The holistic phase model of early adult crisis
The objective of the current study was to explore the structural, temporal and experiential manifestations of crisis episodes in early adulthood, using a holistic-systemic theoretical framework. Based on an analysis of 50 interviews with individuals about a crisis episode between the ages of 25 and 35, a holistic model was developed. The model comprises four phases: (1) Locked-in, (2) Separation/Time-out, (3) Exploration and (4) Rebuilding, which in turn have characteristic features at four levels—person-in-environment, identity, motivation and affect-cognition. A crisis starts out with a commitment at work or home that has been made but is no longer desired, and this is followed by an emotionally volatile period of change as that commitment is terminated. The positive trajectory of crisis involves movement through an exploratory period towards active rebuilding of a new commitment, but ‘fast-forward’ and ‘relapse’ loops can interrupt Phases 3 and 4 and make a positive resolution of the episode less likely. The model shows conceptual links with life stage theories of emerging adulthood and early adulthood, and it extends current understandings of the transitional developmental challenges that young adults encounter
Strength in numbers : patient experiences of group exercise within hospice palliative care
Background: Exercise is increasingly recognized as a core component of palliative rehabilitation. The group
exercise model is often adopted as a means of reaching more patients with limited resource. Despite the growth of
quantitative research examining this area of practice, few qualitative studies have looked at the patient experience
of participating in group exercise in a palliative setting, and most exclude patients with a non-cancer diagnosis.
Methods: The aim of this study was to explore patients’ experiences of participating in group exercise classes in a
hospice setting. In this qualitative, phenomenological study, nine patients participating in a group exercise
programme at a South London hospice completed semi-structured interviews. Participants were purposively
sampled by gender, age, ethnicity and diagnosis; to include diagnoses across cancer, respiratory and neurological
conditions. Transcripts were interpreted using thematic analysis.
Results: All patients reported positive experiences of participating in group exercise classes. Improvements
reported in physical function had a positive effect on ability to complete activities of daily living and enhanced
patient mood. Other reported psychosocial benefits included: promotion of self-management; space and
opportunity for reflection; supportive relationships; sharing of information; and a deeper appreciation of patients’
own abilities.
Conclusion: This study highlights the positive experiences and value of group exercise classes to groups of people
with diverse cancer and non-cancer conditions. The physical, emotional and psychosocial benefits suggest hospices
and other palliative services should explore similar programmes as part of their rehabilitation services. The
recognition that exercise groups can be mixed and need not be bespoke to one condition has positive cost and
staff resource ramifications
Influence of Polymorphism on the Electronic Structure of Ga2O3
The search for new wide band gap materials is intensifying to satisfy the
need for more advanced and energy efficient power electronic devices.
GaO has emerged as an alternative to SiC and GaN, sparking a renewed
interest in its fundamental properties beyond the main -phase. Here,
three polymorphs of GaO, , and , are
investigated using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron and absorption
spectroscopy, and ab initio theoretical approaches to gain insights into their
structure - electronic structure relationships. Valence and conduction
electronic structure as well as semi-core and core states are probed, providing
a complete picture of the influence of local coordination environments on the
electronic structure. State-of-the-art electronic structure theory, including
all-electron density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory,
provide detailed understanding of the spectroscopic results. The calculated
spectra provide very accurate descriptions of all experimental spectra and
additionally illuminate the origin of observed spectral features. This work
provides a strong basis for the exploration of the GaO polymorphs as
materials at the heart of future electronic device generations.Comment: Updated manuscript version after peer revie
Natural Band Alignments and Band Offsets of Sb2Se3 Solar Cells
