    The Roth Project - Music and Memory: A Community Agency Initiated Individualized Music Intervention for People with Dementia

    Introduction “The Roth Project - Music and Memory” is a music based intervention program, implemented by the Alzheimer’s Association of Central and Western Kansas, which provides a nonpharmacologicalmeans for addressing neuropsychiatric symptoms in individuals with dementia. Methods Participants were individuals with dementia who were enrolled in The Roth Project - Music and Memory. Post-intervention surveys were distributed to caregivers of participants which assessed caregiver satisfaction with the program as well as caregiver perception of the impact of individualized music on mood and behavioralsymptoms. Results Of returned surveys (n = 79), 99% of caregivers indicated they were satisfied or very satisfied with the program and 94% of caregivers perceived participants to like or very much like listening to the music. While a substantial number of participants required assistance with iPod use (95%), the majority of participants were observed to listen to the music with stable or increased frequency over time. Personalized music was observed to improve mood in 78% of cases, with the most frequent benefits being improved overall happiness, decreased anxiety, increased positive emotional expression, and decreased depression. Conclusions The Roth Project - Music and Memory was well received by caregivers and was perceived to benefit mood of individuals with dementia. These results provided ongoing support for individualized music-based interventions and demonstrated that such interventions, when implemented by community agencies, can be well received by those who use them

    Synthesis and characterization of Zr2Al3C4 thin films

    Zr2Al3C4 is an inherently nanolaminated carbide where layers of ZrC alternatewith layers of Al3C2. Characterization of bulk samples has shown it has improved damage tolerance and oxidation resistance compared to its binary counterpart ZrC. Though a potential candidate for coatings applied for use in harsh environments, thin films of Zr2Al3C4 have not been reported.We have synthesized epitaxial Zr2Al3C4 thin films by pulsed cathodic arc deposition from three elemental cathodes, and have studied the effect of incident atomic flux ratio, deposition temperature, and choice of substrate on material quality. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that Zr2Al3C4 of the highest structural quality was obtained for growth on 4 H-SiC(001) substrate at 800 ^deg;C. Also, suppression of competing phases could be achieved on á-Al2O3(001) at elevated substrate temperatures. Very similar growth behavior to that of the well-known Mn+1AXn phases - Al supersaturation, binary carbide intergrowth and high sensitivity to choice of substrate - indicates a strong connection between the two families ofmaterials, despite their differences in structure and in chemistry

    The Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT): Beam Profiles and First SZ Cluster Maps

    The Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) is currently observing the cosmic microwave background with arcminute resolution at 148 GHz, 218 GHz, and 277 GHz. In this paper, we present ACT's first results. Data have been analyzed using a maximum-likelihood map-making method which uses B-splines to model and remove the atmospheric signal. It has been used to make high-precision beam maps from which we determine the experiment's window functions. This beam information directly impacts all subsequent analyses of the data. We also used the method to map a sample of galaxy clusters via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect, and show five clusters previously detected with X-ray or SZ observations. We provide integrated Compton-y measurements for each cluster. Of particular interest is our detection of the z = 0.44 component of A3128 and our current non-detection of the low-redshift part, providing strong evidence that the further cluster is more massive as suggested by X-ray measurements. This is a compelling example of the redshift-independent mass selection of the SZ effect.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJS. See Marriage et al.     Flow complexity in open systems: interlacing complexity index based on mutual information

    Flow complexity is related to a number of phenomena in science and engineering and has been approached from the perspective of chaotic dynamical systems, ergodic processes or mixing of fluids, just to name a few. To the best of our knowledge, all existing methods to quantify flow complexity are only valid for infinite time evolution, for closed systems or for mixing of two substances. We introduce an index of flow complexity coined interlacing complexity index (ICI), valid for a single-phase flow in an open system with inlet and outlet regions, involving finite times. ICI is based on Shannon’s mutual information (MI), and inspired by an analogy between inlet–outlet open flow systems and communication systems in communication theory. The roles of transmitter, receiver and communication channel are played, respectively, by the inlet, the outlet and the flow transport between them. A perfectly laminar flow in a straight tube can be compared to an ideal communication channel where the transmitted and received messages are identical and hence the MI between input and output is maximal. For more complex flows, generated by more intricate conditions or geometries, the ability to discriminate the outlet position by knowing the inlet position is decreased, reducing the corresponding MI. The behaviour of the ICI has been tested with numerical experiments on diverse flows cases. The results indicate that the ICI provides a sensitive complexity measure with intuitive interpretation in a diversity of conditions and in agreement with other observations, such as Dean vortices and subjective visual assessments. As a crucial component of the ICI formulation, we also introduce the natural distribution of streamlines and the natural distribution of world-lines, with invariance properties with respect to the cross-section used to parameterize them, valid for any type of mass-preserving flow

