Composite Ground Modification System: Vibroreplacement and Dynamic Compaction, Salt Lake County Detention Center, Utah
The site for a new Adult Detention Center currently under construction in Salt Lake City, Utah, is underlain by loose sands and soft clayey lake deposits. Due to bearing capacity, static settlement, and liquefaction concerns, a hybrid ground improvement program consisting of both dynamic compaction and vibroreplacement was implemented. Stone columns were concentrated under spread and wall footings; dynamic compaction was performed over the whole site. A comprehensive quality assurance/ quality control program was executed, with a significant number of cone penetration tests, standard penetration tests, 10 plate load tests, and deceleration readings taken with an accelerometer mounted on the dynamic compaction weight. This large body of data enabled the authors to assess the effectiveness of the ground improvement program, as well as analyze the results of the experimental deceleration readings
Rare coding variants in ten genes confer substantial risk for schizophrenia
Rare coding variation has historically provided the most direct connections between gene function and disease pathogenesis. By meta-analysing the whole exomes of 24,248 schizophrenia cases and 97,322 controls, we implicate ultra-rare coding variants (URVs) in 10 genes as conferring substantial risk for schizophrenia (odds ratios of 3-50, PPeer reviewe

NACA Research Memorandums
Memorandum presenting wind-tunnel tests of a semispan model of a hypothetical supersonic airplane to determine the static longitudinal stability and control characteristics of the airplane throughout the range of subsonic Mach numbers up to 0.95. The model had a long slender fuselage and a wing and horizontal tail of aspect ratio 4 and taper ratio 0.5. Results regarding the force and moment characteristics, wing wake and effective downwash at the horizontal tail, effects of compressibility, and longitudinal characterisitcs with the flaps deflected are provided
Thigh-length compression stockings and DVT after stroke
Controversy exists as to whether neoadjuvant chemotherapy improves survival in patients with invasive bladder cancer, despite randomised controlled trials of more than 3000 patients. We undertook a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the effect of such treatment on survival in patients with this disease
Factors affecting the duration of exclusive breastfeeding among HIV-infected and -uninfected women in Lusaka, Zambia.
Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) is optimal for infant health and is associated with decreased risk of mother-to-child HIV transmission compared with mixed feeding of breast milk and other foods. To investigate why many women stop EBF before the recommended 6 months, maternal and infant health and infant-feeding data were collected from 177 HIV-infected and 177-uninfected Zambian women regularly from 34 weeks gestation to 16 weeks postpartum. Despite strong support for good breastfeeding practice, only 37% of women were still EBF at week 16. Factors significantly associated with shorter duration of EBF were primiparity, maternal systemic illness, and infant length at 6 weeks. The results suggest that the association of EBF with lower rates of mother-to-child HIV transmission may not be causal but may be secondary to the reduced duration of EBF associated with poor maternal or infant health. Programs supporting EBF should include support for maternal health