Sb2Se3 is a promising material for use in photovoltaics, but the optimum device structure has not yet been identified. This study provides band alignment measurements between Sb2Se3, identical to that used in high-efficiency photovoltaic devices, and its two most commonly used window layers, namely, CdS and TiO2. Band alignments are measured via two different approaches: Anderson’s rule was used to predict an interface band alignment from measured natural band alignments, and the Kraut method was used in conjunction with hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy to directly measure the band offsets at the interface. This allows examination of the effect of interface formation on the band alignments. The conduction band minimum (CBM) of TiO2 is found by the Kraut method to lie 0.82 eV below that of Sb2Se3, whereas the CdS CBM is only 0.01 eV below that of Sb2Se3. Furthermore, a significant difference is observed between the natural alignment- and Kraut method-determined offsets for TiO2/Sb2Se3, whereas there is little difference for CdS/Sb2Se3. Finally, these results are related to device performance, taking into consideration how these results may guide the future development of Sb2Se3 solar cells and providing a methodology that can be used to assess band alignments in device-relevant systems
Uncovering treatment burden as a key concept for stroke care: a systematic review of qualitative research
<b>Background</b> Patients with chronic disease may experience complicated management plans requiring significant personal investment. This has been termed ‘treatment burden’ and has been associated with unfavourable outcomes. The aim of this systematic review is to examine the qualitative literature on treatment burden in stroke from the patient perspective.<p></p>
<b>Methods and findings</b> The search strategy centred on: stroke, treatment burden, patient experience, and qualitative methods. We searched: Scopus, CINAHL, Embase, Medline, and PsycINFO. We tracked references, footnotes, and citations. Restrictions included: English language, date of publication January 2000 until February 2013. Two reviewers independently carried out the following: paper screening, data extraction, and data analysis. Data were analysed using framework synthesis, as informed by Normalization Process Theory. Sixty-nine papers were included. Treatment burden includes: (1) making sense of stroke management and planning care, (2) interacting with others, (3) enacting management strategies, and (4) reflecting on management. Health care is fragmented, with poor communication between patient and health care providers. Patients report inadequate information provision. Inpatient care is unsatisfactory, with a perceived lack of empathy from professionals and a shortage of stimulating activities on the ward. Discharge services are poorly coordinated, and accessing health and social care in the community is difficult. The study has potential limitations because it was restricted to studies published in English only and data from low-income countries were scarce.<p></p>
<b>Conclusions</b> Stroke management is extremely demanding for patients, and treatment burden is influenced by micro and macro organisation of health services. Knowledge deficits mean patients are ill equipped to organise their care and develop coping strategies, making adherence less likely. There is a need to transform the approach to care provision so that services are configured to prioritise patient needs rather than those of health care systems
Introductory programming: a systematic literature review
As computing becomes a mainstream discipline embedded in the school curriculum and acts as an enabler for an increasing range of academic disciplines in higher education, the literature on introductory programming is growing. Although there have been several reviews that focus on specific aspects of introductory programming, there has been no broad overview of the literature exploring recent trends across the breadth of introductory programming.
This paper is the report of an ITiCSE working group that conducted a systematic review in order to gain an overview of the introductory programming literature. Partitioning the literature into papers addressing the student, teaching, the curriculum, and assessment, we explore trends, highlight advances in knowledge over the past 15 years, and indicate possible directions for future research
Band alignment of Sb2O3 and Sb2Se3
Antimony selenide (Sb2Se3) possesses great potential in the field of photovoltaics (PV) due to its suitable properties for use as a solar absorber and good prospects for scalability. Previous studies have reported the growth of a native antimony oxide (Sb2O3) layer at the surface of Sb2Se3 thin films during deposition and exposure to air, which can affect the contact between Sb2Se3 and subsequent layers. In this study, photoemission techniques were utilized on both Sb2Se3 bulk crystals and thin films to investigate the band alignment between Sb2Se3 and the Sb2O3 layer. By subtracting the valence band spectrum of an in situ cleaved Sb2Se3 bulk crystal from that of the atmospherically contaminated bulk crystal, a valence band offset (VBO) of −1.72 eV is measured between Sb2Se3 and Sb2O3. This result is supported by a −1.90 eV VBO measured between Sb2O3 and Sb2Se3 thin films via the Kraut method. Both results indicate a straddling alignment that would oppose carrier extraction through the back contact of superstrate PV devices. This work yields greater insight into the band alignment of Sb2O3 at the surface of Sb2Se3 films, which is crucial for improving the performance of these PV devices
Citizen Science Reveals Unexpected Continental-Scale Evolutionary Change in a Model Organism
