Nonlinear force-free magnetic field extrapolations: comparison of the Grad-Rubin and Wheatland-Sturrock-Roumeliotis algorithm
We compare the performance of two alternative algorithms which aim to
construct a force-free magnetic field given suitable boundary conditions. For
this comparison, we have implemented both algorithms on the same finite element
grid which uses Whitney forms to describe the fields within the grid cells. The
additional use of conjugate gradient and multigrid iterations result in quite
effective codes. The Grad-Rubin and Wheatland-Sturrock-Roumeliotis algorithms
both perform well for the reconstruction of a known analytic force-free field.
For more arbitrary boundary conditions the Wheatland-Sturrock-Roumeliotis
approach has some difficulties because it requires overdetermined boundary
information which may include inconsistencies. The Grad-Rubin code on the other
hand loses convergence for strong current densities. For the example we have
investigated, however, the maximum possible current density seems to be not far
from the limit beyond which a force free field cannot exist anymore for a given
normal magnetic field intensity on the boundary.Comment: 21 pages, 13 figure
Curbing methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in 38 French hospitals through a 15-year institutional control program
BACKGROUND: The Assistance Publique-HĂŽpitaux de Paris (AP-HP) institution administers 38 teaching hospitals (23 acute care and 15 rehabilitation and long-term care hospitals; total, 23 000 beds) scattered across Paris and surrounding suburbs in France. In the late 1980s, the proportion of methicillin resistance among clinical strains of Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) reached approximately 40% at AP-HP.METHODS: A program aimed at curbing the MRSA burden was launched in 1993, based on passive and active surveillance, barrier precautions, training, and feedback. This program, supported by the strong commitment of the institution, was reinforced in 2001 by a campaign promoting the use of alcohol-based hand-rub solutions. An observational study on MRSA rate was prospectively carried out from 1993 onwards. RESULTS: There was a significant progressive decrease in MRSA burden (-35%) from 1993 to 2007, whether recorded as the proportion (expressed as percentage) of MRSA among S aureus strains (41.0% down to 26.6% overall; 45.3% to 24.2% in blood cultures) or incidence of MRSA cases (0.86 down to 0.56 per 1000 hospital days). The MRSA burden decreased more markedly in intensive care units (-59%) than in surgical (-44%) and medical (-32%) wards. The use of ABHR solutions (in liters per 1000 hospital days) increased steadily from 2 L to 21 L (to 26 L in acute care hospitals and to 10 L in rehabilitation and long-term care hospitals) following the campaign. CONCLUSION: A sustained reduction of MRSA burden can be obtained at the scale of a large hospital institution with high endemic MRSA rates, providing that an intensive program is maintained for a long period
Evolution of Relative Magnetic Helicity: Method of Computation and Its Application to a Simulated Solar Corona above an Active Region
Measurement of the Bottom-Strange Meson Mixing Phase in the Full CDF Data Set
We report a measurement of the bottom-strange meson mixing phase \beta_s
using the time evolution of B0_s -> J/\psi (->\mu+\mu-) \phi (-> K+ K-) decays
in which the quark-flavor content of the bottom-strange meson is identified at
production. This measurement uses the full data set of proton-antiproton
collisions at sqrt(s)= 1.96 TeV collected by the Collider Detector experiment
at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to 9.6 fb-1 of integrated luminosity.
We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of \beta_s and the
B0_s decay-width difference \Delta\Gamma_s, and measure \beta_s in [-\pi/2,
-1.51] U [-0.06, 0.30] U [1.26, \pi/2] at the 68% confidence level, in
agreement with the standard model expectation. Assuming the standard model
value of \beta_s, we also determine \Delta\Gamma_s = 0.068 +- 0.026 (stat) +-
0.009 (syst) ps-1 and the mean B0_s lifetime, \tau_s = 1.528 +- 0.019 (stat) +-
0.009 (syst) ps, which are consistent and competitive with determinations by

