    Bio-Monitoring of airborne fungi and antifungal activity of Clerodendrum infortanum L. against dominant fungi

    The present study provides baseline information on the quantitative and qualitative estimation of aeromycoflora. Burkard personal airsampler and Anderson two stage airsampler were used to detect the quantitative and qualitative estimation of aeromycoflora. 17 non-viable fungal spores were recorded with the aid of Burkard personal airsampler and 12 viable fungal genera were detected using Anderson two stage airsampler. Higher concentration airborne fungi observed in the month of March. Aspergillus sp, Ascospore, Basidiospore, Curvularia sp, Alternaria sp were found to be Nigrospora sp most predominant nonviable fungal genera whereas dominant viable genera were Aspergillus sp, Penicillium sp, Cladosporium sp, Curvularia sp, Trichoderma sp and  Fusarium sp in both the environments. The result of antifungal potential of Clerodendrum infortunatum showed highest efficacy against Aspergillus sp followed by Penicillium sp and Fusarium sp. This present study provided the baseline information about the viable and non-viable concentration in the study sites. Besides the outcomes of this study along with the insightful explanation could aptly provide basis for strategizing effective preventive measures against airborne-fungi. Those are responsible for causing different agricultural crops diseases and human respiratory ailments

    In Vitro Structural and Functional Evaluation of Gold Nanoparticles Conjugated Antibiotics

    Bactericidal efficacy of gold nanoparticles conjugated with ampicillin, streptomycin and kanamycin were evaluated. Gold nanoparticles (Gnps) were conjugated with the antibiotics during the synthesis of nanoparticles utilizing the combined reducing property of antibiotics and sodium borohydride. The conjugation of nanoparticles was confirmed by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and electron microscopic (EM) studies. Such Gnps conjugated antibiotics showed greater bactericidal activity in standard agar well diffusion assay. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of all the three antibiotics along with their Gnps conjugated forms were determined in three bacterial strains,Escherichia coli DH5α,Micrococcus luteusandStaphylococcus aureus. Among them, streptomycin and kanamycin showed significant reduction in MIC values in their Gnps conjugated form whereas; Gnps conjugated ampicillin showed slight decrement in the MIC value compared to its free form. On the other hand, all of them showed more heat stability in their Gnps conjugated forms. Thus, our findings indicated that Gnps conjugated antibiotics are more efficient and might have significant therapeutic implications