Organisms provide some of the most sensitive indicators of climate change and evolutionary responses are becoming apparent in species with short generation times. Large datasets on genetic polymorphism that can provide an historical benchmark against which to test for recent evolutionary responses are very rare, but an exception is found in the brown-lipped banded snail (Cepaea nemoralis). This species is sensitive to its thermal environment and exhibits several polymorphisms of shell colour and banding pattern affecting shell albedo in the majority of populations within its native range in Europe. We tested for evolutionary changes in shell albedo that might have been driven by the warming of the climate in Europe over the last half century by compiling an historical dataset for 6,515 native populations of C. nemoralis and comparing this with new data on nearly 3,000 populations. The new data were sampled mainly in 2009 through the Evolution MegaLab, a citizen science project that engaged thousands of volunteers in 15 countries throughout Europe in the biggest such exercise ever undertaken. A known geographic cline in the frequency of the colour phenotype with the highest albedo (yellow) was shown to have persisted and a difference in colour frequency between woodland and more open habitats was confirmed, but there was no general increase in the frequency of yellow shells. This may have been because snails adapted to a warming climate through behavioural thermoregulation. By contrast, we detected an unexpected decrease in the frequency of Unbanded shells and an increase in the Mid-banded morph. Neither of these evolutionary changes appears to be a direct response to climate change, indicating that the influence of other selective agents, possibly related to changing predation pressure and habitat change with effects on micro-climate
Explicit and implicit information needs of people with depression: a qualitative investigation of problems reported on an online depression support forum
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Health management is impeded when consumers do not possess adequate knowledge about their illness. At a public health level, consumer knowledge about depression is particularly important because depression is highly prevalent and causes substantial disability and burden. However, currently little is known about the information needs of people with depression. This study aimed to investigate the explicit and implicit information needs of users of an online depression support forum.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A sample of 2680 posts was systematically selected from three discussion forums on an online depression bulletin board (blueboard.anu.edu.au). Data were examined for evidence of requests for information (reflecting explicit needs) and reports of past or current problems (implicit needs). Thematic analysis was conducted using a data-driven inductive approach with the assistance of NVivo 7, and instances of questions and people reporting particular types of problems were recorded.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 134 participants with personal experience of depression contributed to the data analysed. Six broad themes represented participant queries and reported problems: Understanding depression; disclosure and stigma; medication; treatment and services; coping with depression; and comorbid health problems. A variety of specific needs were evident within these broad thematic areas. Some people (n = 46) expressed their information needs by asking direct questions (47 queries) but the majority of needs were expressed implicitly (351 problems) by the 134 participants. The most evident need for information related to coping with depression and its consequences, followed by topics associated with medication, treatment and services.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>People with depression have substantial unmet information needs and require strategies to deal with the difficulties they face. They require access to high quality and relevant online resources and professionals; thus, there is a need to rectify current gaps in the provision of information and limitations of dissemination. Greater knowledge about depression and its treatment is also needed at the general community level.</p
Measurement of the Bottom-Strange Meson Mixing Phase in the Full CDF Data Set
We report a measurement of the bottom-strange meson mixing phase \beta_s
using the time evolution of B0_s -> J/\psi (->\mu+\mu-) \phi (-> K+ K-) decays
in which the quark-flavor content of the bottom-strange meson is identified at
production. This measurement uses the full data set of proton-antiproton
collisions at sqrt(s)= 1.96 TeV collected by the Collider Detector experiment
at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to 9.6 fb-1 of integrated luminosity.
We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of \beta_s and the
B0_s decay-width difference \Delta\Gamma_s, and measure \beta_s in [-\pi/2,
-1.51] U [-0.06, 0.30] U [1.26, \pi/2] at the 68% confidence level, in
agreement with the standard model expectation. Assuming the standard model
value of \beta_s, we also determine \Delta\Gamma_s = 0.068 +- 0.026 (stat) +-
0.009 (syst) ps-1 and the mean B0_s lifetime, \tau_s = 1.528 +- 0.019 (stat) +-
0.009 (syst) ps, which are consistent and competitive with determinations by
