Characterizing Width Uniformity by Wave Propagation
This work describes a novel image analysis approach to characterize the
uniformity of objects in agglomerates by using the propagation of normal
wavefronts. The problem of width uniformity is discussed and its importance for
the characterization of composite structures normally found in physics and
biology highlighted. The methodology involves identifying each cluster (i.e.
connected component) of interest, which can correspond to objects or voids, and
estimating the respective medial axes by using a recently proposed wavefront
propagation approach, which is briefly reviewed. The distance values along such
axes are identified and their mean and standard deviation values obtained. As
illustrated with respect to synthetic and real objects (in vitro cultures of
neuronal cells), the combined use of these two features provide a powerful
description of the uniformity of the separation between the objects, presenting
potential for several applications in material sciences and biology.Comment: 14 pages, 23 figures, 1 table, 1 referenc
Traffic jam driving with NMV avoidance
In recent years, the development of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) - mainly based on lidar and cameras - has considerably improved the safety of driving in urban environments. These systems provide warning signals for the driver in the case that any unexpected traffic circumstance is detected. The next step is to develop systems capable not only of warning the driver but also of taking over control of the car to avoid a potential collision. In the present communication, a system capable of autonomously avoiding collisions in traffic jam situations is presented. First, a perception system was developed for urban situations - in which not only vehicles have to be considered, but also pedestrians and other non-motor-vehicles (NMV). It comprises a differential global positioning system (DGPS) and wireless communication for vehicle detection, and an ultrasound sensor for NMV detection. Then, the vehicles actuators - brake and throttle pedals - were modified to permit autonomous control. Finally, a fuzzy logic controller was implemented capable of analyzing the information provided by the perception system and of sending control commands to the vehicles actuators so as to avoid accidents. The feasibility of the integrated system was tested by mounting it in a commercial vehicle, with the results being encouraging. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Poor screening and nonadiabatic superconductivity in correlated systems
In this paper we investigate the role of the electronic correlation on the
hole doping dependence of electron-phonon and superconducting properties of
cuprates. We introduce a simple analytical expression for the one-particle
Green's function in the presence of electronic correlation and we evaluate the
reduction of the screening properties as the electronic correlation increases
by approaching half-filling. The poor screening properties play an important
role within the context of the nonadiabatic theory of superconductivity. We
show that a consistent inclusion of the reduced screening properties in the
nonadiabatic theory can account in a natural way for the - phase
diagram of cuprates. Experimental evidences are also discussed.Comment: 12 Pages, 6 Figures, Accepted on Physical Review
Intercalibration of the barrel electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS experiment at start-up
Calibration of the relative response of the individual channels of the barrel electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS detector was accomplished, before installation, with cosmic ray muons and test beams. One fourth of the calorimeter was exposed to a beam of high energy electrons and the relative calibration of the channels, the intercalibration, was found to be reproducible to a precision of about 0.3%. Additionally, data were collected with cosmic rays for the entire ECAL barrel during the commissioning phase. By comparing the intercalibration constants obtained with the electron beam data with those from the cosmic ray data, it is demonstrated that the latter provide an intercalibration precision of 1.5% over most of the barrel ECAL. The best intercalibration precision is expected to come from the analysis of events collected in situ during the LHC operation. Using data collected with both electrons and pion beams, several aspects of the intercalibration procedures based on electrons or neutral pions were investigated
Measurement of the Bottom-Strange Meson Mixing Phase in the Full CDF Data Set
We report a measurement of the bottom-strange meson mixing phase \beta_s
using the time evolution of B0_s -> J/\psi (->\mu+\mu-) \phi (-> K+ K-) decays
in which the quark-flavor content of the bottom-strange meson is identified at
production. This measurement uses the full data set of proton-antiproton
collisions at sqrt(s)= 1.96 TeV collected by the Collider Detector experiment
at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to 9.6 fb-1 of integrated luminosity.
We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of \beta_s and the
B0_s decay-width difference \Delta\Gamma_s, and measure \beta_s in [-\pi/2,
-1.51] U [-0.06, 0.30] U [1.26, \pi/2] at the 68% confidence level, in
agreement with the standard model expectation. Assuming the standard model
value of \beta_s, we also determine \Delta\Gamma_s = 0.068 +- 0.026 (stat) +-
0.009 (syst) ps-1 and the mean B0_s lifetime, \tau_s = 1.528 +- 0.019 (stat) +-
0.009 (syst) ps, which are consistent and competitive with determinations by
other experiments.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, Phys. Rev. Lett 109, 171802 (2012