    Six-membered ring systems: with O and/or S atoms

    A large variety of publications have emerged in 2012 involving O- and S-6- membered ring systems. The increasing number of reviews and other communica- tions dedicated to natural and synthetic derivatives and their biological significance highlights the importance of these heterocycles. Reviews on natural products involve biosynthesis and isolation of enantiomeric derivatives h12AGE4802i, biosynthesis, isolation, synthesis, and biological studies on the pederin family h12NPR980i and xanthones obtained from fungi, lichens, and bacteria h12CR3717i and on the potential chemotherapeutic value of phyto- chemical products and plant extracts as antidiabetic h12NPR580i, antimicrobial, and resistance-modifying agents h12NPR1007i. A more specific review covers a structure–activity relationship of endoperoxides from marine origin and their antitry- panosomal activity h12OBC7197i. New synthetic routes to naturally occurring, biologically active pyran derivatives have been the object of several papers. Different approaches have been discussed for the total synthesis of tetrahydropyran-containing natural products (")-zampanolide h12CEJ16868, 12EJO4130, 12OL3408i, (")-aspergillides A and B h12H(85)587, 12H(85)1255, 12TA252i, (þ)-neopeltolide h12JOC2225, 12JOC9840, 12H(85) 1255i, or their macrolactone core h12OBC3689, 12OL2346i. The total synthesis of bistramide A h12CEJ7452i and (þ)-kalihinol A h12CC901i and the stereoselec- tive synthesis of a fragment of bryostatin h12S3077, 12TL6163i have also been sur- veyed. Other papers relate the total synthesis of naturally occurring carbocyclic and heterocyclic-fused pyran compounds, such as (")-dysiherbaine h12CC6295i, penos- tatin B h12OL244i, Greek tobacco lactonic products, and analogues h12TL4293i and on the structurally intriguing limonoids andhraxylocarpins A–E h12CEJ14342i. The stereocontrolled synthesis of fused tetrahydropyrans was used in the preparation of blepharocalyxin D h12AGE3901i. Polyphenolic heterocyclic compounds have also received great attention in 2012. The biological activities and the chemistry of prenylated caged xanthones h12PCB78i, the occurrence of sesquiterpene coumarins h12PR77i, and the medicinal properties of the xanthone mangiferin h12MRME412i have been reviewed. An overview on the asymmetric syntheses of flavanones and chromanones h12EJO449i, on the synthesis and reactivity of flavones h12T8523i and xanthones h12COC2818i, on the synthesis and biosynthesis of biocoumarins h12T2553i, and on the synthesis and applications of flavylium compounds h12CSR869i has been discussed. The most recent developments in the synthesis and applications of sultones, a very important class of sulfur compounds, were reported h12CR5339i. A review on xanthene-based fluorescent probes for sensing cations, anions, bio- logical species, and enzyme activity has described the spiro-ring-opening approach with a focus on the major mechanisms controlling their luminescence behavior h12CR1910i. The design and synthesis of other derivatives to be used as sensors of gold species h12CC11229i and other specific metal cations h12PC823i have also been described. Recent advances related to coumarin-derived fluorescent chemosen- sors for metal ions h12COC2690i and to monitoring in vitro analysis and cellular imaging of monoamine oxidase activity h12CC6833i have been discussed. The study of various organic chromophores allowed the synthesis of novel dica- tionic phloroglucinol-type bisflavylium pigments h12SL2053i, and the optical and spectroscopic properties of several synthetic 6-aryldibenzo[b,d]pyrylium salts were explored h12TL6433i. Discussion of specific reactions leading to O- and S-membered heterocyclic compounds covers intramolecular radical cyclization h12S2475i and asymmetric enamine and dienamine catalysis h12EJO865i, oxa-Michael h12CSR988i and dom- ino Knoevenagel–hetero-Diels–Alder (hDA) reactions h12T5693i, and the versatility in cycloadditions as well as nucleophilic reactions using o-quinones h12CSR1050i.     Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search

    Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency–Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research

    Classification of Caesarean Section and Normal Vaginal Deliveries Using Foetal Heart Rate Signals and Advanced Machine Learning Algorithms

    ABSTRACT – Background: Visual inspection of Cardiotocography traces by obstetricians and midwives is the gold standard for monitoring the wellbeing of the foetus during antenatal care. However, inter- and intra-observer variability is high with only a 30% positive predictive value for the classification of pathological outcomes. This has a significant negative impact on the perinatal foetus and often results in cardio-pulmonary arrest, brain and vital organ damage, cerebral palsy, hearing, visual and cognitive defects and in severe cases, death. This paper shows that using machine learning and foetal heart rate signals provides direct information about the foetal state and helps to filter the subjective opinions of medical practitioners when used as a decision support tool. The primary aim is to provide a proof-of-concept that demonstrates how machine learning can be used to objectively determine when medical intervention, such as caesarean section, is required and help avoid preventable perinatal deaths. Methodology: This is evidenced using an open dataset that comprises 506 controls (normal virginal deliveries) and 46 cases (caesarean due to pH ≤7.05 and pathological risk). Several machine-learning algorithms are trained, and validated, using binary classifier performance measures. Results: The findings show that deep learning classification achieves Sensitivity = 94%, Specificity = 91%, Area under the Curve = 99%, F-Score = 100%, and Mean Square Error = 1%. Conclusions: The results demonstrate that machine learning significantly improves the efficiency for the detection of caesarean section and normal vaginal deliveries using foetal heart rate signals compared with obstetrician and midwife predictions and systems reported in previous studies

    Abstract: Synthetic (glyco)peptides inspired by proteins able to self-assemble are appealing biomaterials in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Herein, for the first time, taking advantage of thiol-ene chemistry coupled to solid-phase peptide synthesis, a self-assembling peptide inspired by elastin protein was bioconjugated to three carbohydrates in order to obtain the corresponding glycopeptides. They were studied at the molecular and supramolecular level. The results show that the carbohydrate influences the molecular conformation of the glycopeptide and its self-aggregation properties as well. As future perspective, the results could enable us to tune the final self-aggregation properties of the glycopeptide by changing the sugar moiety
