Ab initio density functional investigation of B_24 cluster: Rings, Tubes, Planes, and Cages
We investigate the equilibrium geometries and the systematics of bonding in
various isomers of a 24-atom boron cluster using Born-Oppenheimer molecular
dynamics within the framework of density functional theory. The isomers studied
are the rings, the convex and the quasiplanar structures, the tubes and, the
closed structures. A staggered double-ring is found to be the most stable
structure amongst the isomers studied. Our calculations reveal that a 24-atom
boron cluster does form closed 3-d structures. All isomers show staggered
arrangement of nearest neighbor atoms. Such a staggering facilitates
hybridization in boron cluster. A polarization of bonds between the peripheral
atoms in the ring and the planar isomers is also seen. Finally, we discuss the
fusion of two boron icosahedra. We find that the fusion occurs when the
distance between the two icosahedra is less than a critical distance of about

On-disk coronal rain
Small and elongated, cool and dense blob-like structures are being reported
with high resolution telescopes in physically different regions throughout the
solar atmosphere. Their detection and the understanding of their formation,
morphology and thermodynamical characteristics can provide important
information on their hosting environment, especially concerning the magnetic
field, whose understanding constitutes a major problem in solar physics. An
example of such blobs is coronal rain, a phenomenon of thermal non- equilibrium
observed in active region loops, which consists of cool and dense chromospheric
blobs falling along loop-like paths from coronal heights. So far, only off-limb
coronal rain has been observed and few reports on the phenomenon exist. In the
present work, several datasets of on-disk H{\alpha} observations with the CRisp
Imaging SpectroPolarimeter (CRISP) at the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope (SST) are
analyzed. A special family of on-disk blobs is selected for each dataset and a
statistical analysis is carried out on their dynamics, morphology and
temperatures. All characteristics present distributions which are very similar
to reported coronal rain statistics. We discuss possible interpretations
considering other similar blob-like structures reported so far and show that a
coronal rain interpretation is the most likely one. Their chromospheric nature
and the projection effects (which eliminate all direct possibility of height
estimation) on one side, and their small sizes, fast dynamics, and especially,
their faint character (offering low contrast with the background intensity) on
the other side, are found as the main causes for the absence until now of the
detection of this on-disk coronal rain counterpart.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures. Accepted for Solar Physic
Scientific Highlights of the HETE-2 Mission
The HETE-2 mission has been highly productive. It has observed more than 250
GRBs so far. It is currently localizing 25 - 30 GRBs per year, and has
localized 43 GRBs to date. Twenty-one of these localizations have led to the
detection of X-ray, optical, or radio afterglows, and as of now, 11 of the
bursts with afterglows have known redshifts. HETE-2 has confirmed the
connection between GRBs and Type Ic supernovae, a singular achievement and
certainly one of the scientific highlights of the mission so far. It has
provided evidence that the isotropic-equivalent energies and luminosities of
GRBs are correlated with redshift, implying that GRBs and their progenitors
evolve strongly with redshift. Both of these results have profound implications
for the nature of GRB progenitors and for the use of GRBs as a probe of
cosmology and the early universe. HETE-2 has placed severe constraints on any
X-ray or optical afterglow of a short GRB. It is also solving the mystery of

Highly Charged Ions in Rare Earth Permanent Magnet Penning Traps
A newly constructed apparatus at the National Institute of Standards and
Technology (NIST) is designed for the isolation, manipulation, and study of
highly charged ions. Highly charged ions are produced in the NIST electron-beam
ion trap (EBIT), extracted through a beamline that selects a single mass/charge
species, then captured in a compact Penning trap. The magnetic field of the
trap is generated by cylindrical NdFeB permanent magnets integrated into its
electrodes. In a room-temperature prototype trap with a single NdFeB magnet,
species including Ne10+ and N7+ were confined with storage times of order 1
second, showing the potential of this setup for manipulation and spectroscopy
of highly charged ions in a controlled environment. Ion capture has since been
demonstrated with similar storage times in a more-elaborate Penning trap that
integrates two coaxial NdFeB magnets for improved B-field homogeneity. Ongoing
experiments utilize a second-generation apparatus that incorporates this
two-magnet Penning trap along with a fast time-of-flight MCP detector capable
of resolving the charge-state evolution of trapped ions. Holes in the
two-magnet Penning trap ring electrode allow for optical and atomic beam
access. Possible applications include spectroscopic studies of one-electron
ions in Rydberg states, as well as highly charged ions of interest in atomic