An Observational Overview of Solar Flares
We present an overview of solar flares and associated phenomena, drawing upon
a wide range of observational data primarily from the RHESSI era. Following an
introductory discussion and overview of the status of observational
capabilities, the article is split into topical sections which deal with
different areas of flare phenomena (footpoints and ribbons, coronal sources,
relationship to coronal mass ejections) and their interconnections. We also
discuss flare soft X-ray spectroscopy and the energetics of the process. The
emphasis is to describe the observations from multiple points of view, while
bearing in mind the models that link them to each other and to theory. The
present theoretical and observational understanding of solar flares is far from
complete, so we conclude with a brief discussion of models, and a list of
missing but important observations.Comment: This is an article for a monograph on the physics of solar flares,

Penelitian tugas akhir ini mengkaji tentang Profil Wisatawan di
Museum Radya Pustaka Surakarta. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk
mengetahui dari daerah mana saja wisatawan yang berkunjung ke Museum
Radya Pustaka, bagaimana ciri-ciri wisatawan yang berkunjung ke Museum
Radya Pustaka serta harapan-harapan yang diinginkan wisatawan terhadap
Museum Radya Pustaka.
Penelitian dilakukan dengan metode kualitatif. Pengumpulan data
dilakukan melalui wawancara dengan narasumber wisatawan yang berkujung
di Museum Radya Pustaka Surakarta tempat penulis melakukan penelitian,
serta studi pustaka dan studi dokumen guna menambah sumber data.
Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) Sebagian besar wisatawan
yang datang berasal dari Semarang sebesar 32%. (2) Mayoritas wisatawan
yang berkunjung ke Museum Radya Pustaka berusia antara 17-25 tahun dan
kebanyakan dari mereka adalah pelajar atau mahasiswa dengan prosentase
52%. (3) Sebagian besar wisatawan yang datang ke Museum Radya Pustaka
adalah bertujuan untuk melakukan penelitian yaitu sebesar 34%. (4) Harapan
wisatawan yang berkunjung terhadap kelangsungan Museum Radya Pustaka
sebagian besar adalah agar ditingkatkan lagi pengelolaan dan keamanan
museum, agar kejadian hilangnya benda-benda koleksi museum tidak terulang
lagi dikemudian hari.
Kesimpulan dari hasil penelitian ini bahwa wisatawan yang berkujung
ke Museum Radya Pustaka Surakarta mayoritas berasal dari Semarang,
mayoritas berusia 17-25 tahun dan kebanyakan dari mereka adalah berprofesi
sebagai pelajar dan mahasiswa. Kebanyakan wisatawan yang datang bertujuan
untuk melakukan penelitian, serta harapan wisatawan terhadap Museum
Radya Pustaka adalah supaya lebih ditingkatkan lagi pengelolaan dan
keamanan museum

Magnetic Energy Storage and Current Density Distributions for Different Force-Free Models
In the last decades, force-free-field modelling has been used extensively to describe the coronal magnetic field and to better understand the physics of solar eruptions at different scales. Especially the evolution of active regions has been studied by successive equilibria in which each computed magnetic configuration is subject to an evolving photospheric distribution of magnetic field and/or electric-current density. This technique of successive equilibria has been successful in describing the rate of change of the energetics for observed active regions. Nevertheless the change in magnetic configuration due to the increase/decrease of electric current for different force-free models (potential, linear and nonlinear force-free fields) has never been studied in detail before. Here we focus especially on the evolution of the free magnetic energy, the location of the excess of energy, and the distribution of electric currents in the corona. For this purpose, we use an idealised active region characterised by four main polarities and a satellite polarity, allowing us to specify a complex topology and sheared arcades to the coronal magnetic field but no twisted flux bundles. We investigate the changes in the geometry and connectivity of field lines, the magnetic energy and current-density content as well as the evolution of null points. Increasing the photospheric current density in the magnetic configuration does not dramatically change the energy-storage processes within the active region even if the magnetic topology is slightly modified. We conclude that for reasonable values of the photospheric current density (the force-free parameter α<0.25 Mmâ1), the magnetic configurations studied do change but not dramatically: i) the original null point stays nearly at the same location, ii) the field-line geometry and connectivity are slightly modified, iii) even if the free magnetic energy is significantly increased, the energy storage happens at the same location. This extensive study of different force-free models for a simple magnetic configuration shows that some topological elements of an observed active region, such as null points, can be reproduced with confidence only by considering the potential-field approximation.
