Dropping Question Marks: War Art, Leadership, the Canadian Forces and Afghanistan

As a contemporary war artist, Gertrude Kearns presents interpretive challenges to the commemoration and contextualization of controversial aspects of Canadian military history, both from her personal perspective and in terms of the institutional responsibilities associated with meaningful public presentations of war art. In the context of her decade-long Afghan War senior leadership series, and with reference to earlier Somalian and Balkan works, in this article she discusses the appropriateness of her selected subject matter as well as her own responsibility as a war artist in dealing with everything from disturbing and regular subjects to mission concept. Kearns reviews accountability, her work both officially and unofficially with Canadian personnel, and offers diverse military and civilian perspectives on her independent research approach and decisions as a civilian war artist working with specific Canadian Forces military topics and events

Conceptualising customer value in a leisure service setting: value is in the eye of the beholder.

Currently there is little research that considers value or value creation from a sport and physical activity context or from the participant’s perspective. Despite the emerging importance of value as an incentive for customers to perform desired behaviours, this study’s investigation represents the first examination of the value construct as it pertains to the consumption of sport and physical activity opportunities. Sheth & Uslay (2007:303) called for marketers to use the value creating paradigm to ‘reach beyond value in exchange and even value in use’ to think about other types of value, whilst this research was focused specifically on identifying the various dimensions of customer-perceived value in a sport and physical activity setting, insights gained from this study also question the simplicity of value being conceived as an either (value-in-exchange) or (value-in-use) concept, and this is where the paper’s significant contribution to further our theoretical understanding can be found. Whilst accepting further work is required to refine the original S&PAVAL model that is presented here, and to test it in a wider variety of settings, this paper contributes to a deeper and more meaningful investigation into customer value theory

Antipathy to art in a recalcitrant court

The author examines the seminal case law produced by the European Court of Human Rights on freedom of artistic expression and its ethical boundaries, and analyses why the Court has been so reluctant to support artistic freedom. The article focuses on the cardinal constitutional laws of obscene and blasphemous libel, laws which are designed to fulfil the paternalistic function of insulating the moral approaches of citizens from what is considered by legislators and judges to be undesirable corruption. Article by Paul Kearns (Lecturer in Law at the School of Law, University of Manchester) published in Amicus Curiae – Journal of the Society for Advanced Legal Studies at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies. The Journal is produced by SALS at the IALS (Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, School of Advanced Study, University of London)

Mobility, mixing and neighbourhood change: a British perspective

    Get PDF
The articles in this symposium highlight three important areas of inquiry related to residential mobility—what constitutes mobility, the processes of mobility, and the effects of mobility on different groups and locations. In each of these areas, the challenge of understanding becomes more difficult as research reveals the complexity of the underlying processes. Further, our consideration of these challenges helps to identify the integral link between residential mobility studies and research on neighborhood effects (Hedman and van Ham, 2012)

Pathways to physical activity legacy: assessing the regeneration potential of multi-sport events using a prospective approach

    Get PDF
Urban regeneration is now commonly cited as the rationale for hosting multi-sport events. However, the concept of legacy arising from these events is contested and the evidence base in relation to benefits for the host community is weak, especially in respect of increasing physical activity and sports participation. A theory-based assessment framework is developed to provide a robust prospective assessment of the likely impacts of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games on physical activity for the host community in the East End of the city. We identify scope for change, anticipated causal pathways and propose supporting physical activity though better designed environments as a means of generating legacy benefits at population level