Measurement of the Running of the Electromagnetic Coupling at Large Momentum-Transfer at LEP
The evolution of the electromagnetic coupling, alpha, in the
momentum-transfer range 1800GeV^2 < -Q^2 < 21600GeV^2 is studied with about
40000 Bhabha-scattering events collected with the L3 detector at LEP at
centre-of-mass energies 189-209GeV. The running of alpha is parametrised as:
alpha(Q^2) = alpha_0/(1-C Delta alpha(Q^2)), where alpha_0=\alpha(Q^2=0) is the
fine-structure constant and C=1 corresponds to the evolution expected in QED. A
fit to the differential cross section of the e+e- ->e+e- process for scattering
angles in the range |cos theta|<0.9 excludes the hypothesis of a constant value
of alpha, C=0, and validates the QED prediction with the result: C = 1.05 +/-
0.07 +/- 0.14, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second
systematic
An Integrated TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource to Drive High-Quality Survival Outcome Analytics
For a decade, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) program collected clinicopathologic annotation data along with multi-platform molecular profiles of more than 11,000 human tumors across 33 different cancer types. TCGA clinical data contain key features representing the democratized nature of the data collection process. To ensure proper use of this large clinical dataset associated with genomic features, we developed a standardized dataset named the TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource (TCGA-CDR), which includes four major clinical outcome endpoints. In addition to detailing major challenges and statistical limitations encountered during the effort of integrating the acquired clinical data, we present a summary that includes endpoint usage recommendations for each cancer type. These TCGA-CDR findings appear to be consistent with cancer genomics studies independent of the TCGA effort and provide opportunities for investigating cancer biology using clinical correlates at an unprecedented scale. Analysis of clinicopathologic annotations for over 11,000 cancer patients in the TCGA program leads to the generation of TCGA Clinical Data Resource, which provides recommendations of clinical outcome endpoint usage for 33 cancer types
Measurement of the Bottom-Strange Meson Mixing Phase in the Full CDF Data Set
We report a measurement of the bottom-strange meson mixing phase \beta_s
using the time evolution of B0_s -> J/\psi (->\mu+\mu-) \phi (-> K+ K-) decays
in which the quark-flavor content of the bottom-strange meson is identified at
production. This measurement uses the full data set of proton-antiproton
collisions at sqrt(s)= 1.96 TeV collected by the Collider Detector experiment
at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to 9.6 fb-1 of integrated luminosity.
We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of \beta_s and the
B0_s decay-width difference \Delta\Gamma_s, and measure \beta_s in [-\pi/2,
-1.51] U [-0.06, 0.30] U [1.26, \pi/2] at the 68% confidence level, in
agreement with the standard model expectation. Assuming the standard model
value of \beta_s, we also determine \Delta\Gamma_s = 0.068 +- 0.026 (stat) +-
0.009 (syst) ps-1 and the mean B0_s lifetime, \tau_s = 1.528 +- 0.019 (stat) +-
0.009 (syst) ps, which are consistent and competitive with determinations by

Toward a 21st-century health care system: Recommendations for health care reform
The coverage, cost, and quality problems of the U.S. health care system are evident. Sustainable health care reform must go beyond financing expanded access to care to substantially changing the organization and delivery of care. The FRESH-Thinking Project (www.fresh-thinking.org) held a series of workshops during which physicians, health policy experts, health insurance executives, business leaders, hospital administrators, economists, and others who represent diverse perspectives came together. This group agreed that the following 8 recommendations are fundamental to successful reform: 1. Replace the current fee-for-service payment system with a payment system that encourages and rewards innovation in the efficient delivery of quality care. The new payment system should invest in the development of outcome measures to guide payment. 2. Establish a securely funded, independent agency to sponsor and evaluate research on the comparative effectiveness of drugs, devices, and other medical interventions. 3. Simplify and rationalize federal and state laws and regulations to facilitate organizational innovation, support care coordination, and streamline financial and administrative functions. 4. Develop a health information technology infrastructure with national standards of interoperability to promote data exchange. 5. Create a national health database with the participation of all payers, delivery systems, and others who own health care data. Agree on methods to make de-identified information from this database on clinical interventions, patient outcomes, and costs available to researchers. 6. Identify revenue sources, including a cap on the tax exclusion of employer-based health insurance, to subsidize health care coverage with the goal of insuring all Americans. 7. Create state or regional insurance exchanges to pool risk, so that Americans without access to employer-based or other group insurance could obtain a standard benefits package through these exchanges. Employers should also be allowed to participate in these exchanges for their employees' coverage. 8. Create a health coverage board with broad stakeholder representation to determine and periodically update the affordable standard benefit package available through state or regional insurance exchanges

Burden and risk factors for Pseudomonas aeruginosa community-acquired pneumonia:a Multinational Point Prevalence Study of Hospitalised Patients
Pseudornonas aeruginosa is a challenging bacterium to treat due to its intrinsic resistance to the antibiotics used most frequently in patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Data about the global burden and risk factors associated with P. aeruginosa-CAP are limited. We assessed the multinational burden and specific risk factors associated with P. aeruginosa-CAP.
We enrolled 3193 patients in 54 countries with confirmed diagnosis of CAP who underwent microbiological testing at admission. Prevalence was calculated according to the identification of P. aeruginosa. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify risk factors for antibiotic-susceptible and antibiotic-resistant P. aeruginosa-CAP.
The prevalence of P. aeruginosa and antibiotic-resistant P. aeruginosa-CAP was 4.2% and 2.0%, respectively. The rate of P. aeruginosa CAP in patients with prior infection/colonisation due to P. aeruginosa and at least one of the three independently associated chronic lung diseases (i.e. tracheostomy, bronchiectasis and/or very severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) was 67%. In contrast, the rate of P. aeruginosa-CAP was 2% in patients without prior P. aeruginosa infection/colonisation and none of the selected chronic lung diseases. The multinational prevalence of P. aeruginosa-CAP is low.
The risk factors identified in this study may guide healthcare professionals in deciding empirical antibiotic coverage for CAP patients