    Age-related delay in information accrual for faces: Evidence from a parametric, single-trial EEG approach

    Background: In this study, we quantified age-related changes in the time-course of face processing by means of an innovative single-trial ERP approach. Unlike analyses used in previous studies, our approach does not rely on peak measurements and can provide a more sensitive measure of processing delays. Young and old adults (mean ages 22 and 70 years) performed a non-speeded discrimination task between two faces. The phase spectrum of these faces was manipulated parametrically to create pictures that ranged between pure noise (0% phase information) and the undistorted signal (100% phase information), with five intermediate steps. Results: Behavioural 75% correct thresholds were on average lower, and maximum accuracy was higher, in younger than older observers. ERPs from each subject were entered into a single-trial general linear regression model to identify variations in neural activity statistically associated with changes in image structure. The earliest age-related ERP differences occurred in the time window of the N170. Older observers had a significantly stronger N170 in response to noise, but this age difference decreased with increasing phase information. Overall, manipulating image phase information had a greater effect on ERPs from younger observers, which was quantified using a hierarchical modelling approach. Importantly, visual activity was modulated by the same stimulus parameters in younger and older subjects. The fit of the model, indexed by R2, was computed at multiple post-stimulus time points. The time-course of the R2 function showed a significantly slower processing in older observers starting around 120 ms after stimulus onset. This age-related delay increased over time to reach a maximum around 190 ms, at which latency younger observers had around 50 ms time lead over older observers. Conclusion: Using a component-free ERP analysis that provides a precise timing of the visual system sensitivity to image structure, the current study demonstrates that older observers accumulate face information more slowly than younger subjects. Additionally, the N170 appears to be less face-sensitive in older observers

    Sloan Digital Sky Survey Imaging of Low Galactic Latitude Fields: Technical Summary and Data Release

    The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) mosaic camera and telescope have obtained five-band optical-wavelength imaging near the Galactic plane outside of the nominal survey boundaries. These additional data were obtained during commissioning and subsequent testing of the SDSS observing system, and they provide unique wide-area imaging data in regions of high obscuration and star formation, including numerous young stellar objects, Herbig-Haro objects and young star clusters. Because these data are outside the Survey regions in the Galactic caps, they are not part of the standard SDSS data releases. This paper presents imaging data for 832 square degrees of sky (including repeats), in the star-forming regions of Orion, Taurus, and Cygnus. About 470 square degrees are now released to the public, with the remainder to follow at the time of SDSS Data Release 4.     Flora Dugog otoka dopunjena je s 55 taksona, pa s dosad poznatim taksonima broji sveukupno 629 taksona.During the floristic investigations on the island of Dugi, another 55 taxa have been discovered, new for its flora. On the basis of the data reported by Cufodontis (1929), Pevalek (1930), Horvatić (1961/62), Plavšić-Gojković (1966), Zi. Pavletić and Trinajstić (1983) and Trinajstić (1983) total of 574 taxa have been discovered, so that now the flora of the island of Dugi totals 629 taxa. For the taxa Cistus incanus subsp. creticus (= »C. villosus«, cf. Pevalek 1930: 133), Ulmus tortuosa subsp. dalmatica (= »U. campestris«, cf. Pevalek 1930: 125) and Brachypodium rupestre (= »B pinnatum«, cf. Cufodontis 1929: 227) a nomenclature revision has also been made

    The twilight of the Liberal Social Contract? On the Reception of Rawlsian Political Liberalism

    This chapter discusses the Rawlsian project of public reason, or public justification-based 'political' liberalism, and its reception. After a brief philosophical rather than philological reconstruction of the project, the chapter revolves around a distinction between idealist and realist responses to it. Focusing on political liberalism’s critical reception illuminates an overarching question: was Rawls’s revival of a contractualist approach to liberal legitimacy a fruitful move for liberalism and/or the social contract tradition? The last section contains a largely negative answer to that question. Nonetheless the chapter's conclusion shows that the research programme of political liberalism provided and continues to provide illuminating insights into the limitations of liberal contractualism, especially under conditions of persistent and radical diversity. The programme is, however, less receptive to challenges to do with the relative decline of the power of modern states
