations in wealth vary by offspring sex. We estimate these correlations for 38 wealth measures, including somatic and relational wealth, from 15 populations ranging from hunter-gatherers to small-scale farmers. Although small sample sizes limit our statistical power, we find no evidence of ubiquitous male bias, at least as inferred from comparing parent-son and parent-daughter correlations. Rather we find wide variation in signatures of sex bias, with evidence of both son and daughter-biased transmission. Further, we introduce a model that helps pinpoint the conditions under which simple mid-point parent-offspring wealth correlations can reveal information about sex-biased parental investment. Our findings are relevant to the study of female-biased kinship by revealing just how little normative descriptors of kinship systems, such as patrilineal inheritance, capture intergenerational correlations in wealth, and how variable parent-son and parent-daughter correlations can be. We present 294 pulsars found in GeV data from the Large Area Telescope (LAT)
on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Another 33 millisecond pulsars (MSPs)
discovered in deep radio searches of LAT sources will likely reveal pulsations
once phase-connected rotation ephemerides are achieved. A further dozen optical
and/or X-ray binary systems co-located with LAT sources also likely harbor
gamma-ray MSPs. This catalog thus reports roughly 340 gamma-ray pulsars and
candidates, 10% of all known pulsars, compared to â€11 known before Fermi.
Half of the gamma-ray pulsars are young. Of these, the half that are undetected
in radio have a broader Galactic latitude distribution than the young
radio-loud pulsars. The others are MSPs, with 6 undetected in radio. Overall,
>235 are bright enough above 50 MeV to fit the pulse profile, the energy
spectrum, or both. For the common two-peaked profiles, the gamma-ray peak
closest to the magnetic pole crossing generally has a softer spectrum. The
spectral energy distributions tend to narrow as the spindown power EË
decreases to its observed minimum near 1033 erg sâ1, approaching the
shape for synchrotron radiation from monoenergetic electrons. We calculate
gamma-ray luminosities when distances are available. Our all-sky gamma-ray
sensitivity map is useful for population syntheses. The electronic catalog
version provides gamma-ray pulsar ephemerides, properties and fit results to

This review is focused on neutrino mixing and neutrino oscillations in the
light of the recent experimental developments. After discussing possible types
of neutrino mixing for Dirac and Majorana neutrinos and considering in detail
the phenomenology of neutrino oscillations in vacuum and matter, we review all
existing evidence and indications in favour of neutrino oscillations that have
been obtained in the atmospheric, solar and LSND experiments. We present the
results of the analyses of the neutrino oscillation data in the framework of
mixing of three and four massive neutrinos and investigate possibilities to
test the different neutrino mass and mixing schemes obtained in this way. We
also discuss briefly future neutrino oscillation experiments.Comment: 109 pages. Final version to be published in Progress in Particle and

On 2017 August 17 a binary neutron star coalescence candidate (later designated GW170817) with merger time 12:41:04 UTC was observed through gravitational waves by the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. The Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor independently detected a gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) with a time delay of ~1.7 s with respect to the merger time. From the gravitational-wave signal, the source was initially localized to a sky region of 31 deg2 at a luminosity distance of 40+8-8 Mpc and with component masses consistent with neutron stars. The component masses were later measured to be in the range 0.86 to 2.26 Mo. An extensive observing campaign was launched across the electromagnetic spectrum leading to the discovery of a bright optical transient (SSS17a, now with the IAU identification of AT 2017gfo) in NGC 4993 (at ~40 Mpc) less than 11 hours after the merger by the One- Meter, Two Hemisphere (1M2H) team using the 1 m Swope Telescope. The optical transient was independently detected by multiple teams within an hour. Subsequent observations targeted the object and its environment. Early ultraviolet observations revealed a blue transient that faded within 48 hours. Optical and infrared observations showed a redward evolution over ~10 days. Following early non-detections, X-ray and radio emission were discovered at the transientâs position ~9 and ~16 days, respectively, after the merger. Both the X-ray and radio emission likely arise from a physical process that is distinct from the one that generates the UV/optical/near-infrared emission. No ultra-high-energy gamma-rays and no neutrino candidates consistent with the source were found in follow-up searches. These observations support the hypothesis that GW170817 was produced by the merger of two neutron stars in NGC4993 followed by a short gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) and a kilonova/macronova powered by the radioactive decay of r-process nuclei synthesized in the ejecta

Jet fragmentation functions are measured for the first time in proton-proton
collisions for charged pions, kaons, and protons within jets recoiling against
a Z boson. The charged-hadron distributions are studied longitudinally and
transversely to the jet direction for jets with transverse momentum 20 <pTâ<100 GeV and in the pseudorapidity range 2.5<η<4. The
data sample was collected with the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy
of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.64 fbâ1. Triple
differential distributions as a function of the hadron longitudinal momentum
fraction, hadron transverse momentum, and jet transverse momentum are also
measured for the first time. This helps constrain transverse-momentum-dependent
fragmentation functions. Differences in the shapes and magnitudes of the
measured distributions for the different hadron species provide insights into
the hadronization process for jets predominantly initiated by light quarks.Comment: All figures and tables, along with machine-readable versions and any

A gravitational-wave (GW) transient was identified in data recorded by the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) detectors on 2015 September 14. The event, initially designated G184098 and later given the name GW150914, is described in detail elsewhere. By prior arrangement, preliminary estimates of the time, significance, and sky location of the event were shared with 63 teams of observers covering radio, optical, near-infrared, X-ray, and gamma-ray wavelengths with ground- and space-based facilities. In this Letter we describe the low-latency analysis of the GW data and present the sky localization of the first observed compact binary merger. We summarize the follow-up observations reported by 25 teams via private Gamma-ray Coordinates Network circulars, giving an overview of the participating facilities, the GW sky localization coverage, the timeline, and depth of the observations. As this event turned out to be a binary black hole merger, there is little expectation of a detectable electromagnetic (EM) signature. Nevertheless, this first broadband campaign to search for a counterpart of an Advanced LIGO source represents a milestone and highlights the broad capabilities of the transient astronomy community and the observing strategies that have been developed to pursue neutron star binary merger events. Detailed investigations of the EM data and results of the EM follow-up campaign are being disseminated in papers by the individual teams

The decay BââÎc+âÎËcââKâ is studied
in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sâ=13 TeV
using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 fbâ1
collected by the LHCb experiment. In the Îc+âKâ system, the
Îcâ(2930)0 state observed at the BaBar and Belle experiments is
resolved into two narrower states, Îcâ(2923)0 and Îcâ(2939)0,
whose masses and widths are measured to be m(Îcâ(2923)0)=2924.5±0.4±1.1MeV,m(Îcâ(2939)0)=2938.5±0.9±2.3MeV,Î(Îcâ(2923)0)=0004.8±0.9±1.5MeV,Î(Îcâ(2939)0)=0011.0±1.9±7.5MeV, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second
systematic. The results are consistent with a previous LHCb measurement using a
prompt Îc+âKâ sample. Evidence of a new Îcâ(2880)0
state is found with a local significance of 3.8Ï, whose mass and width
are measured to be 2881.8±3.1±8.5MeV and 12.4±5.3±5.8MeV, respectively. In addition, evidence of a new decay mode
Îcâ(2790)0âÎc+âKâ is found with a significance of
3.7Ï. The relative branching fraction of BââÎc+âÎËcââKâ with respect to the BââD+DâKâ
decay is measured to be 2.36±0.11±0.22±0.25, where the first
uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third originates from
the branching fractions of charm hadron decays.Comment: All figures and tables, along with any supplementary material and
